Male Dwarven Cleric with Warhammer from Dark Sword Miniatures.

Good evening all! here comes another rogue, the male version of the female that I just finished a few days ago. For both of them I did the same skin color, starting out with Olive Skin, but then the other colors I diverged. I was thinking, much unlike the earlier elves and half-elves I did, that rogues would be more chaotic and independent and wouldn't likely dress so similarly. I tried to give this guy that kind of reddish hair that you sometimes see with Afghan men on the TV, the ones that probably dye their beards. Didn't just want a black or deep brown. Don't know if it turned out like I'd hoped, would welcome your opinions: And here are a few photos of them together: I also did different bases on them. Upon hindsight, I probably should have done them both equally, but oh well, too late now!

Hello all! So I just finished working on this little thief, from Ral Partha's male and female range later on, maybe in the end of the eighties/beginning of the nineties, not so sure. I'm working on the male version, but that probably won't be finished for a few days. So used Reaper's Olive Skin as her base/mid-tone color, just in case anybody's curious. I think this was sculpted by Jeff Grace. Pretty simple miniature to paint. The one stickler was all her studs. Anyhows, hope you all enjoy!

Hi everyone, here are some group picture of my Player Character and a NPC in our D&D games. All Reaper Miniatures models; 03492, Autumn Bronzeleaf Elf Wizard sculpted by Jeff Grace. Converted 77038, Hell Hound sculpted by Ben Siens. 02771, Lorus Hightower sculpted by Sandra Garrity. The elf wizard is one of my player characters, she's a wood elf druidess and I called her Kiarah Amanodel aka Moonflower. Her riding dog Khan was converted from a Hell Hound. And, Firecracker will be an important non-playing character in an opcoming campaign. I hope you enjoy, comments and critiques are welcome.

Finally have gotten back to painting; what a joy !!! Felt like a major portion of my life had gone away. Poor Alfyn has been sitting on my desk forlorn for over 30 days. I finally said enough, and here he is finished. He is such a majestic Viking I wanted to get him elevated as he reminded me of my beloved Fjords. Well here he is at the pinnacle of a fjord looking at his dragon boat pulled up on the shore. Feel free to make any comments, criticisms, they're ALL appreciated. So here is Alfyn Crowkiller Wilding Captain as I envisioned him. Jasonator.

I started working on this several days ago. Few Tricky spots (sword sheath wants to be flat against body, bends as you paint. The piece has some DEEP recesses, and it's going to be fun playing with the darks, shadows and lights. I experimented on hair and beard to see what they will look like highlighted. Some washes will bring those under control. Think a snow capped plinth, or flowered one might be in order. This piece needs a well thought out base ! Hello all, so here are two figures I just finished recently from Ral Partha. The first one is from the Larry Elmore set Bones of the Past, I think sculpted by Jeff Grace, which was based off a painting Larry Elmore did I think perhaps for a book cover. I tried to actually use the same color scheme on my mini as showed up in the painting, but I ended up changing up the belt because in the painting it was red and she already had red details and pants. I did the other figure a wile back ago, the gal with the purse, loincloth and little else. Here's the link to that one: I think, that linked up okay. Then here is another figure I did, Jee-Anna the armored warrior priest (ess) a figure sculpted by Jim Johnson quite a while back ago. I really like this figure and wanted to give her just dark, blacks and greys, so hopefully with this color scheme I ended up getting what I wanted. With the base, I ended up sculpting some more stones because it was one of those stone floor bases. Anyway, hope you enjoy them!

Just finished up with "Cadence", the figure is a modification of Dark Sword Miniatures Female Rogue (DSM-7437) where I cut off the dagger in the off-hand and added the lute from Reaper's Adventuring Accessories (02638) to make her into the party bard. For the January/February RPChallenge, one of the bonus challenges was: I immediately knew what figure I was going to use but unfortunately she caused me quite a lot of trouble, especially her wings. Fortunately, Jessica Rich very kindly helped me out with some great advice and thus released me from my downward spiral. The base is by Scibor miniatures and was a lot of fun to paint. I've been very pleased with every resin piece I've ever gotten from Scibor and this was no exception. There weren't even any mold lines to clean up. Anyway, I hope y'all like her! (Pics are a little washed out...I probably should've used a darker background. Oh well. .....and I just realized that the jar she's sitting on looks like it's part of the base....it's not, I just should've put the jar under the background fabric. I just paint things, man, I'm not a professional photographer. )

So I'm painting this lady up for the January/February Resolutionary Painting Challenge - bonus challenge #1 which says to paint up a figure as a classic horror creature. I've been working on her off and on for the past couple of weeks so I'll spare you every single picture I've taken during the process, but basically she started out here: Then I painted in her eyes and started working on her skin. So fast forward to last night where I decided to start working on highlighting the red and.... well I knew at the time that I'd gone way orange, I just hadn't realized that I'd gone THIS orange. So tonight I worked on glazing everything back to red. I'm happier with the wings, but I really regret how much I obliterated the highlighting on the skirt. But, this is how it goes sometimes, right? Push and pull, make mistakes and work on fixing them. Here's where she's at now:

Much to my amazement I just finished the Mini. I have to say that this one put me through my paces. I suspect that after three years of painting mini's I have gotten a lot tougher on myself when it comes to how I think my Miniatures should look. I've gotten quite demanding I fear. Since it only applies to my work, thats okay. I glued the mini prior to priming and painting, which makes things much more difficult. On the white front cloth I drew in light gold designs, they are barely seen, The cloak was a blast to paint as was the armor, face and hair. I had to give him that reddish hair just to make our resident Canadian Ranger happy.. Hope he meets your approval robinh. The base was a blast, but a lot more difficult than it looks.Painting the flowers in was a hoot. So, here is my interpretation of the Male Ranger With Bow. Thanks to those that shared their ideas. My hands are saying Rain and T-storms tomorrow, its wonderful being able to predict the weather (NOT). Any comments/Critiques greatly appreciated, and sought after.. Here he is:

Hi Gang, I really didn't want to start another WIP, when I started thinking about a base for this mini. He has frustrated me from the git-go. (Some are just that way). I was thinking of doing a base with bark, and making a scene where he is standing on a cliff, getting ready to take a shot off. I know I can pull that off, but was thinking if there was some other way of basing him...?? Anyone have any ideas ? No building of structures (hands aren't up to that right now. Here is what he looks like. The little hole in his pants is where the sword and belt get attached. That will go on last, since I have pegged this beast five times so far, and that sword will snap as I am mounting the mini in its base. Any Ideas? Input appreciated, Jay

This is a PC (oracle, half-elf) from a campaign we finished last November. I altered (made less "poofy") her hair and changed out the top of her staff. Not happy at all with the face but this is the Bones version and it was slightly miscast/wonky. I was quite happy with the gradient on her robes which doesn't show that well here. Table Top quality, but I do take a bit longer on PC models. Phone pics suck, sorry.

Here was my main entry for the Gencon MHE competition this year. Every year, I spend a lot of time painting a few minis, then enter any gaming miniatures I have that fit the categories. He got a gold award from the main competition, received a judge's choice award, and took home the 4th place Dark Sword trophy. I really love this mini- the biggest trouble I had painting him up was that Jim (owner of Darksword) owns a fantastic version of him painted by Zach Lanier. A lot of the decisions that I made on him kept this sort of meta-thinking in mind (ie, when Jim and Jess were judging the contest, I didn't want them to be comparing him to Zach's mini too much). I think I came out with an interpretation of this mini that is all my own. I've also posted him to Coolmini, for anyone who cares to vote.

I think if you just look at this Miniature, you will know I was having a fantastic time. This provided lots of experience in cleaning (nasty mold line filing), and ran me through the gauntlet of any skills I have. I used some freehand painting on shield; and played with black and white photos working the shadows. Highlighting was a hoot ! The opportunity to take this figure in a thousand different directions is amazing. Needless to say, I have totally enjoyed this Miniature. I hope the rest that I have to do prove to be as entertaining. As always, your comments and critiques are appreciated, and requested. Here is what I have done with the Minature:

I'm doing something a little different. Rather than do a WIP, I'm kinda doing an "Okay this is what I am up to". I'll post things to this "WIP" as I move along. Gets me away from the "do some work, take photos, edit photos, crop photos, post photos syndrome. I need to focus on just painting for a bit. So, here is the mini almost all base painted. I'm planning on some freehand on that shield. He's also painted in old bronze for the armor.

This one was done for an exchange. Hope he likes it! She was an ambitious project that challenged me in several ways. I am very happy with how she came out, but she was deffinately a learning experience. Comments and critiques very appreciated.

This is a diorama I created. Last year, I got to talk to Jeff Grace (he's responsible for a lot of great minis from Dark Sword, Privateer Press, Reaper and others). We talked a little bit about how easy it would be to make some of his Dark Sword minis into Star Wars characters, and how cool it would be if someone made a diorama of a dueling Jedi and Sith and entered it into the painting competition. Naturally, I agreed that such a thing should happen. I'm not totally sure that he meant it as a challenge. I think sometimes people get surprised when I run away with an idea like this. But here is the result. It received an honorable mention in the Masterclass competition. I have posted this to Coolmini for anyone who cares to vote.

After a long break from painting minis, I got back to the workbench early this month. I've completed 3, just to shake the rust off my already weak skills. Encouraged by making some progress and starting to enjoy painting again, I started work on Carinth, a Reaper Dark Elf sitting incomplete for a couple of years. She was originally intended for a contest entry, but now I'd just like to figure out the lighting challenges, experiment with this two-model method, learn some new things and generally improve. The 'two model method' is an idea that has been around for a while, but given the cost of most minis these days, is understandably not a popular technique. With a comparatively cheap, older model, I can give it a shot. The idea is to use one for practice, to work out the problems and make mistakes. The other is for a better attempt, working at perfekt. :-) The design/story: Drow priestess in a deep cavern, protected by magic glowing staff, dips her magic sword in lava to imbue it with greater power. Challenges: I've not done a lava base before now, and it seems there are now 4 light sources at work on this mini. Ambient/overhead is somewhat weak, but present; lava flowing in several spots in the base will give some under-lighting; the top of her staff will be glowing blue/white; the sword has a blob of lava dripping from it. First up is the "better" version we'll call Carinth-A. Next is Carinth-B, the draft version where I got rather ahead of myself in playing around with lighting effects: Comments, critiquesm questions and suggestions are all welcome, here. I want to improve, so chime in, please!

I've got some scenic bases in the mail so I wanted to experiment with them before I use them on my winter exchange. I chopped off Michelle's broccoli base with a hobby knife then decided to replace her wobbly weapons with metal ones. I didn't have two matching swords so she gets sword and dagger instead. The sword was SOOO easy to mod. I just chopped off the old one, drilled straight through her hand with a drillbit about 1 size too small. I then used the bendy nature of Bones to my benefit and just wiggled it in there and through. The sword is held entirely by her rubber-band hands - there's not a drop of glue. The dagger was slightly more problematic because it had a pommel that was quite a bit bigger than the grip. I had to cut off the pommel (and promptly lost it), so I glued the original pommel back on. The dagger is secure as well - it might have a little bit of glue, but it's mostly friction as well. There's something weird/wrong with her right eye. Anyone else have this problem? There's zero chance I can fix the sculpt without ruining it, and I probably can't do good enough paint plastic surgery, so she might get an eye patch, or magical jewel-eye or something.
