I haven’t picked up a brush these past two weeks, so I wanted to do something this morning. Since I spent the whole day yesterday tracking down some partly finished 1/72 medieval polearm men, I naturally did something else. Last year I showed the start of my urban fantasy project. I’ve added a few miscellaneous figures (like last year’s Gencon Reaper preliminary speed paint entry), but I’ve been stalled for a while. Today was my day to unstall, a least a little bit. Leon, on the left, is a “Bones 91010 Houngan”. Lucia is a Hero Forge figure, of an as-yet-unnamed Fae species. (I used the bovine legs and the long fae ears.) I feel better now that I’ve gotten something done this month. (The mat, by the way, is from Frontline Games.)

So my fellow players wanted to get Hero Forge custom characters, and as the only painter in the group I did them up. The bard was in metal, the other two in resin. My goodness are the surfaces rough and the detail shallow! I was a bit embarrassed to hand them over, but they really liked them - it was super important that the figure was exactly the design they wanted. It was an interesting bit of calibration for me and how to enjoy the imperfect. I think the barbarian came out the best and my favorite bit to paint was the violin.

As if I didn’t have enough to do, I started playing around with the design systems on the Hero Forge web site. I finally ended up ordering a couple of figures to see how they looked when done. I’ve been reading the various Bordertown books lately, so ended up drifting into some urban fantasy territory here. It’s a little unfortunate that their system doesn’t have a playing pose, given the availability of the violin and bow. I do seem to accumulate musicians, though... The necromantic spell effect wasn’t my first choice, but it looked like the safest from a structural integrity view, so I went with it. Both of these were done in the higher grade plastic, and I was pleased to see that the layer lines were pretty much invisible after painting.

So I painted this one for a friend to use as his goliath fighter in our dnd campaign. It was a quick and easy paint, since he asked me to keep it simple. I like how it turned out considering the printing quallity Also, the blade of his original sword broke of, so I replaced it with a warhammer empire greatsword blade

So one of my players bought a hero forge 3d model and then printed it. I've based it, primed it and now I'm painting it in the color combination he requested. I have just finished the base layer (the goggles will be gold with green glass) Hope he's happy when it's finished :D

One of my players had this character made through Hero Forge. I painted her to his specifications. This is Poro Gemfixer, a kobold sorceress. It has been raining like mad the past few days so I haven't been able to Dulcote her so she is very shiny. Also, the fingerprint on her base is not mine. It is actually in the plastic. Weird!

Sometimes, I feel really out of place posting a mini I painted as some of you guys are scary good mini painters, but I am just so darn happy with this mini and had such a blast painting her I wanted to share! And you can't improve if you don't try! Right? So introducing Pucket, the Halfling Paladin of Lliira. Aside from the gnome from LTPK this is my first Hero type mini. She's my character for my next campaign and I ordered her on HeroForge. There just aren't enough dancing halflings out there. I tried a lot of new techniques I've been reading about and am pretty pleased with the results. Her eyes look sort of like eyes! The bottle looks vaguely like there is something inside of it! I did totally chicken out on the armor, I was going to try to paint the decorative bits a different color but just didn't trust my hand/eye coordination enough. Now I just have to figure out a background reason for her to have purple hair and a shiny blue scabbard that my DM will actually buy. Also, can someone tell me how to do that thing where you drop photos under a banner you have to click to expand?

Here we have a Hero Forge custom 3d printed figure, designed by yours truly. I've read some other peoples reviews, kinda bashing them. After this, my first experience with HF, I'd have to disagree. Yes, there was some "stepping", really not much though. I sanded it back on the larger areas like the cloak. All in all the time I put into prepping this dude was less time than I normally put into any other fig. The fact that I will not find any stray mold lines as I continue to paint him is very comforting. After priming and base coating I did a bit of wash last night, nothing out of the ordinary happened. In these pics you may notice the stepping at the end of the flail. I think its just primer/sanding, as this was the way other parts looked after prime, before paint. The other parts look just fine after base paint. I didn't spend much attention on the ball, if it ends a bit rippled and it's the only part that is, I think it will look like part of the weapons design.

Hero Forge: Archetypes 1 & 2 - Paladin & Rogue - Casting Type: Strong Plastic - table quality. I was commissioned to paint these miniature for a D&D 5e game. They are a Dragonborn Paladin and a Gnome Rogue. I am going to tag this thread with another thread that has a WIP of another HF miniatures. My over all review of this thus far is not great. I don't want to bash another company but I am not impressed so far. The miniature absorbs the paint. No joke It takes it into the miniature. The following pictures take about 4 rounds of diluted paint to achieve the color. I saw the video SamuraiJack posted about coating them. But as this is my first try and I didn't pay for them I was not going to attempt them. The likelihood is I may not get the chance as I am unwilling to purchase a "Strong Plastic" Hero Forge miniature to test it out. First coat of Reaper Brown Wash (3:1) to see the details better. It didn't help much; the cast of these didn't have the details show very well at all. Next was a dry brush: From dark grey to a lighter gray. Duel attempt: Bring out detail / add shadowing. It took about 4 layers of diluted paint. I standardly use a 3:1 ratio as I am prone to glazing/washing. Honed Steel, White Leather (which is whiter than the link, fyi), Denim Blue (also lighter than the picture) Forest Green, Intense Brown, I'm also attempting to paint faster too, Trying to get my production time down for table table quality.
