Here's a couple of sea folk I painted in June, both for Reaper Challenge League. World Oceans Day was June 8th, and the mer-man my seasonal entry. Enjoy.

The coral is actually transparent, and what's more has holes drilled up to it in the bottom. She's light-ready... but I don't have the inclination to fiddle around and make a miniature light-up system yet. If I did, it'd probably be an inductively powered LED. I like the sword myself. The photos kind of show it, but under the light it flickers between blue and bronze. Interference paints ftw.

Here is another 3D printed mini. She's from Artisan Guild from the Death Tide Jurakin Set. This is the pin up - Telxia Tidal Beauty. She's a mermaid so she's partially nude hence the links. So I had this mini for some time, it was damaged, missing an arm and a hand. I repaired it using some bits and repainted it. Here's the WIP topic. I like how everything turned out, thanks for looking! Some before and after photos:

This is the mermaid from the old Grenadier boxed set #6004, "Monsters of Mythology" from their Fantasy Lords range. I used to have the set, once upon a time. This was one of my favorite figures from it (though I painted it very differently back in the day and I am pretty sure my memories of how well I painted it are seriously rose-tinted). There isn't a WIP thread. And because I do like to play around with photographic backgrounds and water effects:

Spotted this at Adepticon and found the idea of a steampunk mermaid too fun to pass up. She is exquisitely sculpted with elegant little hands and careful details. I think I would like to paint her a little like a tropical fish, bright yellow with orange stripes. This is my basic figure priming: Removal of mold lines (not too many of those), epoxied to the base, primed thinly with Titanium White and washed with Burnt Umber. I then started building up thin layers of Yellow Ochre (aka Mars Yellow aka Yellow Iron Oxide), a nearly-opaque earth yellow, normally a little dull in color but brighter in thin layers, lightened in places with Titanium White, and a few Titanium White highlights. I used Raw Sienna, a very slightly browner yellow, on the base.

Hello! I'm starting a new project, an underwater adventuring party. I've ordered a group of miniatures for it: I've been mostly painting Games Workshop stuff for the last few years, so I'm hoping this will be a nice change of pace.

I painted this one for my oldest stepdaughter, she's into synchronized swimming has like 23 swim certificates and I believe she's secretly part fish. Also she's a bit of a scrooge sometimes, so I added a Rustik Market's piece of resin treasure. Made the rock from Milliput. I was inspired by the recent arrival of my Krackatoans from their IndieGoGo campaign. This is the new Bones II version of Bob Ridolfi's Mab Grindylow, recently released in the store. There is a WIP thread here.

I've started working on a batch of figures for aquatic adventures, including the new Bones II version of Mab Grindylow, 92695. Here she is primed with Reaper's Brown Liner. She had a tendency to topple over backwards, so I epoxied her to a one-inch fender washer, tilted slightly forward. I started with the sand on her base, first laying down a few coats of thinned-down Iron Oxide Yellow (= Reaper's Palomino Gold). Then I washed over that with a more nuanced mixed sand color involving Titanium White, Iron Oxide Yellow, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, and a touch of Phthalo Green. I mixed a subdued blue from Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna and painted her eel tail with it, highlighting it with pure Titanium White while it was still wet.

Another one of my recent quick-and-dirty conversions, and a quick-and-dirty paint job on it... I wasn't bothering to shoot for anything more than tabletop quality on this, as it was all about the conversion. The Bones Mariel Twinspar mounted on the bottom half of 77037 the Bones Medusa, with a fish tail sculpted on the end. Most of the detail on the tail is actually painted on rather than sculpted. My second mini for the month of Feb. For obvious reasons I'm naming her Cap'n Morganna...lol

She looked and felt kind of unbalanced beforehand. Gloss is a result of future floor polish. I didn't prime the mini, so flecks kept chipping off her hair and fins. Things left to do: Paint the sword blade (waiting on some interference paint), dull down and reshade the hair, base on something. Critique, comments greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone! After publishing a post about my first mini here, I listened to your precious advice and started gearing up for a new mini: the Mermaid (03554). It took me so long from the first mini to this one because I tried a few things on it... I first added a little starfish on the rock beside the crab, just because. And I felt her mermaid tail was a little boring, so I added little fins on it! Took me ages to manage to stick those tiny things on there, and it was my first time with green stuff. Yeah, lots of first times on this mini! Later I added some sand behind the rocks to give them more texture. And here is the finished product! More pictures of the primed and finished mini on this page, but WARNING!! She's a topless mermaid, you will see nudity! I played around with UV gel (yeah, for nails) and a nail polish top coat to add some real gloss to the water and fins, and I used matte on the rocks and a bit on the parts of her body that would have "dried" while she posed like that. I really tried to add depth and shine to this mini (compared to the other), so I used washes this time along with the dry-brushing method. Thanks to all of you who gave me tips! I used my brand new size 3/0, size 0 and size 2 Series 33 Pure Kolinsky Pointed paintbrushes for this one and I loooove them! :D Next mini: a simple dire boar, to take a rest from this adventure... Feel free to leave your comments/encouragements/tips, because it really helped me improve last time!

Designed by Larry Elmore, sculpted by Jeff Grace. I spotted it in a game store and thought it was way more interesting than the pure eye candy mermaids. I was concerned about the flimsiness of the join between arms and arm sockets, so I pinned them. With very. Tiny. Wires. The arms were mighty thin to begin with. I may have left the pinning wires a bit long, making her upper arms a bit long. I deliberately didn't give her pupils. I wanted her to have preternatural, milky nonhuman eyes. I figured mermaids would not have easy access to metal, so I painted her armor and weapon as if they were made of coral, ivory, and bone. In the fourth picture for some reason the colors came out very bright, but the other pictures are more true to life.

This was a figure that an artist friend wanted me to paint & mount for him. So we did a trade out...I did the figure for him and he did some adventure persona drawings of my adventure group characters. He requested the "gloss" finish!
