I'm working on a Greek Myth army using the a Greek Legends expansion from Bones V. These minotaurs are actually earlier models but all Reaper Bones. I'm then working on some new rangers for Rangers of Shadow Deep, and I've painted up Derrell, Liara, and some other characters I like the look of. One step I took, which I'm pleased with, is to not base the human size models on rounds and then use modelling paste to disguise their bases. They've got very nice oval bases and I can make it work in the games I'll be playing with them.

Last year was my best painting year since 2013! I averaged one per week. Despite the enthusiasm with a brush, I have been less engaged with the community than ever. I paint 'em, and then they go to a cabinet never to be seen by another person. Naturally a good number of the pieces I have completed over the year are reaper miniatures, so I'm happy to share a selection of things I have done here. The undead are fun to knock out, and this Minotaur was no exception. They are so forgiving to rough paintwork that they are especially relaxing for brief sessions. Nothing fancy here, but I like it. The weapons on the base come from the reaper sprue from a prior KS.

It's the weekend and you know what time it is! Got a terrifying little foursome going here this time. Attempted a few new things that have been given to me as feedback over the last few weeks, so thought it was a good time to put them to use. BATTLE REPORT! Wins: * Sticking to a simple color scheme for the skin - trying to only use two tones and building up the colors. Win - kind of. More on that to come. * Making the chest area stand out from the rest of the skin I thank made for a fun touch. Layering was done well, but learned a lot in doing it that next time could be easier. * Eyes. HOLY SMOKES! I'm so happy with the eyes. I did a blacked out eye area, filled in the round white, then used a black to dot in the center. Was a shaking mess doing it? You bet I was, but the outcome was worth it. Each of them have eyes I'm very happy with. * 2 of them have a burnt umber ink wash 4:1 flow improver to DR Ink. The wash went on well and settled into the seems, but I think there's still something I'm missing. Had to go back with another coat and hit just the cracks for deeper color. The other 2 were done with a diluted MSP Brown Liner. The Brown Liner was the better of the two to really draw out the shadows, but still something to be desired. However, both of these methods worked better than a GW wash that usually just dirties them up. * Horns were pretty good prior to the wash I gave them in a transition from dark rust to a bone white. I thought the ridges needed more depth so I washed it with that brown liner. They dont' look bad, but they don't look as good as I hoped. The win was learning this brown liner wash. Misses: * I tried washing over the leather colored kilt with a black wash. Big miss! Messy, wrong tone, and ruined it. Had to do it again. * Tried a red color for the waist cloth (same red you see on the eye-patched minitaur on his wrist bands) and it was too similar in color. I was aiming for brighter colors to break up the model. I don't think it worked. Did it over again with MSP Leather. * I hate the fabrics on their kilts. None of them came out as I hoped. Only one with decent turn out was the eye-patched guy with his kilt-o-faces. * Washes ended up heavy and very, very, very glossy. So glossy in fact, I couldn't even tell if they were dry or just glossy. Using flow improver on top of an ink is basically like making it glass. Good to know, but not desired look. * The swords and metal overall wasn't ideal. Kind of dark for what I wanted. I chickened out on the NMM. Again. I'm happy to have these little guys done and don't think they are bad. Just think they could have been better. Getting to understand the washes, glossiness, what matte cote will do it after, and the eyes - oh those eyes, this was all a project worth doing even if it wasn't my ideal turnout. Here they are. Okay, I couldn't really resist the silly title that had a touch of alliteration... Guess it's a thing for me or something. Anyways, I figured I'd want to do up a long-term WIP thread featuring a themed army that has the goal of being made mostly of Reaper miniatures... That and hey, I like gnolls and minotaurs, so... Why no! Not quite certain what the precise theme is just yet, but we'll roll with "spots and stripes are awesome, as is a love for axes and mythology in general" as the starter of it all. Initially, this army will be made mostly (if not all) with Bones figures, but eventually metal minis will find their way in. Bones are rather convenient with their pricing, and there is a wide selection on offer! It's also something to paint other than my various Games Workshop armies (Tau, Catachans, a scattered amount of Space Marines, a few Tyranids (for now), Skaven, as well as (fantasy) Orcs, although I have nowhere near as many greenskins), and my main focus is purely on fun, with fluff to come as things go. That and I very much so plan on spending a good amount of time on each mini, not just for detail, but to improve my own skills in general. One could potentially argue that I intend on making these guys more of my "showpieces", which is something I don't mind the thought of at all I like how @Glitterwolf formats their posts, so... I'm thiefing parts of it, as it's a nice formatting, and of course provides a reasonable amount of detail for it all, so why not Pictures were taken with my mobile phone (Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge) because at the time I didn't quite feel like messing around with my G85 - or something to that effect ~_^ First and foremost, we have double trouble with a handsome hunk, I mean a minotaur who means business! 77012 Gnoll Warrior, 77013 Minotaur, and 77236 Bloodmane. White bones doesn't quite look appropriate in my eyes as it's "naked", so let's fix that... ^Both gnolls now have primer on them... And of course the couple of mold lines I missed are blatantly visible... Not that I mind, it's always nice to find them NOW other than a few hours into things... I'm planning on going somewhat darker for their fur, hence why the medium-ish grey priming job. Paint used: 09108 Brush-on Primer 09065 Grey Liner Two parts primer, three parts grey liner, one drop of water to improve flow. ^Not to be outdone, our fearless minotaur jumps into the fray as well, although somewhat lighter than the gnolls. Something about how a fox is thinking about going with a more "traditional" medium brown. Would have used brown liner, but, uhm, don't have that, so grey liner it is. Paint used: 09108 Brush-on Primer 09065 Grey Liner Three parts primer, two parts grey liner, one drop of water to improve flow. ^And since I just had to have him on my last order, here we have most of what I'll call our first leader, or even general of it all, 77376 Minotaur Demon Lord, partially test-fit. I ran out of time to get the mold lines on the other six parts, but I'll be working on that today. Goal is to have him assembled today, and quite possibly primered as well. I'm not quite certain as to precisely what colour I'll be going with on him, but for some reason an almost "aflame" reddish-coppery-orange with hints of brown in it come to mind.

Hello to all you bovine aficionados! So a while back ago I did a normal minotaur, Greek-type mythological beast with an axe on two legs. This one is a little different, it's a Shadowrun Minotaur which has a bull's body and a "primate" face. I think Jim Johnson sculpted it back in the nineties, as usual forgot to check for a date on the bottom. Pretty straight forwards colors, and it's actually kind of a big and heavy model. Put him on an oval base because there was no way he was going to fit on a normal size circle one: Anyhoos, hope you guys all enjoy him!

So I think this Minotaur may have been originally sculpted by Julie Guthrie, but likewise it might have been Dennis Mize because it's part of those Ral Partha resculpts that were won't with some of the Citadel miniatures back then. Anyhoos, fun figure, and didn't take too long to paint. It's my first minotaur, I must admit! Anyhows, enjoy!

Once again my buddy with the minotaur character fixation asked me to find a minotaur for him that I can convert into a monk. Given that most are armed and armored ... I understood his dilemma. Thrym's Table presents: Spellcrow Minotaur as Minotaur Monk Original marketing image; copyright Spellcrow Miniatures. The first things that had to go were the axes. The hands were attached to axes on a separate sprue and made it easy to remove them. Next I drilled out the old handle and cleaned up the pins to the wrists. Fairly easy so far. I did it during game night while playing Talisman. I was the Sprite. Next I pared back the horns to create a pin and to create a better profile. The stock horns seemed a bit out of proportion to him. When I got home my original plan was to place pieces of mini cable ties to create a Karnak look for his fists. The cable tie I started with worked to a point but wouldn't lay flat enough to his hand. So time for idea #2, wire. As you can see, Karnak has bands around his hands. That worked well. That gave me the idea for a necklace or medallion swinging away from him. Here he is... I finished this model right at the end of February, but I've been under the weather and it wasn't until today that I felt up to taking pictures. This was my first time chopping up the integral base of a bones mini and making a custom base and I'm very pleased with how it turned out. I realized upon photographing him that I forgot to properly paint the armband on his left arm so I'll have to go back and do that. I might also repaint the knife/cleaver as steel. I thought it would look cool as copper like some kind of ceremonial knife, but I think it's a bit too much. C&C welcome, thanks for looking!

So... in an effort to like....actually not have 300 minis to paint by the time Bones 4 AND the critical role minis all hit me next year, I’ve decided to paint three a week, and always have a bigger work in progress going. This week I picked some low hanging fruit so I actually did more than that. The ice troll was my bigger monster this week. Air elemental i wanted to look like it was sorta tearing up the earth beneath ala a tornado.... enjoy! C&C welcome!

My most recently complete project is the lovely ladies of Oathsworn Miniature's "Heroines in Sensible Shoes 3" Kickstarter. As always, they are a joy to paint. They have nice, bold details but without being overwrought. They definitely look like a bunch of starting adventurers! The theme this time was more exotic races, notably a bunch from "Volo's Guide to Monsters" The ladies ascend the mountain: The Kitsune. She could be a lightly armored Fighter, a Rogue, or a Ranger. The Kenku (or Tengu) Shaman. Or Wizard. Or Sorcerer. Or whatever. She's got a bone to pick with you! The Kenku or Tengu Rogue. I went with oranges for them to continue my previous work on the Bones Tengu...which were also dressed in orange to match the official D&D pre-paints. The Dragonborn, could be a Fighter or Paladin. The decision to make her red was regrettable...with that pointy face and dreads, I kept thinking of Ugandan Warrior Knuckles. Stupid memes getting in the way! Tabaxi or Catfolk. I tried to go with more of a Ranger color scheme than the intended Rogue. The other Tabaxi/Catfolk from the set. I liked the intent of this sculpt...she could be a spellcaster, a Monk, or a Bard! The Halfling Knight. Her mount was painted after my own painting gremlin, Hershey. He would be much smaller to scale, though. The Tiefling Paladin. I really like the pose of this one, though I questioned the hooves, as 4E and 5E Tieflings of this design have human feet. I may wind up greenstuffing her into boots at some point. The Firbolg Druid. As far as I know, this is the only miniature of a 5E style Firbolg. The Minotaur Swashbuckler. I bet you were expecting a cow joke here. The terrain:

Teaser pic, as there's only five minis sculpted so far! I'll be sculpting at least 7 more throughout the project, taking input and suggestions from the backers... So far, there's a firbolg druid, tabaxi and kenku rogues, a minotaur barbarian, and a hobgoblin eldritch knight. After consulting with our previous backers, the the most popular suggestions are - another tabaxi, probably either a monk or wizard; a tiefling wizard, and a tiefling paladin or cleric; another kenku (probably a magic user of some sort); a dragonborn paladin; a tortle (no ideas on class or equipment yet!); and finally a human barbarian, heavy, powerful build, but not lean. I'm open to suggestions though, so if you have any, please let me know! cheers Michael

I recently got in the latest "Heroines in Sensible Shoes" Kickstarter from Oathsworn Miniatures. I decided to get started on them and take (yet another) break from my in progress Rising Sun minis. As \always, they were nice, clean casts with lots of detail, but nothing over-wrought...which makes sense for low-level adventurers! They're such a joy to paint.

Painted up this minotaur over the weekend for an upcoming adventure. I might go back and add some highlights in the future, but I've been pressed for time lately and have just been trying to churn figs out. His eyes are supposed to be plain white, he's a blind minotaur working for a Rakshasa that steals eyesight from unlucky adventurers. He'll be using those big weapons to chop veggies and prepare a meal for the Rakshasa, but if the party can't sneak through the kitchen they may end up on the menu. Critiques and advice welcome as always! Please note that I'm not even going to attempt making a base for this one. I'm not confident enough in my painting yet, and want to get that down before I move on the next step of building up those cool bases that I see all over these forums. Thanks in advance!

Ok, this isn't a New year's resolution ( I don't make those), but I have decided that I need to get over the "I'm not good enough" thing and try to push myself to paint all those figures that I've been saving for 'some day'. That day is NOW. I grabbed this figure during a Black Friday sale for something like 4 or 5 bucks. Depending on where you get it from, it's usually more like 30. It's 28mm scale, but it stands pretty tall; I'm guessing it's 54mm tall or thereabouts. I'll get a proper picture with Sir Forscale a little bit later on. I'd like you to help push me to do my absolute best with this guy, please. If you think something looks good, cool, tell me that. By the same token, if you think something doesn't look good, tell me that, too. I want you guys to 'break out the red pen' as Cyradis would say. For reference, this is the figure I'm talking about (picture from the WWW, not my figure).

These have been in my collection for a considerable time. I finally felt mooved to slap some paint on them.

I hadn't even realized when I began on these three that they were all from the "Castle Stoneskull" expansion from Bones III. It was a great set for adding to the random encounters for an RPG. These guys may represent some of the high-level dangers that one could encounter while dungeoneering in Castle Stoneskull! The Behir. I've been wanting one since a buddy pulled one from the first Huge set of D&D prepaints. They even show up in Pathfinder's "Reign of Winter" and D&D 5E's "Storm King's Thunder", if only I had had this guy in time for those campaigns! Brain-in-a-Jar. While I was hoping this would be a human brain, it's still a really cool design. I wonder why the legs are traditional bendy bones instead of the hard plastic that makes up the rest of the mini (minus the squishy brain), though. The mighty Minotaur! Bones has a lot of representations for Minotaurs now, almost as many as Orcs or Goblins. There's the one from pre-Kickstarter, 2 adventurers in Bones II, and the whole set of Minitaurs coming in Bones IV! Plus all the Beastmen if you want to count them, I've seen them used as medium Minotaur PCs enough times. This guy is my favorite, though. Must be the Gladiator armor.

Step 0 Penny ^ ...New model in blister. ^ This guy is big enough to take up the footprint of four infantry skeletons. The penny is 19mm diameter. The plan is to give the figure a 40mm square, equivalent to four 20x20 bases arranged in a square. He will count as four members of the unit he'll be assigned to.

On my birthday last week I spent the whole day playing PF and painting. I speed-painted this guy:

Introducing the newest demon lord in my miniatures collection... The Minotaur Demon Lord, aka Baphomet, aka "the Horned King", aka "the Prince of Beasts." This miniature was quite a bit bigger than the metal demon lord minis I've painted previously. A bit of a challenge, but I'm pleased with the result! So finally go done sorting out my box of bones 3 and decided to do the minotaur skelly to break the seal. I really the undying lords set. Such fun to paint and fairly easy for a newb like myself. As always would love to hear constructive criticism. AJ AJ

So, this Minotaur fellow has been staring at me in pieces for a while now. I've decided the time has come to get painting, and while I'm at it, make my first ever WIP post. Because in the words of the great Devo: "When a demon miniature comes along, you must WIP it!" End goal: mini to be used in my D&D campaign. He doesn't need to be display quality, but I'll still welcome your tips and suggestions to improve my work. So far I've just put down some brown liner and temporarily stuck it together to make sure everything is on track. Currently mixing up colours for the base coat... More soon! -E.E.
