  1. OH CURSE YOU GOBLIN! A friend gave me this for Christmas 10+ years ago, and I have always been afraid to paint it, as I had the 'I'm not good enough now' syndrome.... Then seeing Siri's Tia-not, and then Buglips' thread on this beastie, (I mean her Dark Majesty) the 5 little voices have been saying do it, paint it, Ma'al Drakkar will be here in a year... (I need to look Good, in an evil sort of way, for that big guy!) And since my air compressor died tonight, I thought maybe I could kill my Dremel tool to! Going to do prep work tonight, so won't be anything exciting, but I snapped a few pics to show the components. I don't have Sir Forscale, so I brought in his bard, Astrid the Chronicler, to show you all their sheer size... (What is this wench doing strolling around my parts!!) (Ma'al is gonna be scary!) Pics: The Vrock I am working on to show the wing span: This also to motivate me to work on it, so that I can have it ready for the end of the year.... DDS 2 is in the mail to.... Think I might be biting off more than I can get in my mouth, never mind chew... Wish me luck! Gonna need it! (If you don't get back to work, you'll need more than LUCK!) 8) George (Are you finished nattering yet slave? I need to be cleaned!) (coming your Darkness!) Now Buglips has ME doing it! Buglips' post on This figure
  2. I am not above blatant copying if it will push my skills and teach me something. @Wren Your version of this was The Definitive version of this figure, in my mind. Her post is here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/72285-1596-joy-winter-fairy/&tab=comments#comment-1483083 There have also been some other lovely versions of Joy. I am a character in a Reign of Winter campaign for Pathfinder. The DM gave me a list of monsters we will fight, and a fairy type fey is in there, so I figured it would be a great excuse to paint my Joy. I haven't tried blue skin before. That was the reason I wanted to copy Wren's version. Here are some pics. This is the first time I've used my iPhone for pics. It does a good job getting close, but the white balance seems a little yellow. Someone had asked Wren about Reaper sparkle paints. I went ahead and tried some Sparkling Snow in the wing membranes, but it didn't show enough in hand. So, I glazed the wing membranes and her cheeks and her base with a very thin layer of Vallejo Model Color Metal Medium. You can't see it well in the pictures, but it is a nice effect in hand. I was least happy with the base. I tried to sculpt snow overhanging her base with green stuff. Just not the effect my mind's eye was seeking. I am most happy with her eyes and face. I tried to glaze some pink and purple and sparkle into her face to warm it up and give her some pixie dust effect. Again, not showing up great in the photos, but I like the effect in hand. Her left eye I managed to get on the first try. It really represents my best luck with an eye. The Iris is a mix of Spectral Glow and Moth Green. I remembered Wren's Joy having greenish eyes, but thought they looked otherwise human, so I painted these that way. Then I reviewed Wren's Joy, and her eyes looked otherworldly. You can see, I had a "Dicken's" of a time trying to get the right eye to match the left. I never could, but after 10 tries, this is the best I could do. At arm's length, it looks fine. For anyone interested, paint recipes are spoilered here: Overall, I'm very pleased with it. I hope I did the original inspiration justice.
  3. I'm now finished with Nosferatu and have taken final pics. He came out as I intended and I got some very valuable feedback on the skin tones from awesome forum-mates. WIP found here: I present to you, Nosferatu, vampire lord from Green Monkey Models! C&C are welcomed and greatly appreciated! I'm also going to bring him to ReaperCon and enter him into the big figures contest on the forum
  4. Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, Children of All Ages, Creatures of Every Type, Shade, and Hue, and buglips*the*goblin, I give you.... ME! I Finished Herself this evening, and then Had Her pose for an exclusive photo-shoot. Without Further Ado, The Queen of Chromatic Dragons! I took a shot of the photo set up as well: All pics were shot from 5+' away, then cropped with Photo Shop, Color and contrast corrected as well. It was a journey to get here, and my thanks to all those that looked in on the WiP from time to time, and special thanks to those that commented and encouraged me to keep going! And of course kept Her distracted as well.... George Human Avatar Here
  5. This is the Hill Giant from Gale Force 9 Dungeons & Dragons Collector's Series (SKU GF971030). An awesome dynamic sculpt. I don't think I have spent as much time dinking with skin on a mini as I did on this guy. His base skin color is a mix of Tanned Skin and Rosy Shadow, with Rosy Skin and Tan Skin highlights and Sunburn Flesh as a wash. I also glazed in some darker brown in the recesses. Edit: I am having trouble with the pictures staying put
  6. So I went to my box of minis to see if I had any Terrain stuff I could paint up quickly, and saw a box peeking out from under the pile... When I pulled the box out and saw what it was, I had to sit down for a moment. I was from something my wife and I, with some friends from our gaming group had ordered from Reaper (with a bunch of other minis) shortly after we got married. The order was placed in the spring of 1998! and was the very first order I ever made with Reaper... I give you 10001, The Druid's Stone! The parts: and the inscription on the bottom of the base Wonder if I am up to painting this.... 8) George Edited to fix pics after location change
  7. This is my other type of Large-Hatted dwarven mercenary/evil dwarf. He came out really well. Basing is cork, with the lava itself being liquitex matte medium, with a drop for the bubble. And yes, I'm well aware that he should be dead standing there. I don't mind. He doesn't seem to mind, either. His intent is to be the leader of the "Betrayal of Fire" evil dwarves working against the classic GW Chaos Dwarves and other Dark-Sculpted monstrosities. I'm very happy with him.
  8. I painted this little guy up as an exchange figure for pcktlnt for the Secret Sophie 2014 exchange. I had a platypus, I knew pcktlnt loves platypuses (platypi? platypodes?), it seemed like a no-brainer. I wish I would have given myself time to do the potion bottle properly; I did watch/read a couple of tutorials on the subject, but the colored part kept creeping closer and closer to the top of the bottle as I tried to make the line straight, until eventually I just decided to make the whole bottle orange and be done with it. I'm quite happy with how the fur turned out, though, and it was actually a happy accident how it happened. I'd painted all of the fur, and then went back and double-checked it against my reference pictures...and found that I'd neglected to paint his front white. So, I decided to try lightly drybrushing a light color over the tops of the very well-sculpted fur, and discovered that it actually looked really cool. So I did it some more, and still liked it, and ended up heavily drybrushing all over his front, leaving the dark fur colors visible beneath. Huzzah for serendipitous discoveries! Here's a picture of the back view, where it is painfully obvious that I had no clue what I was doing with regards to the shading on his cloak. You can see on the right side that I put shadows on both sides of the fold in the cloth, because I wasn't 100% certain which direction I wanted the light to be coming from. I tried to use my desk lamp to help guide me where I should put highlighting and shadows, which helped for most of the figure, but not for this cloak. :P Overall, I'm very happy with how he turned out; I really worked on pushing the highlights on the cloak up higher than I usually do, and I think that really helped the cloak pop in front. :) Huzzah! --OneBoot :D EDIT: Modified a tag
  9. I'm curious about how people feel about the following limited paint colors: Deadrose Red Bubblegum Pink Christmas Wreath Powderburn Brown Pirate Gold Carnival Purple Clouded Sea Clockwork Brass Big Top Red Ginger Cookie Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Reptilian Green I have read many great things about ones like Clockwork Brass. But I would be curious to know (and assume others would also) how people have used these colors on their figures. How might you highlight, shade, or base coat with them. Any general feelings on what makes the color good or how you have used and liked them. And ONLY comments about the paint colors and your opinions on them please! Let's keep on topic about usage and similar things.
