Hello everyone! Not a painted miniature today, but still a Reaper Miniatures and a technique that might interest some of you. I gilded a Harapan model with 24 carat gold leaves. This technique can be applied to an entire figurine as I did, or only to a part of the model, on a section of armor for example. I used gilding paste, a paint brush and gold leaves. Harapan was sculpted by Jason Wiebe in 2005. It was produced in a limited edition to raise funds after the tsunami disasters that hit Southeast Asia in December 2004. As you can see I modified the original model. I removed his weapon and folded his finger. He now looks as if he was posing for a bodybuilding contest. Have a nice weekend!

Finally I can reveal my entry for the 2. Quarterly Reaper Miniatures painting contest. I am very pleased with the results and even placed fourth. The competition was strong as per usual and very impressive freehands as well as glow effects made the top three stand out. Rhianna is based on Reaper Miniatures Avatar of Resilience. I changed quite a bit about the miniature to fit the urban fantasy theme: New weapons, including a scratch-build pump gun, pants, leather straps across the chest and more. I had lots of fun converting this mini and painting her was also a good, if challenging experience. Pink is not usually a colour I choose, but here it really works. I used Kimera Colours Magenta with a bit of The White as a base colour. That was crazy vibrant, so I desaturated it with some grey. For the shadows I mixed some Purple into the Magenta which really helped to make it pop. Finally, highlights were applied using a baby pink. I had trouble getting the right look for the Juicy logo, but ended up using metallics for it. Micro dots failed and had to be painted over again. The small labels and garbage were also a first. The labels are all freehands and distressed afterwards. The cigarettes are small styrene strips and the Pepsi can made from some aluminium foil. So a few questions to spark discussion: How do you go about sequin, glitter or fake 'crystals' on miniatures? What is your favourite recipe for pink?

Hello everyone, here are some ensemble pictures of my entry in the "Dia de los Muertos" Sugar Skull Painting Contest. I had simply posted a closeup photo of the skull for the contest. This is the Bones version of 77116, Colossal Skeleton sculpted by Jason Wiebe. This Undead is Huge, 120mm tall, almost 5 inches. Notice I repositioned its arms and removed the shrouds that were hanging between its legs. The other elements on the base are from Reaper Miniatures as well. There are 77528, Graveyard Ruined Fences by Bob Ridolfi, a 77531, Graveyard Fence Post and 77731, Gargoyle Finials also by Bob Ridolfi, a 77538, Gravestone of Sorrow sculpted by Julie Guthrie and one of the 77534, Tombstones sculpted by Kevin Williams. I used roots, birch tree seed hulls and various synthetic mosses to complete the scene. The base is 75mm (3 inches) wide and was 3d printed. Enjoy!

This Special Edition Miniature was originally available only at the 2014 Reaper Artist Conference. It was later release under sku: 04044. The base is a 74024, 40mm square plastic base.

Hello everyone, now that the event is over, here are some more pictures of my entry in the 17th Quarterly contest. A big thanks to everybody that voted for me. This is a 77752, Female Minotaur sculpted by Jason Wiebe. It was a fun model to work on and I challenged myself painting object source lighting (OSL) on it. I made the fire with pieces of popsicle stick and Liquitex heavy gel medium.

Hello everyone, here is my converted Reaper Miniatures 01411, Harapan sculpted by Jason Wiebe. Back in 2005, this limited-edition model was produced to raising money after the Tsunami disasters in SE Asia. The funds collected were distributed to the Red Cross and Unicef. Nowadays, this mini is very hard to find and the molds were supposedly destroyed after production. I was lucky enough to find one and spent all my free time during the last two weeks converting, painting it and creating a base for it. I converted its weapon by replacing the blades with a cleaver and a tiger paw flail. You can see the original model on the last picture. The tiger paw is front paw of a 02817, Moor Hound. The tropical planted are plastic aquarium plants. I painted the blade as a damascus forged steel and added a blue/green sky and earth non-metallic metal SENMM effect on the metallic parts. I also added ceremonial painting on Harapan’s forehead. I have used Reaper MSP paint exclusively.

Hello everyone, some more metal models today. Mostly painted using dry brushing and tapping technique. Here is my take on Jason Wiebe's 02897 Hellhounds. I intend to use these Dark Heaven Legends models as Dire Wolf in my D&D games. I really like them, they will also fit as Worg or even Barghest if the opportunity arises. I painted them with Reaper MSP paint and fixed them on 50mm bases.

Good Friday everyone, I just took some pictures of the 02479, Ettin I completed last night. This is a Dark Heaven Legends metal model that was sculpted by Jason Wiebe. It stand on a 50mm base and I painted it with Reaper MSP paint. Coincidently, I was delighted to see the amazing upcoming two-headed Troll also sculpted by Jason Wiebe that was announced last night during Reaper Live #117 on Twitch. (see the image under spoiler and the end of the post).

Your party is travelling through the swamps when you hear a strange croaking noise...it sounds a bit like "wakkawakkawakka...fruit" The giant frogs from the Dreadmere expansion. More pics below

After the Northern Penguin aka Great Auk were hunted to extinction in 1844, the convergently evolved Penguins of the southern hemisphere continue to eke out their existence in the Antarctic. Of course, the reality of the north and south poles being totally separate worlds has never stopped people from making stories and images with, say, polar bears and penguins in them. Or walruses. (Or Pandas). Such as here at the North Pole where Santa lives, we also find Ice Golems using Giant Penguins as guardians on leashes. Sic 'im, Mumble! This is another mini from the Ral Partha Europe kickstarter "Wicked Wonderland" featuring the Evil Santa I painted around Christmas, and some other polar creatures. They are cast in metal, I made a 60x35mm base for them. Sadly, the christmas minis seem to have gone from the RPE webside. Maybe they are only availabe for Christmas? That still only counts as one, since they are connected and on the same base. Hey! I could've sworn you were tap-dancing just now! The three large penguins are from the Reaper Bones 4 kickstarter's Fan Favorites expansion, and released to retail together with the Dire Penguin as the "44104 Penguin Attack Pack". The smaller penguin comes from Reaper "02848 Familiar Pack V" and is made in metal. I painted it as a chick on account of the perfect size. And the Dire Penguin: Because, of course there has to be Dire versions of Penguins too. It craves your fish! This one did not want to be photographed against this background, and turned overexposed and invisible. We'll call it well camouflaged. I had to faff about with global settings in photoshop to make these pictures even viewble. The rest of the photos were unusable. I painted it for the Reaper challenge league's January three colour challenge: choose and use any specific blue, green, pink. together with white and black from Reaper's paint line. Mixing allowed, but only with those specific colours. You can see which ones I used in the picture. I chose to paint it as a kind of wierd Albino Penguin, and only mixed in a small amount of the green for shading. I did not have any other reaper black left, and had to use Nightmare Black which is a very dark blue black. I mean, Dire Penguin? That is some serious Cosmic Horror right there. Where is a Shoggoth when you need one to come and clean up? Oh, look a cavern full of valuable crystals. Hm, a tight fit. I am going to take off all my armour so I can crawl in there... From the Bones 4 Darkreach expansion 44049 Stone Lurker Sculpted by Jason Wiebe Bones Black 60mm base I think tentacles are all the more horrid when they are fleshy. This would be a Roper for D&D, in case that was not obvious. A stalagmite-lookalike ambush predator that waits for the unwary to pass by, coiled tentacles at the ready to spring out and drag the victium into its hungry maw. Dungeon delvers beware.

Happy New Year's Eve everyone. To end the year with a little snow, I completed this base today. I had painted the Yeti two years ago, and he was only lacking a thematic basis. This is the Bones version of 77434, Yeti Chieftain sculpted by Jason Wiebe. The artificial snow is BF4103 from Army Painter Battlefields. The icicles were made with pieces of translucent plastic and gloss Mod Podge.

Hello everyone, here are pictures of a cute but deadly little lady goblin. 14178, Skralla the Reven Hero was sculpted by Jason Wiebe. I painted her with Reaper MSP paint. According to the rumours; Skralla grew up near the Shores of the Sea of Stars, far from Monglash. She heard the tales of Razig and his undead crew, and has always wanted to join them. Knowing that Razig would never accept her unless she proved herself a true pirate, she raided Aizen Krahl one night and emerged with one of the dwarves' coveted guns and a trail of bearded corpses behind her. Now that she has the guns, the murder, the pillaging, and the rumming down, she has thrown in her lot with Varaug in hopes of meeting Razig one day and joining him. If only she had stolen ammunition, or knew how to load the wretched thing. Still, it serves her well with a blade tied on, and maybe Razig can teach her shooting.

Hi everyone, after sitting five months on the shelf, that being the projet (not me) I finally found time to complete my Gnolls display base. The base is 7.25 inches x 11 inches wide. Here are some pictures. Other pictures of the Gnolls can be found here.

At the very end of the Lost Valley, the bossfight: Clubtail! A plant eating 4-ton tank armed with a deadly morning star tail, an armoured hide with spikes, -a fantasy version of an Ankylosaur. The clubtail is larger than the fossil record of Ankylosaur supports. Also the spikes are overstated in comparison. A lot. At any rate, the Ankylosaur was contemporary with the Tyrannosaurus Rex and the Triceratops. All are from what is now North America in the late Cretaceous period, roughly 68 million years ago. It needed that armour. The question remains: What did it use the club-like tail for? To smesh predators? Rivals? Trees? An impressive display to attract mates? All of the above? And the clubtail has spikes. Did I mention the spikes? I detest painting spikes. It takes absolutely ages and I invariably lose patience and botch the job. These look OK for tabletop but do not stand up to close scrutiny at all. At least it is done. Together with the entire Lost Valley Expansion! Woot! The Clubtail is, in fact, the distant forebearer of the modern day Dragon Tortoise aka Koopa. Some time in the late 1990s I did an entire lizardman army for the fantasy wargame Raven by Harlequin miniatures. I am thinking of rebasing and touching up this army as a generic, system agnostic one. That army had some smaller raptors and also raptor riders. The paint scheme here is similar to how I painted those lizardmen back in the day, so these raptors should fit right in with this army. 44081: Raptor Hunting Pack (5) The paint scheme is rather simple and quick to paint and does not really require much precision: Deep green over black undercoat, followed by a heavy drybrush with a bottle green, such as Dark Angels Green or similar. Over this a lighter drybrush on the legs/arms and very very lightly on the belly and underside in general with an olive green such as 70.967 Vallejo Model Color Olive Green or the old citadel goblin green. The back gets some reddish brown or terracotta, followed by a sandy yellow/ochre that leaves some of the reddish brown visible around the edges. On this a light drybrush with 70.976 Vallejo Model Color Buff or similar bone yellow colour. Mix in some white for a final highlight if desired. Gloss black on claws, paint in the eyes as follows: the entire eyeball and eyesocket in black or something very dark. The eyeball in buff, then some transparent yellow (or citadel cassandora yellow shade) with some thinned transparent orange in the middle. When dry, a thin vertical line of black, followed by gloss varnish on only the eyeballs. Teeth in a light beige or whatever you like. I made 45x30 oval bases for them. I need to say that the Bones Black material is very good for PVC minis, and far superior to the regular white Bones material. But these minis have some questionable detailing around the hands and feet. Or should I say lumpy bits at the end of the legs? It would seem that the factory has maybe pulled a fast one on Reaper and the QC has let us all down on these specific minis by not spotting this and having it fixed before signing off on them. I don't really mind all that much as the bits in question are for the most part hidden in the basing flockmix, but it is a bit frustrating knowing that they both could and should have had crisper details on the feet and hand claws. Oi you lot! Gerroff my lawn!

So, is this inspired by Megalania, or is it something else entirely? Megalania was a giant monitor lizard that lived in Australia up to about 50.000 years ago, and might have been about this size compared to a human. It did as far as I know not have a spiney ridge all down the back or horizontally along the tail. Or is this more of a Crocodilian precursor like Dynamosuchus Collisensis that lived a whopping 230 million years ago, at the very Dawn of the Dinosaurs? That one would be smaller though, and still not have the back- and tailspines. At any rate, Hornslasher: Painting beasts such as this is a doddle: black undercoat, heavy dark blue drybrush, then some darkish greenish ochre and assorted sandy, green, and some pale blue grey. Pale belly and undersides. Claws and teeth in offwhite. I did some electric blue dots on the face just to get some colour in. This is mostly a case of throwing some colour on here and there to hint of stripes or patterns in the hide, and then to just stop at some point. A very light dusty drybrush to unify a bit and done. Dark purply red and pink in the mouth. I based it similarily to the Enormous Crocodile I did some weeks ago, with a thin, oval base that was half "muddy waters" going the length of the body. 100x50mm 3D printed base, built up to the left hindquarters with some scraps of plastic and putty. Still large enough to be a serious threat to the denizens of the Lost Valley.
