Yup another project, as if I didn't have enough on my hands. This will take a while, but I will start again. A few decades ago ( before I roamed this Forum) I created a Barbarian Army with Animal allies. I sold it and all I have left are these tiny pics that show only part of it. Also, this was decades ago so I didn't paint as well as I do today ( or at least I think so) Here are the old pics as appetizers, I will soon start the new army. Enjoy!

At wargames fair on Saturday came across these 4 puppies in a terrible state. Squashed together on one piece of double-sided tape, one completely unpainted the other three had patchy grey, white and black coats. They all seemed to be coming apart at the seams and I'm 90% sure they came from a hoarded home 😢We managed to scrape up the adoption fees get them home and treat the worst of their wounds... We thought they were going to turn out to be Winter Wolves but somewhere along the way they became Ice Wolves and went all glittery - don't know where that idea came from 😁....Now have to think up names for them...

It was a very busy summer (and into the fall), so I didn't get a lot of painting done. But here are the Bones Black Hell Hounds (#44100). Or the Hell's Frozen Over Hounds as I've painted them. Here is the Reaper Dungeon Dweller Unicorn (#07047). He was a test run of Turbo Dork's Mother Lode paint. It has a mother of pearl sheen in person, but it is very hard to capture in a picture. And the Bones Classic Silverhorn Unicorn, #77029. He was an experiment with Reaper Black Pearl paint. And finally, Ian the Ivy Crown Mage. Warlord #14544.

The Medium I personally find the blended fibers medium by Liquitex to be a highly versatile medium. It can be added to any ground mixture to add the appearance of natural roots and similar debris. In this tutorial I will be looking at how to make an ice base using it. It is important to remember that in most cases the ice is hardly crystal clear and instead it generally appears cloudy white. The blended fibbers have a slight translucency which allows for the illusion of depth, while each fiber acts like a crack in the ice. The Ice Step 1: Base colour Use a dark base. Then tint it with the colour you want. In this case I used Cerulean Blue. This step can be skipped if you are going to be tinting the medium instead (thought a darker base colour is still advised) Step 2: Apply Fiber Medium Slather on a large dollop of medium. You can add some colour to tint it, but the colour will change significantly as it dries so be carful to not overpower it (you don't even need to mix it well as streaking colours may be desired). Transparent colours work better for tinting if you still want to retain the depth. In this case I did not tint it. Step 3: Smooth the Medium I did this by wetting a pallet knife and running it over the surface, followed by cleaning up the edges. The Fiber medium is extremely easy to smooth with a wet pallet knife. The thickness decides how much translucency the final product has. Step 4: Let it Dry In this case I liked how it looked so I decided not to dry brush it with white. Drybrushing with white would make it look more frosty. This took a couple hours for me, mostly due to the thickness I chose. You can see how the blue is showing in the photo, that is the undercoat peaking through. The Snow Step 1: Snow Mix some medium with Titanium white. This will make a nice snow texture Step 2: Applying Snow Apply the snow and feather it out with a brush, the feathering out makes it look more realistic. If you don't want peaks use water to smooth the snow (unless you want peaks to represent sticks in the snow.) Step 3: Let it Dry The base is now finished. The Miniature Put a miniature on it. Thats what a base is for. Unless you want to use it as a trap in DnD or some terrain.

So I've painted up a couple of sample pieces of my 4bot tiles and to try out an ice recipe. I thought I'd get some feedback. It seems a bit too sea glass for me. Phtalo green (yellow ink) +medium, then drybrush of teal, turquoise, pale blue, and adding white. Also included a pic of previous recipe using turquoise ink and pale blue, then white drybrush. And materials Thoughts?

Here's my final batch of new painted figures. Bones Giant Centipedes. A staple encounter for low-level adventurers. Still inspired by Reign of Winter. Sadly, Mr. Red got into the snow of Mr. Blue's base! Enjoy. C&C Welcome.

Figured I'd drop a few more unprofessional pics of the few things I've done in the last year. I painted this wizard for my son to use in a potential game of Frosthaven that we still haven't been able to play. At any rate, I like how he turned out and my son likes his owl. I really need to get my light tent set up as the simple desk light doesn't do anything for these mins.... LOL! -K

Frulla Krung The Frost Giantess Frulla Krung was chosen as the next project by popular vote on the forums. The miniature was sculpted by Sandra Garrity and the base was composed of a piece of slate, sand, ballast, and bark. You can see for yourself in the WIP post. The miniature is depicted as a frost giant so I gave her blue skin and instead of a classic blond look as most seem to get, I decided to keep hers dark blue. For the eyes I went with a bright grey iris to make them creepy, intense and stand out. She's clothed in the latest fashion of yellow fur trimming a classic leather bikini top and loincloth bottom. Her "Ugg" boots are wrapped with leather thongs and she likes a fur bracer. She's sporting a tribal necklace of teeth but with a pendant to match the bracelet on her arm. Her other accessory? The family battleaxe. A classic double headed axe with some amazing filigree work on the flat of the head. She'll claim a few heads with it next go around with the humans below. Her ancestral home is high within the mountains and thus covered in snow, ice and hoarfrost. Here she is ... Frulla Krung, the Frost Giantess! Enjoy. Check her out in the Inspiration Gallery. Painted up this Mountain Troll up over the weekend. I decided to go with an Ice Troll look, and I think it turned out pretty nice. I normally paint my main colors and then use a heavy wash to bring out the details, but this time I tried something different for his skin. I used a light gray base coat over all of the skin areas, then dry brushed two layers of blue on the back/arms, and some bone color on the stomach and chest. I really like how it turned out, but it made touch ups from the armor pretty tricky. I also noticed some pretty bad mold lines after I took the pictures, so I need to be more careful before I start painting to those up. Overall, I really enjoyed painting this fig and look forward to unleashing him on a party of adventurers! Critiques and advice are always welcome! Thanks in advance!

Finished Spellweaver from Gloomhaven for a comission. First attempt at OSL, and first bona fide 28mm eye job. C&C welcomed.

Here are some classic vermin for your viewing pleasure. Still going along with the Reign of Winter theme, I wanted one wintry option. The red one shading/blending got really washed out in the picture. The recesses are splattered crimson, so much darker than this looks. Boy, are these eyes tiny! C&C Welcome.

I picked up the clear Kyphrixis from Bones 3 with the full intent to make it a White Dragon while leaving the wing membranes translucent,which is what I did. I did wind up deciding to do a wash on the membranes, but otherwise, really love the effect.

Long time lurker, second time poster, first time upload. Here is the Frost Giant Queen from the Reaper Bones 3 Kickstarter for your consideration. I was unable to participate in the Bones 3 Kickstarter as I came upon these Bones figures late in the game. However, the participants who were able placed their unwanted miniatures up on eBay, so I took advantage of opportunity when presented. I focused on Color Theory and Texture on this piece as she provided a very large palette to paint upon. These Giants provided me practice in sketching too, which makes the entire line appealing to me. Side note: Gratitude to those who did place these minis up on eBay without jacking up the prices. I was able to purchase the both Frost Giant Royalty around cost of what Reaper will sell them at Retail. This certainly displays an ethos in the Reaper community that makes this community stand out among others. Further, having lurked for awhile: the community here is quite kind and helpful. This is a good community of miniature painters. I like the Bones miniature range. The detail on this miniature was very close to what I expect from the metal range, and I will purchase more of the Bones range in the future. I am looking forward to the resculpt of Vanya, the Fire Giant Princess, and her new size to match the Fire Giants in D&D. The attire of this miniature is akin to the Viking attire of old, and I found my SCA ventures to assist me in painting this Viking Apron and embellishments. The sculptor did an outstanding job and I look forward to more of their work. The FAQs were an asset that made my first foray into Bones an easier one. I had difficulty with flash lines until I picked up some diamond files, which handled them quite well without marring detail like my serrated files. The bent pieces were fixed with some boiling water and cold water quite easily. The pieces fit together like a glove, though I admit I still pinned them. (My OCD was tingling.) I did use Krylon as Primer, and the tackiness disappeared after the first coat of paint. She was sealed only with Krylon Dull Cote and exhibits no tackiness. She has been handled and there is no rubbing off of paint. I like how her base was round, though I am ignorant of what would be an appropriate Reaper base to place this inside of. (I currently have the King on a GW Dreadnought base, and I do not like it. If anyone reads this and has a recommendation, I surely would appreciate it.) This Bones line of miniatures has proven to me to be a Good Idea and one I will support. I am already purchasing more of the Bones 2 line for my D&D and Oldhammer alternatives, and I admit excitement at the new of Bones 4. Based on the quality of these miniatures: you will have an additional participant. Please keep up the outstanding quality and amazing work. I hope you enjoy my efforts. Hey everyone, it has been a long time since I posted any WIPs or finished paint jobs. I sort of moved out of my house to move in with my girlfriend and in doing that and moving between places I didn't get around to doing much painting. When I was packing some of my things I found an old box full of old hobby stuff. Inside I found lots of old lord of the rings material and some finished and unfortunately broken miniatures. Among them I found the Balrog, which looked pretty banged up, head was off, one of his wings had broken off too.. When I painted those minis roughly 17 years ago I was very fresh in painting metal minis and never even heard of pinning. First I thought I would fix him and retouch the damaged spots, but then I thought it would be cool to re do the whole thing and this time not paint him up like the Balrog but like a sort of Ice variant of the fire beast. Cleaning was pretty easy with some alcohol. I fixed him up and decided to extend the flames on his back with some greenstuff. This was about 2 months ago. Since I do not really have a fixed hobby space yet and been really busy with lots of other stuff I only started painting again last week. Progress up till now Any C&C is as always much appreciated

As I head into the final few figures left of my Bones 1 Kickstarter blog painting challenge, this past weekend I finished up Boerogg Blackrime, Frost Giant Jarl. (Though in the Kickstarter he was labeled as the Ice Giant King). Just 4 more figures to paint from my entire Bones 1 purchase. I owe an extra-special thanks to all the Reaper Forumites who helped win this beastie and allowed me to paint her! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I loved this project. I wanted to paint this resin master sculpt all in blue with an ice and snow theme. Also, I wanted to create what seems like the perfect camouflage for an icy dragon hunting after dark. So the dragon from below is blue-black like the night sky, invisible when she soars overhead, while she is icy and pale on her back to hide in the snow by day. But I couldn't resist carrying the aurora pattern on to the back of the wings. I tried to match it up as carefully as I could to seem like a translucent wing. I have a fairly (hah!) extensive WIP encompassing several different threads: May-Aug '15 Sept-Dec '15 most recent She took...sigh... FOREVER. But she's worth it. She's also kind of hard to photo. I had to use the icky white background, but it at least worked. C&C always welcome! Let me know if I can fix anything in terms of the snow. I'm still exploring the whole icy creating aspect of mini painting...

Okay all! This is the latest experiment as I needed some time off from Space Wolves and I wanted to play around with some ice effects. I stumbled across this old tutorial by Monkey Sloth on making ice, so I figured I'd see what I could do with them as I've been messing around with Space Wolves and all of their frozen misery. I picked up this mini at ReaperCon 2015 and figured I'd try her out as it'd been quite a while since I've painted something with this much cloth on it. I have to say that I spent way more time on this figure than I would have liked, but at least it was a great exercise in cloth, frost, and all things that have helped knock more brush rust off my brushes! You'll have to forgive the blurriness of the pics as I'm still learning to use the camera on this iPhone 6s. I'm used to my old Galaxy S5 camera that took awesome pics so... yeah. I'm learning. Anyhoo, copious pics.... Some things I liked about this project. Others, not so much. A few didn't even come through in the photograph: 1. I definitely liked the amount of PRACTICE I received as I'm really just starting to take off in painting after several months of no painting whatsoever. Hopefully the next project will reflect this. 2. I liked the tutorial on the ice. It made some lovely ice, in spite of my cat taking out one of the cups of ice crystals before they were ready. 3. I did NOT like how the frozen effect on the staff came out. You can't really tell in these pics but the staff is coated in Secret Weapons Snow Effects, giving it quite the bedazzled appearance in person. This did not translate to the photographs most likely due to the close proximity of the lights, AND the fact that I should have shaded the staff BEFORE coating it... I digress... Anyway... 4. Your girl got a big dress! It's hard to appreciate how much space she takes up on that checker. In fact, this piece was basically finished until I found out that she was doing the splits on the edge of the checker. The ice effects, like water effects, shrunk considerably leaving a bowl like depression, causing her to not sit flush with the bottom at all! I had to fill in the void with sand, then shade, then I reapplied a thin layer of ice effects... which then soaked into the sand and ripped half of it up. It was then treated to a drenching in thin super glue (some of which somehow got into the corner of my mouth...) then sealed and dullcoated until most shine from the glue was relieved. At the end, she still didn't sit level, which is why she has 2 extra shards of ice shoved under her dress as you can see in the pics. It was either that or see her rear pin, and she had no desire to show that off. 5. I liked the ink effects on the checker. Look great in person! Basically, she was a difficult lady to mount on an ice themed base of my custom design. BUT, she's there and done enough! LOL! Here's a panoramic view: Thanks for looking! Hey all! Just figured I'd post the current mini that I'm working on: Reaper's 60149: Winter Witch. I think I picked her up at last year's ReaperCon, and she's been sitting around waiting to be painted. I figured it'd be a good opportunity to get some practice in as well as experiment with ice bases for all of those Space Wolves I'm supposed to be painting. Anyways, enjoy! -K

Where to begin... I bought an airbrush to paint this guy, I base coated the base but when I went to base coat the monster the air gun was clogged. I cleaned it, still didn't work. I took it apart and cleaned it, still didn't work. It will only spray water and occasionally a glob of paint. I thinned my paints, I cleaned the thing a million times. Still doesn't work!. So I have up for a while. Finally I decided to just paint it by hand. What a paint THAT was! Just trying to hold this guy constantly takes paint off I already put on. GRRRR. Anyway, I check the internet to see how other people painted this guy, pretty impressive stuff out there. I didn't see any snow tarrasques so that's what I went for. Good thing too because any Bones white showing through goes unnoticed.

I couldn't find the model number for this Frost Giant. I like doing snowy bases, and I tried to make his weapons look like they were hewn out of ice. I could have highlighted his skin better, looking at it now, but I think it serves well enough.

I present my finished Frost Wyrm As this is my first somewhat larger mini, it took me a bit more time to get started and to make a choice of colors. There is still plenty of room for improvement, but all in all I am very pleased with the end result. Last night I deciced to make a stand alone base out of super sculpey to display the Frost Wyrm when it is not in its "still under construction habitat" of the ice cave. Any C&C is as always much appreciated

I'm pretty happy with my Wall of Ice. The WIP is here. I tried doing the highlighting 2 different ways - I described it in the WIP - but I don't remember which is which anymore. I used a variety of inks - I'll have to get back about which ones exactly, I don't remember any more - to try and create some variety in the thickness of the ice, but it didn't work out so well. Edging was done with Reaper Ghost White. There's some happy accidents in there too where the brush slipped. If anyone's wondering, yes this is still see-through.

Hey everyone, I've been side tracked for a while but still managed to do some stuff on my models for my Ice diorama. I wanted to use my 2 Shaerileth spiders http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/65465-77180-shaerileth-spider-demoness/ together with a Frost wyrm in an ice cave diorama. I bought some Fimo effects clay to see if I could create a cool ice effect. I bought a pack of translucent white and a pack of ice blue I tried 3 different things, first I did a thin layer(about 2 mm) of blue and on top of that a thin layer of the white, made some cracks in it and baked it. When it was backed I added a bit of a blue wash on the underside and filled the cracks with a white wash. Next I made a blue layer, again about 2 mm thick and a white layer of the same thickness, made some cracks and baked both Blue, with a light blue wash on the underside and some white wash in the cracks White, with only a bit of white wash in the cracks The translucency is a lot less than I expected, but the sort of bubbles/patches in the material look pretty convincing for ice with snow or air trapped in it. I am still not sure which of the 3 I will use and maybe I will come up with something completly different to mimic an Ice sheet. Getting the Fimo to a nice thin sheet is a lot of work and took me close to 3 hours for the three of them. Which one do you all think looks like the best replication of ice? While baking the different Ice sheets I started on my Frost Wyrm. I cleaned most of the mould lines, washed it, glued it together, added some green stuff in between the parts and primed it with my airbrush and Vallejo Game air Wolf Grey. When it was primed i noticed a lot more imperfections so I redid the whole thing and added some more green stuff. It seems I find it hard to leave things without some modification so I added an extra horn on his head, redid his right jaw and added some feelers to the side of his head. I also added some green stuff to have all the rocky/scaley things on his back to cover the transition between parts. I then primed the wyrm again with my airbrush and Vallejo game air Wolf Grey. I have been trying a few different color scemes on paper to find what will best suits him but I am still thinking about which I will use. Progress will probably be slow, since I have a ton of other things to do and I am also working on a side project.
