  1. Please see the main post here for rules, questions and general chatter, while using this thread to keep a list of links to your show-offs or show-off related comments in a single post: A reminder to please adhere to miniatures posting guidelines as usual. http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/72577-resolutionary-painting-challenge-2017-chatterquestions/ All the information you need should be here. Due to the revised format, there will be more than one bonus challenge available for this month. Including a "Hard mode" which Is some combination that may or may not have a source behind it. March and April 2017 Your challenge is: 9! Bonus Challenge: The First! Given that (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) spring starts in this time frame - Modify (if necesseary) and Paint a figure (doesn't matter what) in a jumping/springing pose Bonus Challenge: The Second! April 22nd is National Jelly bean day. Paint a mini in tribute to your favorite flavor jellybean (bonus* points if you choose tutti fruttti) *The game is made up and the points don't matter. Hard Mode Challenge! "Disrupted" Light source (from any direction but above.) Paint any mini you choose in any scheme you choose, but the lighting must come from the sides or below, as if it was filtering through some other opaque object to disrupt the lighting. Ex: The character is standing close to a chainlink fence, so it casts a 'shadow grid' on them, or perhaps through an old window with thick beams so the there's a large + shaped shadow being cast on them. Again please refer questions to the main thread. Not like there's ANY chance for something on April 1st...
  2. Howdy all! I'm going to start a Mouse Guard group for kids (around 5 to 7-ish years old) soon. I have the mouseling minis for the mice themselves, but I need minis for a wide variety of NPCs and enemies. This is the tentative list I've come up with, based on the core book and the size chart that I attached. I'd like to stay within Bones, but I'm totally okay with spreading out into different Reaper brands. If you folks have any suggestions, it would be much appreciated. I'm mostly looking for miniatures that fit the size categories and look similar to the creature intended (i.e., the Dragon Tortoise for a snapping turtle). If the animal has (Int) in front of this, it has its own society in the world of Mouse Guard, and thus would be wearing clothes, wielding weapons, etc. Thanks for the help! (Colossal-Gargantuan) Bear--Schleich Grizzly Bear 14685 Moose--Shleich Bull Moose 14781 (Huge) Wolf--Schleich Wolf 14741 Wolverine--Schleich Wolverine 14646 Deer--Schleich White-tailed Buck 14709 (Large-Huge) Coyote--77202: Warg (Int) Otter/Sable--Harrek - Otter Cleric - DSM8083 and Otter Knight with Sword and Shield - DSM8087 and Otter Ranger with Bow DSM8089 and Otter Rogue with Loot - DSM8088 and Otter Mage with Staff - DSM8090 and FL13 Otter Mercenary and FL11 Otter Rogue (Large) Fox--77202: Warg Badger--Safari Ltd. 3. We just launched our Kickstarter for a brand new Ultra Clear Variant of the Xcase, Expandable Transport and Display. Now the XCase not only can transport your figures but it can show them off as well as many much less versatile options. Check it out. <iframe src="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/activemindsgames/xcase-ultra-clear-expandable-miniatures-display-ca/widget/card.html?v=2" width="220" height="420" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe>
  4. It really should be shelves and trays and boxes and cases and drawers and cupboards... As I try to get my painting room organized I keep being frustrated by where to put all these assortments of random partially painted, primed, and unprimed but assembled loose figures that I have in every conceivable container. So I decided I should really try to finish some up. They will be a good change of pace or when I'm tired of whatever I'm working on, or good motivation when I'm having trouble getting going (that's why I grabbed some today). Now some of these are big enough groupings that they will get their own threads, like all the Clan War stuff, the entire VOID Syntha army, the Chronopia stuff, etc but the misc bits and bobs will end up here. Starting out we have: I "think" the ballistae and catapult (onager?) were from megaminis. The multi-barrel cannon I picked up at the game store back close to 2 decades ago and have no idea who made it. I haven't done anything to the cannon yet except dust it a bit. The catapult was started, I just finished the wood to match. One ballista had the wood done, I did the other two to match. The "paint" used is the old Reaper Pro Paint Wood Shade Ink. Painting it over straight white primer gives that result. That's how I did wood back in the day..... Not sure what I'd use to highlight it....
  5. Including a “Hard mode†which Is some combination that may or may not have a source behind it. January and February 2017 Your challenge is: 8! Bonus Challenge – The First! In honor of having a Friday the 13th, Paint a mini up in your best rendition of a classic horror creature. It does not have to resemble the actual creature/character in physique, just paint job. Bonus Challenge – The Second! A return of our challenge from last year: Fingerpainting! That is, except for priming and sealing, using no other paint applicator besides fingers. And no – enlisting the help of a smaller friend/family member/minion does not qualify. WITH an adjustment this time: It must be a creature of some form or another – no easy ways out with chests/crates/etc. Hard Mode Challenge! Monochrome Microbust: This is easiest with a bones figure for obvious reasons. Take a mini and cut off part of the body so that it resembles an otherwise normal miniatures bust. For purposes of this challenge, the figure must be no larger than a ‘medium’ creature (but should be at least vaguely humanoid) and “Bust†will be defined as – arms no longer than just above the elbow, and chest no further down than the navel. The exception is if the hair goes further down, you may preserve the hair but the rest of the body must still be gone. Monochrome may denote any singular color you want (even grayscale) but you may only use black and white to change the color of the base one chosen. – Please reserve any questions on this challenge for the chatter thread. PLOT TWIST! Hidden challenge: Fancy Date Night Makeover: Paint up a miniature that's wearing normal medieval or sci-fi armor/clothing into a fancy tux/suit/dress appropriate for date night. Minis that are already wearing appropriate date night attire don't count. (Think kind of like those tuxedo tshirts or similar - full plate armor with a suit and tie painted on it or so.)
  6. This Kickstarter is to get the rules and other non-miniature components of Broken Contract into physical print form, with new miniatures as stretch goals. I backed the 1st Kickstarter for the miniatures and they are excellent sculpts and casts, they are also in the add-on section as well as the 2 player starter set pledge, which also contains the 5 KSE minis from the 1st Kickstarter. 7. I finally broke down and bought a 3d printer to play with. After a lot of reviews and investigation, and a long wait time, I finally found myself with a Prusa Mk2 from Prusa's company in Cz republic. the machine came fully assembled and even the very first print was pretty. (a very cute little treefrog) I have since printed a bunch more frogs and Adelaine the dragon (who thinks she's a wolf howling at the moon). and a lot of roadway prints from Fat dragons latest kickstarter As I said the prints are really nice even at the fastest speeds (which are not fast but such is the life of 3d printers.) a 4 inch square road section takes about 2 hours to produce and the machine will handle up to 4 sections at a time on the available bed space. I am including this here so I don't forget and I will put pictures up when I get done with work. My only previous experience with a printer has been a small m3D which was much more finicky and had a real problem with size limitations and I guess I expected the worst, but this has done a great job
  8. Awesome news! I recently had an idea that using miniatures and terrain pieces in the classroom setting would be way more effective than the simple PowerPoint projections of maps that I've used multiple times (I teach world history). However, to make it more useful, I decided that having everything magnetically-based would be better as it can be a vertical or horizontal learning tool. Well, my district (Colorado Springs district 11) recently sent around a notification that they had grant money available, so I pitched my idea as "Tactile Tactics." This morning, I was informed that they've accepted my grant request! I'll be using cookie sheets with maps magnetically held in place and minis with magnets in their bases. I'll be able to have my kiddos place the Axis and Allied forces in the correct countries. We'll be able to see in 3D what the phalanx formation looks like. We'll be able to see how the mountains of Greece made each polis unique. It's going to be AWESOME! As I continue working on pieces for it, I'll be posting images here. I've already ordered the Persian infantrymen from Wargames Factory on the bay! I'm also thinking I may have some of my more artistically-inclined students join in on helping to paint some of the pieces for it. If anyone's already got some experience with minis and magnets or how to effectively use minis in a vertical format, feel free to share your wisdom :=)
  9. My wife has said she would like to get into miniature painting, but her tastes are neither Fantasy or Sci-Fi. She is really into Disney characters. Does anyone have a suggestion as to where to find Disney miniatures that we can paint? A few searches for "Disney Pewter Miniatures" and variations of it, lead to figures in the $50 to $150 price range.... OUCH... While links aren't allowed in the posts, please message me with them, as my Goggle Fu is rather lacking... Thanks!
  10. Hello all! I am a very novice beginner to miniature painting, and have only been doing it for about a year or so. I feel like my skills are leveling up pretty quickly, but still need some advice. My friend is trying to coax me into pen and paper RPGs like DnD and pathfinder, and we are currently doing a pathfinder session. To add flavor to the games and because I like to feel like I'm participating, I'm working on terrain and buildings. The first building that I'm nearing completion on is Tabletop World's Mansion. Because of the large size of the model (and the hope that I'll be getting more pieces, creating a city that will look like it all came from the same forest/quarry/paint shoppe) I went to various Hardware stores and bought actual high quality building/house paint. I'm a little concerned this was a bad move, since I know model paint is specifically made for small scales. The colors for the mansion were ripped from the Winchester Mystery House photos because I love the design and colors. So the main question I have is regarding sealing. I've heard krylon matte spray can leave a sticky residue, and I want to avoid that. I was wondering what sealing spray I should use since I went with actual house paints. Because the parts where the house fits together are extremely snug, my desire is to paint on a gloss coat for the connecting parts, so when the mansion is put together/pulled apart the gloss coat will protect the paint better from rubbing off. Or will it stick together because of the gloss coat? Looking for advice on that. Finally, the wood flooring I would like to look a little more aged. I'm kind of worried about adding grey or white with dry brushing but will probably end up doing that. The wood color was a brown paint I had mixed up at the hardware store, so I figured I would brush some burnt umber over it and then go with some kind of gray and then white for the aged look. This is almost finished, I'm very much a "good enough" worker and hobbyist, and so long as it looks decent on the table I'll be happy. I could certainly obsess over the tiny details for the next 10 years, but I like my sanity. Looking for some advice on the sealing/aging wood though! Thank you for reading my post. Sorry about the length.
  11. The kickstarter is now live and will feature not only classic Hollywood inspired monsters and celebrity survivors but also familiar characters inspired from vintage television shows. And also zombies. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/687110463/hollywood-havoc-28mm-zombie-survivor-and-monster-m/description Below are a couple of sneak peeks from their Facebook page: This is the same company who has done the wonderful Not-Monty Python & The Holy Grail minis as well as some very nice Not- The Walking Dead TV show minis.
  12. Good news for Doctor Who fans. http://doctorwhominiaturesgame.com Warlord Games is absolutely delighted to have secured the licence to produce a miniatures game based on the BBC's enormously popular TV series, Doctor Who (back on BBC One on September 19th!). So delighted we might just have a celebratory jelly baby. As lifelong Doctor Who fans ourselves, we are extremely pleased to have the chance to bring this iconic series to the tabletop with a game system you all know and love as well as the official range of miniatures to complement it. The licence covers not just the latest series of Doctor Who but encompasses all of the Doctors, their companions and their foes. So, expect to see Sea Devils as much as Weeping Angels, Leela as much as Martha Jones, and a long, brightly coloured scarf as much as a fez (fezzes are cool, by the way...).

  14. I started to put this in the acquisitions thread. But then I didn't. At some point I purchased all the minis that will be involved. But not at all recently. The story: I was in my garage. I was shifting some boxes and moving stuff. In the middle of this I spotted a box labeled "TRAVELLER" on its end, written in blue marks-A-lot. I think, "What? No... Why are any of my old Traveller books out here? The garage is no place for books I don't want ruined!" So I investigate. Of course it was the bottom-most box. And this... ...is what I found. The old Peter Pan peanut butter jar goes to the recycle bin. The rest is to be investigated and unboxed. This thread will be dedicated to the... Lost But Now Found ...minis forgotten, buried, and rediscovered. This is meant to be a shared thread. Everyone else is welcome to post their joyful finds, archaeological digs, recovered artifacts, & ancient acquisitions that may come to light. I have a white plastic bag to un-knot... (bottom right in picture).
  15. A Reaper Galdanoth, Elf Sniper (14481) Must admit, I really like this figure and enjoyed painting it. All feedback and criticism welcome. As always, click for a larger view.

Your challenge is: 4 - IF you did a fools guild miniatures, the challenge becomes 3 for this month as stated in March Bonus Challenge: Backwards: In honor of how absurdly stupid and backwards the weather has been lately - paint a miniature using your offhand only. You can still use your main hand to hold it and such, but all application of paint to miniature must be done with your non-dominant hand. Extra Bonus Challenge: The first modern olympics since ancient times were held in Athens, Greece, 1896. Bonus Challenge 2 is: Make all figures for the month into a diorama honoring the competition, ceremony or competition (winter or summer olympiad, your call)

Your challenge is: 5 Bonus Challenge: The Fools' Guild. This bonus challenge is a LITTLE strange for most. Yes it's a bonus theme, but, if you do this, I'll let it count for 1 each March AND April regardless of size. Please tag it as "Foolsguild" when you post it so I can find it easier as well. The idea here to paint a mini of any genre that has an absolutely, positively, horribly stupid banner/color scheme/etc for what they're doing. Say you have the pulp ninja - paint him tye-die. Or maybe It's a townsfolk like the barkeep whose apron says "Try the burritos" (which we ALL know is a trap.) And a personal favorite of mine: "Order of the Eye" the tabard insignia is a bullseye. HOWEVER - I'm also challenging you to write a story on -why- they belong to the Fools' Guild. I'll personally be going with the Order of the Eye....yeah It's pretty stupid to have your front and back emblazoned with a bullseye. But I'll make a story for it. I don't normally make extra requirements for the mini like a story, but that's part of the 1 per month count. Even better if we can drop them all in the show-off on April First. A friendly reminder again to use "RPChallenge" in the tags for show-off to help them be found easier. Feather me yon oaf! Ale Cuisine! You kids have fun! I look forward to seeing what y'all think of for this one. Go nuts y'all.
  18. My last one was REALLY pink. This one is a little more realistic..

This next generation tabletop game utilises the recent advances in mobile technology to bring a more realistic, faster paced, and deeper gaming experience to the already mature tabletop wargaming genre."* "With the Kickstarter campaign we will produce a line of high quality resin cast 28mm scale miniatures. 24. So I landed a pretty good deal not all that long ago. I teach special ed, specializing in behavior theory and behaviorism, and my main area of expertise is in emotionally disturbed and behavior disordered children. I have considerable experience in the field, and this one school snapped me up when I put in. And I've been working ever since to earn it. There is a child. For legal reasons, I'll call him Alpha. Alpha's a bit of an emotional mess, due to the influence of caregivers no longer in the picture who ain't worth what you scrape off your shoes after a hike through the pasture. Alpha's capable of doing grade level work, but has self-confidence issues that I had to figure out how to address. He needed more than just confidence building exercises out of a book. ...so a while back, when weather required an indoor recess... I taught him miniatures. I had a bunch of HeroClix handy. I use them for parts and conversions and such; haven't played in years, but I still had the parts and rules and stuff handy. It SEEMED like a no brainer. What elementary school kid doesn't like superheroes? What kid wouldn't want to BE a superhero? So I showed him the minis that one particular day, and we played a short game. The old rules, before they got all complicated, are easy enough, and he took to it. I learned something: he was willing enough to get stuck in, but whenever he took damage, he'd flee to the furthest corner of the map and do his damndest to stay out of range. Teleport and Stealth were his powers of choice -- that, and ranged attacks. HeroClix actually helped with the kid's diagnosis: he wanted to be a superhero, sure... but he automatically assumed that in a sustained battle, he'd lose. Hit and run was his preferred tactic, regardless of what superhero he chose to play. He was literally playing the game the same way he lived his life: avoidant behavior strategy, because confrontation led to pain and loss. You can't win against the Big People, and at best, you hide and hope to be ignored... ...so one day, I set up a map, and played "booster draft" style: random figures and matching point values. And I cheated, of course. I got 200 points worth of ninjas, which made him frightened. ... until he opened his own box. ONE figure. The Incredible Hulk, the version from the Avengers movie, possibly the most powerful Hulk the game ever produced. This led to a bizarre opening game, in which the Hulk frantically tried to escape from the ninja horde... and was finally cornered. In desperation, he smacked a ninja. Ninjas only have three or four clicks of life, and the ninja promptly died. This did not slow the horde, and they swarmed the poor Hulk... and one drew his sword and slashed the green monster. "Roll vs. Impervious," I said. Alpha rolled a six. "No damage," I said. "What? NO damage?" "Impervious means that if you roll a five or a six, you take NO damage, regardless of how much he dished out," I replied. "On a 1-4, you take damage, but not the first two clicks. 'Cause you so tough." His face lit up. He immediately got serious, and began to study the map. Coincidentally, all the ninjas had a token, and they all chose to pass the following turn, rather than push and take damage. Alpha asked, "How many clicks does the sword ninja have? Can I kill him in one swat?" "No clicking the figures in play," I replied loftily. "You'll have to try it and see." I couldn't have planned it better. He rolled boxcars, which not only did an extra click of damage, but the knockback knocked the ninja into a tree, which did yet another click. "Oh, dear, he's ninja pudding now," I said. Alpha actually laughed. He doesn't do that often. For the rest of the game, Alpha did not run. The next few turns played out like a game of Whack-A-Mole, until he realized he could pick things up and swat ninjas with them, or THROW them at ninjas... and even when they connected with him, they did little damage, if any. The Foot Clan suffered a grave defeat that day. That was a while back. Alpha doesn't melt down as often... his emotional incident charts are WAY down. His academics are up. And he's more willing to try new things. And in the game... he doesn't tend to run away as much. He's willing to stand up for himself... and out of game, his other teachers and therapists have noted that he'll speak up when something isn't right, instead of simply hunkering down or shutting down. I can't take all the credit for this; I'm not his therapist, or his only teacher. But his therapist has asked if I can spare any HeroClix... A game of Taco Football in progress. At center, the Hulk battles the Amazing Mr. M for control of the Taco Truck, which can bring victory if you take it to your starting area. Mr. M is taking a beating, while a Paramedic heals the Hulk. At foreground, a Mandroid rushes to engage the enemy, while in the background, the Black Panther merrily drives the taco truck to victory... a game takes about twenty minutes, and is ostensibly a reward for good behavior or academic achievement. In practice, it's much more than that, and my department has begun to realize that... my initial evaluation for the year is looking VERY shiny. Hee, hee.
