I may end up doing a bunch of image dumps - I've painted a lot this year and maybe I should just post them in sets. This one, though, deserves its own post, I think. I painted up the Green Dragon Hatchling from waaaay back in Bones 2, showed it to my wife, and she made some suggestions - so here you have it painted up as a Swamp Dragon from the Discworld, as kept by Lady Sybil of Ankh-Morpork. I gave them a collar and name plate, and since they're a tame dragon, I gave them a few chew toys, including a Rolly Ball just like Rex of "Snake Discovery," as can be seen here: https://www.twitch.tv/snakediscovery Comments, criticisms, and suggestions welcome!

This is Reaper 80026, the Bones version of "Agatha Fox, Spy", sculpted by Andrew Rae. She is a modish young lady in a raincoat and knee boots, nonchalantly easing a gun out of the handbag behind her back. It looks like the original sculpt had a collar or necklace or something, but I didn't see it in the Bones version. WIP thread here. Comments and critiques are welcome, as always.

A DaughterOfCheese abandoned the painting of this model, so it ended up in the Simple Green for awhile and I decided that her beautiful dress would look better with tentacles protruding from beneath it. Beautiful, sickly devil-flesh striding across a hellscape while she peels back her hood to reveal sinister horns. And it does get cold in hell, so don't forget your scarf. Or anyway, that was the plan. It turns out that her color made her difficult to photograph. The tentacles are formed around unwound paperclips, which were easy to twist into the right shape, but the flesh I added (green stuff, some clay, etc) was difficult to get to the right proportion without making it fall off. I'm new to this whole "modding" thing, so I'd LOVE feedback on it. :-)

Hi Folks, In the old days of 2nd Edition, Ral Partha had the AD&D license and they did a lot of cool official figs (Ral Partha 11-xxx), most of which I acquired over the years. One that has been impossible to find and too much $$$ on EBay is the Molydeus. I will to make my own using the Bones Wolf Demon as a base; decided to use two snakes instead of one to take advantage of the existing armor. I bought a River Toob and took the viper and boa as the snakes. Here are the parts: and here is where things stand at the moment: Still have some detailing to do as well as get that axe into his hand. Makes me wish for some more polearms for modding though...

And here we have Skrag: the Barbarian Journalist. You will give him an exclusive interview! This is for a PC in a game I'm running. The player has been using a pre-painted plastic mini for ages, and it was time for a proper one. The PC is often the subject of Enlarge Person spells; hence the need for both a regular size base, and a larger one. These two resin bases were originally completely separate: the lower one came from Tabletop Art in Germany, the upper from Micro Art Studio in Poland. Between some work with an exacto knife and a dremel, the two fit together nicely. There was even space for magnets. I sculpted the hat out of greenstuff. The press pass is made of paper super-glued to blisterpack, then to the hat. I accidentally removed the lower half of his left foot when taking off his original base, and thus he is standing on top of a copy of his newspaper: the Urgir Herald (editor-in-chief: Muck Raker). Full details are available in the ridiculously-pic-heavy WIP thread.

Having putty on my fingers and being in a sculpting mood while waiting for my fire giant's shoes to harden, I looked around for something else to tinker with. I quickly dug out the Spirit of the Forest. I didn't want my forest spirit's head emerging from its chest, so I made an attempt to raise it up, though still well hunched over. I drilled holes in the shoulders and the base of the jaw, and connected the head with soft aluminum wire. Also I carved away some of the alignment peg of the original neck joint. I think it needs some further adjustment, but it's a start.

I need some advice from the Bones repositioners/modifiers out there. I currently have Cadirith (with another on the way) that I am planning on modifying in to an Arachnarok Spider for Age of Sigmar. I've already figured out how to make and attach the Howdah to carry the goblins. The question I have is the best way to reposition the legs. They come in 4 sets of two and and are basically either parallel to each other or overlapping. What would be the best way to get some separation between the legs? Boil and reposition? Cut and angle and glue? My concern with the boiling would be bending the tabs out of position so they wouldn't seat flush anymore. And for cutting, where? At the joint where the join the body or at one of the joints on the legs? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has trouble understanding my rambling train of thought, I can take some pictures if needed.

This is a pretty old fellow (you can see that the paint have flaked off some places due to tabletop use) that just got a new base. I never liked the "invisible man" look, so I once upon a time gave him limbs from a broken warhammer skeleton:

This is Dawg Hooger. The il begotten grandson of Maw Hooger in my Pathfinder game. I made him from a Gnoll Marauder and a Pugwampi and the greenstuffed his face a bit.

You know how I'm always asking for a deserty barbariany roguey elf wielding a spiked chain? This is what happens when you don't give it to me, sculptors and companies. I ruin your sculpts. In this case, Bobby Jackson's Irith, Deathseeker Hero. ~10 years ago, I created a character concept, a barbarian rogue assassin from a desert moon. Probably not that great an idea; whatever. I loved it. Didn't wind up getting to play him, but the name became my main Internet handle for a long time, and I always kept the concept in mind. This past winter I joined a game, decided he'd be a perfect fit, and made him anew. Bought a mini to mod to represent him at the table! But again didn't get to play him. Alas. But I had a mini for him this time. I'm not in love with the figure, but it seemed like a good one for converting. And it was close as I could get on the look. I guess. I'm pretty happy with how he turned out, honestly. I feel like I could've done a lot worse. I cut off the original's weapons. I used jewelry chain for the chain, a hacked-up jewelry bit bead thingy for the spike, and another jewelry bead thingy for the ball. Drilled out hands, wound up having to cut them, and closed them again over the chain. Pretty simple, pretty ghetto, but here we be. Right eye turned out better than the left, I thought. I had him finished a while ago, but I was waiting on a base. It's a desert base from Micro Arts Studio. Thought it fit the theme pretty well. Thanks for looking!

In the last Box o' Goodwill round, I had the opportunity to start a box. Since we had a number of Sir Forscales around already, we landed on Bobby Jackson's Hosilla for our group-paint project. My group members did all the work; I just added a little basing that hopefully isn't too obnoxious--I noticed in the photos the lighter color of the stuff I used didn't take the wash fully in a spot or two, especially along one edge. So it looks a bit bright. Sorry. I'll fix it later but decided to go ahead and post it since it since the painting's what's hot, here. It's some fine painting everyone did, too. Please to be enjoying the work of these folks, in mailing order: Fishnjeeps IzzyLobo Pingo Fanguad Arc724 Kadence Ironhammer I think these are the first pictures I've posted using the lightbox I made. Hopefully these do the group's fine painting at least a little bit of justice.

Here, for your amusement is my very first WIP thread. The plan here is to show 77162: Yephima, Female Cloud Giant having just put down a dwarf intruder. I figure she needs something to justify that smug look on her face. I plan to pose her with her victim (Stonehaven's Unconscious Dwarf SHD20) underneath that massive club of hers. In order to do this, I will need to cut her club away from the rest of the model. The leaves me with two surfaces (one on the club and one on the loincloth) with no detail. The loincloth surface isn't a big deal; I'll simply remove a small protrusion where the club attached, smooth it out and it will look like part of the garment. The club surface on the other hand will be a bit trickier since it's very detailed. After a bit of brainstorming with Minicannuck, I've come up with a solution. Using some Instamold, I created a mold of the good side of the club's head and made a replica using green stuff. This was my first attempt at using instamold and it didn't work out quite the way I'd hoped. It seems that the mold warped a bit while it cooled resulting in a fairly odd-looking club head. My second attempt worked out much better. This time, I left the club in the mold until it had completely cooled. As you can see, the replica on the left looks much better than the original (pictured again on the right) The next step will be to cut away part of the club head and replace it with part of the green stuff replica. More to come as progress is made. Comments and constructive criticism are always welcome.

Thrym's Mechbay :: Dire Wolf (Daishi) Battlemech
Thrym posted a topic in Works in Progress: Painting
I came across the start of a conversion from the last time my group played Battletech. The battlemech in question comes in several pieces and the stock look for the mech is firing platform on two leg-shaped struts: example of a well painted version in a stock pose (not painted by me) Now the idea of the mech coming in pieces is for you to adjust the pose yourself on assembly ... and of course for casting ... but really the only thing you can do without cutting the mech up is to create a "running mech" with the arms and legs pumping. However, if you look at the arms you can see that any real conversion comes from cutting and rebuilding: So, I first considered straightening one or both arms. However, upon closer inspection and sleeping on it, I decided that the effort wasn't worth it. However, I did get an idea as to how I wanted the Daishi to stand. I wanted its left foot raised onto a building's remains with the left leg straightened to hold the mech high as if it had just stomped through the HQ of the enemy. So I cut the left leg in two places: at the backward cantered knee and the toe. The knee joint is curved and sits in a groove so that was fun to cut apart. I cut the right leg at the knee and at the ankle. I built walls on the base using plastic and some putty to lock it all down. I left space around the left foot where the foot had shifted and left a partial impression. You can see the foot pinned to the base: Time to test fit all the pieces and see what pieces I would have to manufacture to get the final pose. So with some sculpey to hold the one side together I fit all the leg & torso pieces together: As you can see above I had a fairly decent gap in the right leg assembly to get the mech stable. So I built an ankle actuator around the pin above the right foot. And to ensure balance and stability I added a large piece of metal to the inside corner of the wall for the mech to stand on. After some fiddling and a series of tweak and dry fits, I finally had what I wanted: Finished parts: Final Assembly: Next we'll prime it so I can better see any outstanding mold lines or details that need fixing.- 3 replies
