I challenged myself to paint more of the larger (bigger than human) sized figures this year. This was one I thought came out relatively well. The pig gives you a sense of how large he really is.

It's from Kabuki 1/6 scale. Since she's a Not Red Sonja, I gave her warpaint like Conan has. I tried a freehand tattoo, it's supposed to be a stylized Dragon/Snake eating his own tail. A little something I picked up from my FLGS's discount bin; this 54mm scale mummified minotaur comes with a choice of horns and pole-cleavers to attach to an otherwise simple assembly. Here are the parts laid out before priming. I still struggle to decide which horns and weapon to build him with. Using one means not using the other, after all, but I figure they'll find another place to go eventually.

This weekend I finished up the Griffon figure from the Bones 1 Kickstarter. As some of you may know, I have been chronicling the painting of all the figures I received from the Bones 1 Kickstarter on my All Bones About It Blog. Well, completing the Griffon puts me on the threshold of the final ten figures of this endeavor. The Griffon being done, figure 256 of 266 figures, leaves just 10 figures left for me to paint. A few months ago I began working on the Mashaaf, Great Old One, add-on figure from Bones II, and had gotten as far as washing it, assembling it, and spraying it with a base coat. It had then sat gathering dust, waiting for me to find inspiration to complete it. Then, with the successful competition of my Kalladrax figure a couple weeks ago, I felt emboldened to bite the bullet and finish this figure up as well. When purchasing this figure I had some vague idea of using it for my Pulp mash-up Space1889/John Carter of Mars games, so I pictured in some sort of tan,brown,reddish type of color scheme. However, I didn't want to limit it to just Mars, so I wanted to tone the base colors down so they might just as well blend in with any desert setting. A few of my dragons that I have based (unpainted) have started to bend downward. Particularly the tall upright dragons standing on 2 legs. Some have even gotten to the point of their heads touching the floor. Bones material conforms to gravity overtime. Have any of you had this happen? What do you do about it?

36" from tip to props, The Rim Greaper is a VSF/Steampunk Victorian SciFi flying ironclad ship built from a plastic aircraft carrier toy. In-universe, flight is achieved by electrically charging the Unobtanium plating on the hull, the arc cannons on deck work off the same principle, and the Aetheric Lance on the prow works because the Story Says It Does. She was comissioned by Her Majesty's Royal Navy, constructed by barrister-turned shipwright Sir Andrew St. George, and assisted by the local Mechanaether Guild. Construction took about three weeks of evenings, and painting took maybe five evenings. My son helped a great deal with the concepts and making sure it was a playable surface. The top comes off and attaches to the hull by magnets. The bridge fits inside the superstructure. A couple more firsts on this guy with the gems and the base. And I had a lot of fun painting him. Enjoy edit: So I have to admit I got a little exited playing with new toys last night and rushed the picture process. But I just wasn't happy with how dark they turned out. After another read through of the Miniatures Photography 101 I think I did a much better job today. Now You can see all the detail good and bad!

As another part of the 54mm challenge Ub3r N3rd and Dontfear started I have chosen this one from Legendarion. Gebhuza Hyena Warrior Bust, Awesome sculpt, no flash at all... Only the sword is separate so no filling gaps with greenstuff, just clean it, paint it.. The "paint it" part is easier said then done, sooo much detail.. all those knives... He's amazing. So first Pic, right out of the box. Pleas be patient with me, I've got three busts a 54mm and a 28mm on my workbench now.

I've painted very few monsters, and I thought I'd get my toes wet by doing up a few rather iconic minis in the fire and water elementals from Bones I and II. I really like these guys. I need to pick up an earth elemental still, and have my fingers crossed for an air elemental in Bones III to round out the elemental quartet. I wish that the store weren't out (again/still) of the fire elemental, as I'd love to have another one. This one belongs to my roommate. He likes collecting Reaper minis, but doesn't paint them. So good news is I have plenty of minis to practice on. Bad news is once I move out from living with him, he'll have the majority of the minis. My hoard is growing, but slowly, as I have to wait for them to be in stock and also have money to spend (I missed the Kickstarters -- getting in on Bones III though!). Anywho, the fire elemental I used a yellow wash, then drybrushed him after. The water elemental was just drybrushing. The darker blue on that one is the base mini's color.

This was a guy I bought/painted for Wolfie for the Spring Exchange (waited to confirm receipt before posting pictures.) Never really painted a 'wet skinned' creature before, and not usually metal at that. I posed him differently than the reaper store listed him as, to make it, I think, more dynamic.

Somewhere someone on this board used the clear tamiya paints on their translucent bones, I can't remember who it was offhand, and I tried it and have painted all of my translucent bones with this paint first. I though I'd show the difference that this paint makes on these figures by painting two fire elementals. I slathered Tamiya clear red onto both figures generously. Unlike most basecoats, a thick coat won't obscure details like regular paint would, it just take longer to dry. A word of warning, while this paint does clean up with water, it is still a solvent based paint and does have an odor, take precautions and use in a ventilated area, also don't use your good Kolinsky brushes as this paint WILL STAIN brushes (and Jeans). I used a synthetic flat bristle brush size 2 for the basecoating. So, on to the Pictoral commentary... This is the Medium Fire Elemental right out of the package. And this is the same elemental after being painted in Tamiya Clear red paint. Bear in mind that this paint is dried when the picture was taken. Here is a (Hopefully) better side by side comparison with the Large fire elemental. And here is just the large fire elemental after being painted. I will be adding other fire colors as I go, I've already started adding some yellow details to the large Elemental and I'll post and update as I get each color added. hopefully this helps some of you who are looking to intensify the coloring of your translucent bones. This also works with the Green translucents and tamiya clear green.

Last weekend saw me at a craft show watching my wife's stuff while she got to practice Karate in Okinawa. So with my time I painted... A lot. This is my second figure I did over the weekend. It was a great time to just spend a concerted 16 hours primarily painting and talking. (two things I really cant get enough of...) Anyway this is the, I think, the biggest mass of metal that Reaper ever produced. Weighing in at just under 3 pounds he was curling exercise to lift and paint. Not quite as happy with the paint as I was with Verocithrax but he still came out pretty well. Comments and critique always welcome.
