I'd never felt I had an artistic bone in my body until I started painting minis. Well, now, I decided I'm going to try my hand at 2D art. I am following along Bob Ross videos on YouTube. I will note, and this is probably very important, that I am using acrylic paint and not oils. I did not want to spend oil paint prices since this is a new thing for me. These are the two I've done: Day 1: I learned a lot, I needed to do something with my paint to extend the drying time. This would have helped with the blending. Overall, happy with it excepting the house. 2: I used some slow dry medium mixed into the paint today. Not sure if it was not mixed well enough or I didn't use enough but it only gave me like 5 minutes or less of extra working time. If anyone has any suggestions for how to use slow dry medium, please, let me know. I'm using heavy bodied acrylic tube paints. I followed along until the end and I decided to add some darker blue and green. I think that helped a lot. Another note, need to find sturdier paper. While this is holding up it likes to curl slightly while drying. The second one is taped to the desk on the back to try to minimize that problem. I am currently using a mixed media paper.

So, I just started painting this weekend. Spent the last week watching every dang youtube video I could find lol. I was so excited to get my kit from Amazon. Opened it up...missing the skeleton figure! Dang it!. Ran up to my FLGS and bought a different skeleton (which I think was *MUCH* harder as a first project!). Overall, I really enjoyed it and you can definitely see progress from the skeleton to the ogre to the knight. I added some extra details to the knight and really liked the way he turned out. Already have more figures on order. My DnD GM offered me a deal on keeping 30% of what I paint of his hundreds of figures too, so I'm not going to lack projects!

I decided to let both my sons paint a few of my Bones figures over the weekend. The weather was dire so I expected a few hours of interest. The youngest (4.5) lasted about and hour where as the oldest (6) kept going for five hours until I had run out of primed models. I was really impressed with how they did although I did buy cheap brushes as the concept of maintaining a tip didn't stay for very long. Drybrushing and a few washes were used and I have since varnished the models. Here was the first set of models. Here was my youngest sons model. And here was my oldest interpretation of The Hulk I can't recommend it more and I am sure I won't be the last to post their kids attempts.

So today Dilvish and I went to visit Aard_Rinn and she gave me three cool brushes. (Thanks again Aard!) When I got home I immediately started to work on a serving wench for my D&D group, our last in school meet is next Friday. After I finished with everything Dilvish said the tomorrow he would teach me how to highlight hair on my minnies! I'm so excited! I'm gonna be posting picture of it as soon as I finish.

I've just started painting, so I thought I'd post things I'm working on and hopefully get some hints on where to go next. First up are some Bones Goblins. My two goals for this are to develop better contrast and tweak my techniques so that painting goes more quickly. I started with a base coat of walnut brown for 3 and blacked brown for the other 3. I'd definitely do them all in walnut brown if I had it to do again. Then I put down a base coat of olive green for the skin. The metals are true silver mixed with true black or mahogany brown. Then I put on either oiled leather or ruddy leather for the leathers and made various color hats (for tracking which is which when gaming) The next steps will be to finish base coating the cloth bits and the various accessories and then blending to add shadows and highlights to the skin, leathers and hats. I'll probably had some pure metal highlights to the metal bits too, they don't stand out as well as I'd like.

Starting a paint club in Greenville, SC. Trying to meet the first Saturday of the month from noonish until 3 or 4 pm. First meeting will coincide with the FLGS quarterly game day, so there will be other things for the significant others to do while you paint!
