  1. Most of these aren't up to date and I've changed bits of them here and there since these, I'll be saving those shots for the finished product, but hopefully you enjoy the journey.
  2. Alternative Title: How Morihalda Achieved Maximum Distraction from 14 Other WIP Threads: A Story. Chapter One 6 November. My husband and I went on a date to the museum. We always have so much fun there and learn so many new things! I saw an absolutely gorgeous snake and thought, "Wow, that would be an excellent dragon pattern. OH WOW Ma'al could be five different reptile patterns!!" I'd been wanting to do a skeletal or blacklight theme for him for forever, but I decided those would be better suited on a smaller dragon. I spent some time that night researching snakes, lizards (and the occasional amphibian), and habitats before settling on some patterns. I spent a few more hours cleaning up mold lines and convincing myself that I don't need to resculpt these perfect heads! Red - Fire Skink Black - Lace Monitor Green - Green Iguana Blue - Blue Tree Monitor White - Blue tongue Skink Body - Fire Skink This Boelen's Python didn't make the cut since I settled on lizards, but look at that good son! He's going to be my black dragon one day. The red fire skink will be inspiration for both the red head and body. It has so many amazing colors that will help bring all the faces together. I'm thinking the wings will be muted on the underside to match the black and white heads and more fire skink on the top. This means the black and white heads need to be the middle level heads - there's a beautiful curve from them leading to each wing. My tentative color blocking. Good enough for an art gallery, yeah? ;) Chapter Two 7 November. I spent over three hours this afternoon pinning, gluing, and green stuffing specific sections. The wing gaps and one of the legs are pretty rough, but the head scales perfectly cover the neck scales! Almost like it was planned. Chapter Three 8 November. I am still prepping. There is still barely enough done to warrant a forum post. All I have to show you are stabby holes in my hands (yes I will be using a holder/lazy Susan when painting, but I need all the angles while sculpting). Either I got one that was a little uneven or I'm just way more picky than some folks, but I have had a ton of gap filling to do for the legs. How did some of you do this in 7 days?! Someone send me rations and supplies to survive!
  3. Hello, all! I'm planning to paint Ma'al Drakar as Dungeons & Dragons' Dark Lady, Tiamat. She's going to be, by far, my biggest painting project. Before I start painting, I'm planning some conversions to make her look more like D&D's Chromatic Dragon. I'd love to get any advice or tips that anyone would like to share about painting large models, or any of the other parts of the process. I'll share my plans, and try to keep up a WIP thread about this grand adventure. My first step is going to be pretty drastic, so if anyone wants to jump in with advice, please do. I have WotC's Gargantuan Black Dragon. The forward-sweeping horns are so iconic, my Tiamat's black dragon head (Ma'al's lower right head) should have horns like that. The Gargantuan Black's a perfect scale to use for Tiamat's horns. I'm actually planning to carefully cut the horns off the black dragon, make a 2-part mold, cast a set of horns for Tiamat, and reattach the horns back on the black dragon. Am I out of my mind? Does any one see potential problems with this plan, other than the usual challenges of casting minis, etc? Thanks in advance for any advice, feedback, and encouragement!
  4. Ordered Ma'al Drakar to play the role of Tiamat in my Rise of Tiamat campaign I'm currently running. (Icons of the realm Tiamat is just to small IMHO) Having just received it in the mail I'm finally understanding the scale of the project I have Doomed myself to. Lol I was wondering if people had tips on mold line removal for pieces this large, what you suggest for Gap filling between all the assembled pieces, should I prime before assembly, and if there is a best way (or horribly wrong way) to pin all the pieces together.
  5. After declaration of completion in your WIP thread, you have 2 hours to submit your official entry photos in this thread (this is to allow time for setting up of photo taking area). Up to 5 pictures per entry may be submitted. This thread will be open for submission of completed entries until midnight CST on August 1st 2018. Questions? Ask them here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/75387-maal-drakar-7-day-goblin-contest-launch-date For the index of WIP and Show-off threads, go here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/75793-maal-drakar-7-day-challenge-index-of-threads/ Best of luck! Huzzah! --OneBoot :D
  6. OneBoot and I will be kicking off this latest 7-day challenge on August 1st, 2017 and it will run for a full year until August 1st, 2018. This is to give participants time to arrange for a 7-day block of time to work on the piece, as it will likely need every minute! This will be the first 7-Day challenge to have a contest component for best completed entry, which will have a prize. My understanding is that Reaper will provide a gift certificate ($50 was the amount discussed) for the ultimate winner. (As I am running the contest, I am of course not eligible for the prize) Any additional information updates will be posted here. As with all 7-Day Goblin Challenges, this will adhere to the Goblin Challenge Rules here: Note that extra terrain work/basing outside of what is included with the piece is not judged as part of the finished process, so it will not count towards making your finished piece the prettiest. Only the finished work of the basic model (all of what is included at retail) is considered, so budget your time and efforts appropriately. Make sure you read the official challenge rules and stick by them so that you don't wind up accidentally disqualified. For this one, filling gaps and cleaning mold lines will count towards the finished piece. (Other normal challenges they don't since they don't compete with each other for prizes, that is just for this particular contest)
  7. This thread will serve as an index of all the Work in Progress and Show-off threads created by participants in this glorious madness. Don't post your entries here! Please make your own threads, then make a post here with links to them. Thread for Official Entries is here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/76081-maal-drakar-7-day-challenge-official-entries-no-chatter/ The Challenge will begin on August 1st 2017, and will be open for submission of completed entries until midnight CST on August 1st 2018. For further information, please see this thread. Please familiarize yourself with the Official Rules BEFORE you start your Challenge! We don't want to have to disqualify anyone's hard work! Official Rules: Link to FAQ: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/69639-7-day-goblin-challenge-official-rules/ Now, forth, and fear no dragon! Arise! Arise, Painters of Ma'al Drakar! Paints shall be shaken! Brushes shall be splintered! A glorious day... A Seven day... Ere the deadline rises!!!
  8. The title says it all Has anyone come up with stats for pathfinder for Ma'al Drakar?
  9. So- finished I think. Resculpted/modded the 5 heads, and then sculpted the base out to match. Thoughts?
  10. figured I'd post to see peoples thoughts on my WIP conversion of Ma'al Drakar to Tiamat. Converted the heads and added the stinger.
  11. Have posted this in the WIP, and I think I'm finally to the point that I can say that Ma'al Drakar is finished :) Now, if I could just figure out how to photograph it well enough to show it off the way it actually looks would be great, but until then these will have to do. Some of the things that I really think turned out well are the horns (found a new tutorial on how to do them and I think that it helped a LOT), the rust effect skin, and I even added a few small details like weeds growing in the rocks and some algae growing in some of the cracks :) All in all, I think this has to be one of the best minis I've ever painted!
  12. No, I'm not neutering a 5 headed dragon, I'm fixing the sloppiness that occurred on Ma'al Drakar due to the time crunch during my 7 day challenge. First things first: Those aren't spots I missed, those are spots that I just spent the last few hours scraping with an x-acto to remove the mold lines that I'd missed. Yes, it was absolutely as heartbreaking to do as you think it was. I thought someone might find some use in seeing how I'm going about reworking things in my attempt to bring this beastie to Reapercon. So the destruction's done, next step, patching things up and continuing working on the mold lines I couldn't scrape off.
  13. Showing off my freshly painted goblin 7 day challenge Ma'al drakar. This challenge was not what I was expecting. I thought that attempting a miniature of this size in a short time span would stress me out, but apparently I'm weird because this has been the most relaxing week I've had in a while.
  14. So just a little thing that I finished on Monday. WIP thread is here if you missed it: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/76415-guindyloo-vs-maal-drakar-in-7-days/&page=1 These are just some of the pictures that I took after I finished when I was half dead. If you want to see something specific, let me know and I can take some more. Most likely, I will be working on this some more post challenge, so I wanted to get a show off up before I change too much....if that's a thing that I do.
  15. Not gonna lie, I'm really nervous about this one. I may be making a terrible mistake, but I am going to be attempting to paint this giant 5 headed dragon in 7 days with a size 0 brush while working my usual work schedule that tends to run around 56 hours. I will have a 3 day weekend to end it out, but I originally wanted to take a solid week off to do this, but my work situation may be changing in the next couple of months - nothing bad, mind you, but I might not have as much time off as I have in previous years and I'd rather not wait until the holidays to see how things shake out. Let's be real here, doing this particular challenge while working a 56 hour week is not just crazy, it's stupid. But it's what I have to work with and I am probably both crazy and stupid. I have the added complication that we are probably going to get a lot of throw off rain coming over from Harvey and my area does flood, so I may lose even more hours if I get stuck at the office or stuck in the grocery parking lot waiting for the water to go down. Or the power could go out and I will have to paint by candlelight. Everybody keep your fingers crossed for me that such things will not occur. So here's my version of the roolz. If you're new to the 7 day challenges, take my version only as an amusing thing to read and check out the Official rules here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/69639-7-day-goblin-challenge-official-rules/ 1) Thou shalt not use any brush larger than a standard size 0. 0 shall be the number on the brush, and the number on the brush shall be 0. 1 shalt thou not use, neither use thou 2, excepting that thou ensures that it is actually 0/2 on the brush. 5 is right out. Once the size 0, being the correct number, be reached, then lobbest thy size 0 brush towards thy foe, who being made of Bones, shall be painted. 2) 7 full days (168 consecutive hours) from when the timer starts are all the time that is allowed in this challenge; whether that time is spent working, sleeping, painting or sobbing uncontrollably is up to the participant. The timer starts with the posting of a picture of all of the many pieces of Ma'al Drakar and the intended brush(es) to be used and a device bearing the participant's local time. The challenge will therefore end at the same time 7 days (168 consecutive hours) later or whenever the task is declared as completed prior to time running out, or whenever the participant should happen to pass out and/or expire. 3) All visible areas must be painted, and all paint must be applied with a regulation brush. Putting a blindfold on oneself in an attempt to bypass this rule will not work. 4) Boiling to correct warpage and scrubbing the model to remove casting residue are the only prep tasks allowed prior to the timer being started. Removing mold lines, greenstuffing or otherwise altering the original sculpt in any way beyond factory spec is prohibited and way not cool, man. 5) All pieces as included in the box set at retail must be painted. This means no pretending that you aesthetically prefer a 4 headed dragon and thus cut off one of the heads to avoid painting it. 6) Each participant must declare in their thread title that it is an attempt at completing a 7 day challenge so that the organizer can make note of the participant's valiant effort and the rest of the community can watch the fascinating downward spiral into insanity. 7) After declaration of completion, the participant will have 2 hours to submit their official entry photos in the Official Entries thread. Up to 5 pictures per entry may be submitted. Failure to submit photos within the given 2 hour period may result in a sudden onset of spontaneous human combustion. It is not appropriate to include pictures of oneself in the official entries thread, not only would that be strange, but everyone knows that cameras steal your soul. 8) Failure to complete the Goblin Challenge in the allotted time may result in the participant becoming a goblin themselves, although in rare cases, the participant may have the option of completing a labyrinth in 13 hours to avoid this penalty. The inclusion of a singing referee in too-tight pants in this additional penalty round is, unfortunately, no longer an option. The participant waves all responsibility of the challenge organizer should they fail and thus become a goblin, or should they lose their head or other various body parts, become trapped in an oubliette forever, or find themselves plagued by an eternal stench. I will be starting approximately 8 hours from now, or whenever I manage to get home from work. Oh and by the way, I haven't been able to get myself to paint very much for the past few months. Hell of a way to force oneself back into painting, isn't it?
  16. I have decided to do this as my first attempt at one of the goblin challenges. This is also my first time doing a WIP thread. I am hoping I can get Ma'al drakar done around work, though I do have a three day weekend which should help. My starting time. Off to sling some paint. Official Rules:
  17. Actually, I'm starting this tomorrow. I'm starting the thread now so that @buglips*the*goblin has a chance to check in and add my name to the list of bat-crap crazy whackjobs taking this on. And, you know. Pelt somebody with a stanky shoe, 'cause why not. As this is a Goblin Challenge, it will follow the Challenge Rules, as stated in this thread: I am .. not sure I know WTF I'm doing, but whatever, I'm a girlblin, I'm not known for sanity, and I pelt people with chili-bombs. So. Maal's been washed and dry-fitted, and I've said a lot of bad words about all the ratzenfraggin' holes in the wings and ... done exactly nothing about any of it, because I'm not breaking out the knife and greenstuff until tomorrow. But! The PLAN, if plan there can be said to be had, is that tomorrow, day one, will be mostly line-trimming, gap-filling and wing-patching, and possibly linering the base. After that, painting will proceed apace; and here's a picture of Maal'dryfitted to prove I have all the pieces, and amuse everybody. I couldn't find Sir Forscale, so I used a quarter. Let the commentating begin! ... don't get nuts, I'd like to be able to start this tomorrow and only be on page one or two. ;p
  18. While I have jumped the gun for the official contest, I am jumping into the insanity pool and attempting to paint Ma'al Drakar in 7 days per Buglips' rules. I'm adding a level of difficulty by painting it at my FLGS and I'm live streaming while I do it. Because of that time constraint, I'm actually already one day in.... Gotta paint when the store is open. ... You can follow along over at https://www.twitch.tv/diceaddiction If you missed the stream or want to watch the past streams, they are under the videos tab. We'll be posting these to Facebook as well. The schedule should be: Thursday July 20th 1pm - 11pm (maybe midnight) Friday July 21st 1pm - 10pm Saturday July 22nd 1-pm - 6pm May stream again from 9pm on... Sunday July 23rd 1pm - 10pm Monday July 24rd 1pm -10 pm Tuesday July 25th 7pm For wrap up only I've got to go back to work so there may be no video at all. If there are more times or the times change, I'll post here. 19. My copy of Ma'al Drakar has a bum left leg and I'm looking for another. Is there a chance in the heavens I can order just a leg or is it gonna be a whole new model? The old leg is beyond repair.
