I've got a bunch of amphibious friends to share with you all today! While in search of some suitable tribal-inspired Bullywug for my ongoing nautical campaign project, I stumbled upon these Croak Raiders from Privateer Press's Hordes. these metal frogs perfectly balanced the jungle, tribal tree-frog look I wanted with the bulbous look of Bullywugs as opposed to the more nimble Grung who are often stylized as Poison Dart Frogs. I absolutely fell in love with these frogs and their giant necks. I was gifted a set during the holidays and quickly ordered Underchief Mire to stand in as the wannabe King of my Bullywug society. I used these frogs as a chance to get used to my airbrush and try out some other speed painting methods, but really struggled with the slog of painting of painting so many similar things.Especially picking out each knot on the ridiculous amount of rope these guys wear. You can read a bit about my painting process, especially on my first test model, on this WIP thread HERE. For now, let's take a closer look at the finished frogs: Bullywug Throwers First up are these pot-throwing Bullywug. The center one with the blue feathers was my test model. Spent some time working out different techniques and color choices on him. Ended up changing a few things to help the leather loin cloth stand out from the rope, but I largely got it right the first time. In the close ups below you can see a better view of the quiver which became a bane of my existence during this project. All of the frogs, except for the chief, came with these matching quivers. I could have left them unattached, but they felt incomplete without them and so I suffered through the arduous task of picking out all of the details on these ten times. More Photos: Bullywug Spearmen Next up are these warty frogs equipped with spear-launchers (or atlatl for you weapon-experts). I like that the quivers that these guys wear contain both arrows and pots, making it seem as if all of the frogs have access to either method of fighting. I particularly enjoyed the turtle shells on these guys, but getting paint into the tight gap between their right arms was hard. More Photos: Bullywug Pyros These roguish frog-men have stepped it up by igniting their spears. I had a fun time keeping their faces in shadow by selectively highlighting them. I also got to play around a bit with OSL. If I had planned ahead better, I may have tried to paint these up as if they were partially in darkness for a more dramatic OSL look, but I prepped them along with the others for my standard daylight paintjob. I did try to capture a bit of a warmer glow near the flames and along the right sides of the frogs. I'm happy enough with it even if it's not super stylized or dramatic. More Photos: Bullywug Torch-Bearer This angry croaker came as the unit leader in the Croak Raiders box. I was actually missing him originally, but Privateer Press quickly corrected the issue. Had a bit of fun painting up his mouth and giving him some perfect little teeth ala' the Bullywug from NADDPOD. He also got a bit of a glow around the torch. More Photos: Bullywug King This guy was just too much fun not to pick up. Grumpy and serious. I imagine the Bullywug adopted a mock-feudal society after briefly encountering human explorers. They don't quite understand what it entails besides showering a king with riches in order to be stronger than your enemies. I really like how this guy turned out. Especially the gem on his crown and the texture on his stone blade. More Photos: I am normally not one to copy box art, but I really loved the look of these guys on the official art. I borrowed heavily from those examples, but once I had started working on them, I allowed myself to get more creative. I really like how the speckling on their bodies turned out, and am pleased that the Red, Yellow, and Blue quivers blend in well enough while still providing an easy visual distinction between individual units. These were really fun models and I'm very proud of the final results even if it took me a month longer to finish them than I had anticipated. What do you think?

Well , I am done with this blue guy , had a couple issue with assembly and such but should look good on a table ..hopefully :D

Long time I did not open a little wip and I decided to get onto one of the privateer press figure I had on my shelf. Already did a preshade pass using some of their paint and also a thin glaze with liquitex ink just to have a more saturated blue tint.

Sure, I definitely feel like I already have enough WIP threads going, but at the same time hubby did ask me to work on this one for him, so why not. For some reason I was rather excited he asked me to paint her for him (he's painting the rest of his Circle Orboros Battlegroup Box (PIP 72094))... I blame her cape. It's a rather interesting looking one, filled with all sorts of details. Staff is quite nice too ^So here is where things start. Yup, it isn't the prettiest of jobs for gluing, especially where that staff meets the shoulder. It just wouldn't stick when I put it together, and I think at the time I didn't have my pinning stuff yet. Could be wrong, but for now that's the story I'm sticking with! ^While it was tempting to try and sculpt something, given she's already glued down, I figured I'd use a mix I had made up ages ago of various grades of what I think was Woodland Scenics ballast because it's quick, easy, convenient, and the grains are all sized slightly differently.... And that add a bit more later on, be it rocks and/or various bushes or whatever. Right off the bat I'm going to say this: I so didn't get all of the seams, and I'm more or less okay with such. Sadly, a lot of them are in really odd places (who puts a seam in the middle of several cloak folds?) ^How things look now. Ahhh, Grey Liner, you're ever so useful it seems. It's pretty much become my go-to for priming, and I love how the colours seem to be somewhat different as they set along the various parts of the mini. I do understand that having fully assembled her things will be difficult, but it was originally a mini hubby was going to paint, and he asked she be assembled... So I'm taking it as a challenge to undertake now, yes, let's go with that one! Going to be letting the liner dry and fully set/cure/whateverit'scalled and am hoping to spend a bit of time every night on her this week!

My FLGS is doing a Halloween themed painting contest. As your entry needs to be purchased in store I decided to go with a Hordes miniature I had been eyeing for awhile, Lady Karianna Rose, Grymkin Solo. I put her on a Secret Weapon base and added a couple of pumpkins, now on to primer.

A fitting adversary for the Benthic Walker and my aquanauts, this burly fishy brute packs a massive steampunky harpoon cannon and a cape made of human leather. (How aquatic species do their leather-tanning, I don't know, but it seems to work for this guy.) He's also adorned with fishhooks, which must be a bold countercultural statement among fishmen. Like a necklace of bullets and syringes for a human, I guess. Big fella, he came with a Large base but could pass for a very burly Medium creature in my opinion. This brute is not some lungbreather hybrid from Innsmouth; this is 100% Deep One stuff. Oh yes, also the rotten hands and bones on the gruesome cape. Trophies of the Ones that Got Away, perhaps?

Here are the minis that I painted up for my Widower's Wood set. I've always loved Gatormen, and these minis were all loads of fun. One thing to note is that Widower's Wood makes use of the different colored plastic used for the minis. If you paint them up, you need to have a way to tell them apart. I've seen people paint the bases in bright colors, or paint the whole minis in red or blue, but I prefer a more subtle approach. There are marks on the bases that I painted in red or blue, and I found places on the minis to express these colors as well (feathers, or the fade on the back fins and such). Well, here they are:

My latest completion. Although Gunnbjorn is a warlock for the Hordes table top game, I'm actually going to be using him in my current Pathfinder game as a replacement for the upcoming big bad. As always any C&C are most welcome, especially tips for improvement. I also apologize for the photo quality, still trying to figure things out with the new camera phone -- and I wasn't particularly technologically inclined to begin with. Also I know I should have done more with his assorted bags, but frankly, was starting to get a bit "done" with him. Perhaps I will go back later and add to them. Thanks for looking!

Finally got around to finishing up Ragnor Skysplitter by Privateer Press. Available in the Trollblood Starter Box for Hordes. Not my best work, but just reached the point where I needed to move on, and there are some parts that I really like. As always, any C&C would be most welcome! Cheers, Gargs

Well, I'm not actually painting anything at work today...because I'm not going to work today. Suffice to say, we tried a new Chinese restaurant the other day, and it has not gone well. BUT! I posted a teaser in my last Lunch Sessions thread, and now I can go ahead and start this one. Prep work is done, so when I do get back into the office I can actually start laying paint. Here's what's going on this time around: Privateer Press has just started their Minicrate program, a subscription-based monthly "crate" of, well, miniatures. They are all special edition minis available only through the crate subscription. When I saw the first mini they planned to release, I almost got a subscription before realizing I probably wouldn't care overmuch about most of the minis involved past the first...we'll see if I regret that decision later, but the good news is: @chaosscorpion did subscribe, and was willing to work out a trade for the Swamp Siren in exchange for a warlock for his fledgling Trollbloods army. (if you care to see the mini in question, @Ghool just posted a really lovely painted version) Chaosscorpion was good enough to send the Swamp Siren over already, so I have her waiting for the day I paint her up...I have plans to do a resin-water base for her eventually. And I have procured and prepped Borka Kegslayer: I do have one specific instruction for this fella: Tartan! Chaosscorpion also provided a specific family tartan for me to replicate: Now, I've done a good bit of freehand, and a fair number of stripes, but never any actual plaid. So I decided I'd get some practice in first, which is where this preview pic comes in: This is the backside of one of the new Wizkids Pathfinder unpainted line, from the "Merchants" set. By way of a quick review, these are cheap and nicely detailed. They are pre-prepped and pre-primed, and I was impressed with both the lack of mold lines (still a few, but nothing egregious. For NPCs or townsfolk I'm not too worried) and the complete coverage of the primer. I was surprised to find the primer was every bit as hydrophobic as bare Bonesium, but eventually I got a basecoat down. I'm planning to paint her dress in plaid, using the Aitken tartan: I chose this tartan because it has roughly the same pattern as Chaosscorpion's, although in different colors. It's likely I'm overthinking the process, but I want to be as accurate as I can when I get to the plaid on Borka. So that's where I am at this point. I likely won't do any further painting until Wednesday (there's an office Halloween thing tomorrow), but I've got a bit of a start!

As seen in my Lunch Sessions WiP thread, here's the finished product of Borka Kegslayer, the stumbling-drunk warlock for Privateer Press' Trollbloods faction. I painted this guy up as part of a trade with @chaosscorpion , so the mini will be on his way across the state in the near future, unless CS sees something terribly terribly off. Basing is left to Chaosscorpion to better match his army. The plaid is a specific tartan, I'm pretty pleased with it. I'm pleased that this mini pushed me into doing plaid, which I'd never done before. Borka also comes with a kegbearing Pyg. The kegstamp is, like the debossed pattern on the back of Borka's jacket, the symbol of the Trollbloods faction. I also enjoy the ridiculously drunken whelp sitting on top of the barrel. Chaosscorpion, let me know if there's anything that needs to change before I put them in the mail!

So I've decided to get back to painting and since trying Hordes I thought painting some Trollblood units would help. You may have seen Sanael's Lunchtime Painting Session 3. We worked a trade and he is painting my first Trollblood Warlock. So I decided to start with a Heavy Warbeast from the Privateer Press Hordes game, Trollblood Faction. At this point I have cleaned up mold lines and am considering the painting process. I think I will work on individual pieces and assembly after I'm say 75% on the paint job. The joints will require a fair amount of work at first glance. Please be critical of the work. I want to get better. I am currently a ReaperCon Bronze level painter looking to get Silver level work.

One for my Patrons that is the first model from PP's Minicrate subscription model service. This one was a fun paint, and a pretty nice model. We'll see if they can maintain it!

I held out for almost 5 days before I could no longer resist starting something from my Grymkin starter set. Wasn't sure what I wanted to paint, but a bit of dice rolling randomly selected the Skin and Moans Warbeast:- The Internet has lied to me though. According to an un-boxing video I watched, I should've been able to assemble the whole starter set in about 3 hours, but it took me 2 hours to do just this one guy.

So, because I have a bit of Hobby ADD as I like to call it, and because I really wasn't in a painting mood yesterday but was in a hobby mood (go figure) I decided to start on my Hordes Two Player Battle Box. I decided in addition to getting started on this, and documenting my misadventures as a newbie hobbiest/hobbier? I would also conduct a bit of a product review along with it. I figure that this box is intended, at least in part, for new players, and as such, may also include those new to the hobby. So I'll document start to finish (fair warning, it will be a long time before I get it fully complete) while also providing commentary on the quality, etc. So, for starters, this is a compliment to the Warmachine game (could also be called the second side of the same coin). The two games are fully compatible. The box itself comes with a starting army for the Trollblood and Skorne factions (hence Two Player). From a pricing standpoint, the value of the box in terms of content is somewhat dependent on whether you are just looking to paint the models, or if you are also looking to get into playing the game. The box retails for about $90 but you can likely find it cheaper if you look around a bit (I myself got it for about 33% off). As for the contents, you'll get 28 minis (if my math/memory serves) divided evenly between the two factions. Additionally, you get various tokens and other bits you can use for playing the game but which are not related to the actual painting side of things. Fair warning though, those 28 models include 10 models in each faction that are part of the same unit and thus, will be fairly similar. If you were to buy the models separately though (or rather as they can currently be purchased outside the two player box) you'd pay about $150 retail, so from that standpoint, its a great deal. Even better is if you have a friend that is looking to get into it as well and you can split the box with them. I'm a masochist though and actually bought the box for the sake of having some of each faction and for the experience/joy/pain of assembling and painting them. Anyway, removing the non-model related items from the box leaves you with this: Huh, how bad could that be right? Well, I decided to start with the three troll warbeasts which are contained together in one of the plastic bags shown, and when opened, leave you with this: I seem to remember counting 24 pieces for the three beasts though I only see 22 here. Its possible there's a couple small pieces hiding, or that I just miscounted (no worries though, I know I'm not missing any pieces). As I prepped these for assembly, I ran into my first complaint. The mold lines on these pieces are quite plentiful, rather noticeable, and often times poorly placed (like right down the center of the face). Fortunately I am not a perfectionist and am willing to say "good enough" but the plastic mold lines do come up easily enough with a hobby knife provided you can get the knife in there. I got what I could, but didn't go nuts on it. We'll see how bad it looks when they get primed. As for assembly, these are actually pretty easy to assemble so far. The torso pieces can fit into any of the leg pieces and although the three beasts all carry a different armament, its easy to match the arms up with the torsos because of the shape of the pegs. The downside to this is that there isn't a lot of room for mixing and matching the pieces between the three. You could probably work the shield onto any of the three if you really wanted, and there's a pauldron that you could likely do the same with, but that's about it. That said though, assembly was pretty easy which is good for a product targeting new players. So here are the three beasts mostly assembled. The remaining pieces will be added later as I paint so as to allow better access to all parts of the models. From left to right are the Troll Bouncer, Troll Impaler, and Troll Axer who I shall call Dalton, Vlad, and Lizzie respectively. Dalton is currently a bit forward leaning and needs his shield in order to stand still for the picture. Or maybe he's just drunk, not sure. Anyway, next step will be priming and then they will probably sit for a few days while I a) work on some other models, b) let the primer cure (I use brush on) and c) go out of town. As always feel free to add in any questions and C&C (though not much to C&C yet I realize). :P

A little distraction that I've been working on for a while. It actually sat on the shelf primed and ready for quote a while before I decided to tackle it in full. I'm also trying out a new photo background. Seems to be helping. Comments and Critiques welcome.

I really love making minis for our RPG group- and here is a party for one of our campaigns. The group consisted of three trollkin and a farrow (who might have been a trollkin in a previous life- or maybe the next one). Only the first one has no conversion elements. The one with the fell blades was a Fell Caller with Doomreaver levels. Overall, I feel that this was one of our poorer intelligence parties- it was kind of a surprise that they ever got much done.

Teraph from privateer press. I'm very sad right now. I should have 2 minis to post, but the paint crackled up in some areas when I spray sealed the other. It even happened a little bit on one of this guys legs. I've sealed a lot of minis so far and have never seen that happen. I'm going to have to strip the other one and start over :( Then a leg came off this guy while basing him. Not sure what happened to the glue and putty. Then I look down and paint flaked off in a ring all the way around one of his ankles??? I may have over did it with the snow too. I felt like a Big Fail after painting, but the next day I looked at him and realized I cleaned it up pretty good and was a bit more happy about the mini.

Thagrosh, Prophet of Everblight. The very first Legion of Everblight model I have ever painted. All thanks to my Patrons for choosing it. Now, one of them gets to win it. Rest assured, there are videos coming out that will feature this big fella, covering both his skin, and horns. However, YouTubers will have to wait until January 9 for the public release of the first video. You can watch them if you're a Patron before the end of the month. He was a really fun model to paint. He's one of those models that has just the right amount of detail. Enough bits and bobs to make it fun, and not tedious. I think I sunk about 20 hours into this one, although it didn't seem like it at all. He was actually finished quicker than it felt. And that's probably because I was really enjoying myself. I stuck pretty closely to the studio scheme here as well. Onto the pics!

Picked up some Hordes minis cheap and thought this guy would make a fun monster for my players. Came out a bit glossier than I intended. Put on some matte sealer on after the gloss, but I think I oversealed it. The white markings are supposed to be tendons and ligaments. A friend pointed out that it looked like it had outgrown its shell, so I was trying to make it look like raw, exposed muscle. The bones are done with a simple bone color, followed by a wash, then highlighted and finally given an edge highlight. It doesn't show up so well here, but there's a fair amount of Blood For the Blood God slathered around on the red bits. The basing was done with oxid paste, painted and highlighted, and done up with a little static grass and some swamp tufts. Not sure what stats I'll give him, but it should be a fun fight.

Preparing for the Isle of Dread, I painted up a selection of Lizard Guys! A bunch are from Reaper, there's some Warhammer Lizardmen, and even Wrong-Eye from Hordes. There's no group shot for these, as there's a NSFW Bones Medusa in that one who wasn't as blocked by a Saurus as I thought she was when I was snapping away on the phone.

One last shot at these WIP things. I've got a themed WIP here: Dave's Thornfall Alliance. I'm giving them a wasteland theme, and right now, I've got: Lord Carver, BMMD, Esq., III Rorsh & Brine Razor Boars (x2) Slaughterhousers (Leader & 5 Grunts) Farrow Brigands (Leader & 9 Grunts) Farrow Brigand Warlord Meat Thresher War Hog Maximus ...so this is going to be a fairly long WIP, which you are joining already in progress. Some of these guys are already based: Carver, Rorsh & Brine, and the Razor Boars 2 Random Farrow (from Iron Kingdoms Unleashed), and the Slaughterhousers I started working on Lord Carver, Bringer of Much Massive Destruction, Esquire, the Third (known as Immortan Carver from here on) first (after finishing my Secret Sophie project). Immortan Carver's Pretty Much Everybody's Basecoat: Cloak/Loincloth - Sample Rusty Red Fur/Flesh - Sample Muddy Brown Shoulder Fur - P3 Cryx Bane Highlight Steel - Vallejo Oily Steel Bronze - GW Tin Bitz (Warplock Bronze) Leather - Reaper 09110 Oiled Leather Tusks - GW Kommando Khaki (Karak Stone) At the point in the above photos, his cloak had been highlighted with Reaper 09111 Burnt Orange, and his metallics had been washed with P3 Armor Wash.
