  1. Hi guys, I haven't been here for the better part of a year, but I'm back with a huge "miniature". Its the Lysander model from Toscano, more of a statue than an actual miniature model. There have already been at least two of those in the forums, and they inspired me to paint my own. Also I paint to use the minis for D&D, and we were finishing a specific campaign where I needed a Tiamat miniature. Lysander has five identical heads, so I modified them to resemble the five evil dragon types from D&D lore. If you want to know more, please visit the WIP thread here. So may I present to you Tiamat, the Dark Queen of Dragons. I actually finshed painting the beast last December, but just got new photo hardware today to shoot the thing. Sir William Peacekeeper is facing Tiamat and Severin, the Cult of the Dragon's leader alone. Poor fool.
  2. So I'm DMing a group of D&D 5E where we've played the Tyranny of Dragons storyline for the last two years now. We're around session 80ish now, and my group is near the end, where I want them to encounter Tiamat herself. As I've used miniatures for all encounters so far, I need a Tiamat figue. When I saw the amazing WIP and Show-Off threads from Sirithiliel last year, I knew I had found the "miniature" I needed. Thank you for the inspiration, Siri. The model is called "Lysander" and is produced by Toscano. It's made out of some kind of resin and is pretty fragile (especially the horns). Wasn't easy to track down the figue, but then I found it on Amazon for 65 Euros including shipping to Germany. I understand that there are versions of this figure that come unpainted. Mine was painted in a nice green/yellow tone. But of course, this is not befitting of Tiamat ;) My plan was to go a little step further than Siri and change the heads, too. My players know the D&D dragons pretty well after a two-year-long dragon themed campaign, and they should be able to identify the typical D&D dragon heads. As of now, I am almost finished with the model. But if you like, I'll post the pictures of the process here. Here we go: Step 1: The figure out of the box I couldn't get the whole figure on camera with my usual photo setup. Will change setup for later pictures The model is about 29 cm high, has a wingspan of 38 cm and a base of about 18 cm. It's clearly not in a 28cm fantasy miniture scale like the Reaper miniatures (eyes are too big, base has mega huge tree under the dragon's claws), but it will do.
  3. Darth Sana She stared at her adversary with cool and calm calculation, the Jedi was nervous... she saw the fear in his eyes, yes... GOOOOOOD.... fear would cause him to make mistakes.. she'd cut him down with her force-imbued katana and notch another Jedi scum on her belt... She snarled at him, "Come and die, you fight the Sith Mistress!" ---------------------------------------------------- Manufacturer: White Wolf Miniatures 3 parts: Head, body, Sword. Scale: 70mm high Sculptor: Juan Puerta Casting: Sago This was a labor of love and fun for me, I decided as soon as I saw this beautiful bust that I was going to paint her up as 'evil' and the paint scheme that called to me was to paint her up to look like Darth Maul, I added the horns with copper wire and then sculpted them on with ProCreate. Towards the end of the project, I was trying to decide how to display her and it came to me that I wanted to make her part of a story, give her a bit more of the Star Wars tie-in with a completely scratch-built Tie Fighter. The title placards on the sides were designed by my good friend @Thrym and I printed them off on cardstock and glued them onto the plasticard sides of the tie fighter. The scabbard is my attempt at a sort of force rune, it is Kanji which translates into "Sith Mistress." WIP can be found here: Without further ado, I present (Darth) Sana from White Wolf Miniatures! Thanks for looking (and following along), C&C are welcomed and greatly appreciated!
  4. Good afternoon everyone! I've finished this tabletop + figure for one of my Players in my Broken Gods D&D game, this is Cairan the Warlock (pronounced as Keer-awn). He's the god of Death and War (tactics), think Valkyrie or the goddess "Morrigan" from Celtic lore. Anyhow, it took probably 4-ish hours do do this figure to the TT+ standard and I added an eagle or hawk familiar from one of the bones familiar packs to his shoulder painted up as a large crow as the character has a large crow as a familiar. Sorry for blurry pics, my phone is not cooperating with me today! Anyhow, C&C are welcomed and appreciated, thanks for looking!
  5. Just finished up with "Cadence", the figure is a modification of Dark Sword Miniatures Female Rogue (DSM-7437) where I cut off the dagger in the off-hand and added the lute from Reaper's Adventuring Accessories (02638) to make her into the party bard. WIP Pics here - Anyhow enough chatter, here she is at my Tabletop+ standard: Inspiration pic here - Thanks for looking! C&C are welcomed and appreciated.
  6. This feels like a dumb newbie question but: is there any issues or gotchas with mixing materials when modifying or converting minis and making bases? (Other than a light plastic mini falling over thanks to its big metal weapon I guess.) Obviously I'd need a primer that works on all of them, and it seems like CA glue ought to keep them all together, anything else?
  7. Hello, I made this for my younger brothers birthday present. I run a game with him and his friends. His character isn't an orc so I glued a fabric mask on to hide the orcish face. His character (Zanderluck) also lost his left hand and has a cursed gold handaxe that laughs when violent intent is sensed(also will eventually teleport back to him when he throws it or tries to hide it. I spent about 18 hours on it including the base, handaxe and hook. I wish I spent more time on the eyes and nose, that portion could use some more touch up. Also I could have done the rocks on the mini the same color as the rocks I used for the base. The handaxe sadly doesn't have the best grip on the model even after super glue, any tips for adhering metal pieces together other than glue? Aside from that I like critique and am trying to improve so please let me know what you think. (Let me know if the pictures are too detailed, had outside help take them)
  8. Hey folks! First timer here, though I must admit to lurking through the forums for quite some time before I got up the nerve to post something. I've only recently discovered Bones and I must say that i'm absolutely amazed with it. In a fit of curiosity I bought some green stuff from the local hobby store and went about trying to make my own miniatures. (This post isn't about that) the results were less than photo worthy, but i'm still working on it, so maybe i'll have something to show for my efforts. Anyways, i'm getting distracted, I'm currently running a home brew role-playing game with some friends and one of my players has been lamenting the fact that there aren't any red bearded Barbarian characters. (He sports a mighty beard.) I searched through the Bones stock and found that he was right - there really wasn't anything that suited. Then I remembered something that someone had posted in the craft corner about trying to modify miniatures before You try to sculpt your own. And Oh Boy - were they right. My apologies about the shots they were taken on my phone. I started with Goldar the Barbarian http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/goldar/latest/77047 Who as you can see is beardless, but he's got a nice well defined neck and I thought he'd be perfect to add a beard. As you can see the photo below i'm still a beginner as far as painting but I was very surprised how easy and effective a little bit of Green stuff goes. To whom ever suggested modification of Bones as a learning step you have my heartfelt thanks, You've made a certain red bearded barbarian very happy! Keep on Gaming! Chris
  9. So while at ReaperCon this year one of the vendors was selling various sizes of this Collapse Industries Alien Bust. I completely missed out on him and was a bit sad/disappointed about it when SGHawkins showed him to me claiming she purchased the last two of him. When she saw my disappointment, she laughed and tossed one of her two my way. I was super excited, it's outside my genre, but looked like a lot of fun to paint. I was suddenly struck with an idea to give him a bowl haircut and evil goatee. I approached Mori, but she was very busy with classes and art stuff so I figured why not ask another forum friend and amazing sculptor Talespinner if he'd be willing to smoosh together the mods. He was more than happy at my crazy idea and did it while I was in a class! Again, THANK YOU SG & ANDY!! Here's the WIP for this fun figure!
  10. Another modded player from my DnD5e group! The only modification is scraping of the cross from his shield and replacing it with the logo from Neverwinter Nights, but it's a modification none the less. I did this by first sculpting a stamp from green stuff and let it cure fully, and then "just" adding green stuff to the shield and stamping it (I put quotation marks around "just" because it took a bunch of tries before I got it straight). I am actually sort of surprised as to how nice the shield came out, especially after painting. Jandar is his name... Looking a bit boring here but.... ..BAM! The shield catches some attention! I really like the pose from this angle, it looks very action-y. And here's the back. I've tried to add as much colour as possible without making him silly, because it just felt super-boring to use the same colour over and over again. I hope you like him!
  11. So I started yammering a few days ago about swordsmen and fantasy literature, right? It started at Reapercon, when I overheard a conversation about what miniatures might best represent Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, two heroes of many a story of fantasy, magic, and swashbuckling. And it got me to thinking, "I really like Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser. And I could do that." I've done it before. Here's a piece I did back before the turn of the century: Yeah, I know, it stinks. I've done better since then. But this was about my second or third Conan, my first Reaper one, and, I think, my best up until then. I have two. One's in a shadow box. This one's in the living room, mounted on a rock I stole from Robert E. Howard's front yard in Cross Plains, Texas. This one made it easy, though. The most modification I did was to stick the thing on a rock once it was painted and clear coated. It ALREADY looked like Conan. Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, though... so... what "look" would I go with? I've read the books plenty of times. Fafhrd is a big hulking Northern barbarian with red hair and beard. The Mouser is a slight, short, slender type with black hair and olive skin, from the Southern cities, with cloak and hood of grey mouseskin (which often made me wonder if he made them himself? How many mice did that take? Strange hobby, there...) The oldest image I have that actually represents the two that I have was this book cover: Hm. It does cover the basics. But it wasn't quite satisfactory. In the first book, we establish that Fafhrd wants to become educated and learn civilized ways, and the stories do not indicate that he continues to go around dressed like King Conan. What else? Um... okay. Pirates. While it is true they did some pirating in the course of their careers, I don't think I want to immortalize them as pirates, considering most of their best adventures were in the city of Lankhmar. Plus, Fafhrd's hair and beard are the wrong color. And why the tartan sash? Keith Parkinson's famous cover for the TSR "Lankhmar" products. Better. But Fafhrd still looks like he just escaped from a Celtic renfair, a thing I find inappropriate for a Northern barbarian from Cold Corners, of all things. ....no. Just... no. ...now THIS... This is something I can work with. Naturally, it would be Mike Mignola artwork. I'm not crazy about how he dresses the Mouser, but finally, we establish that Fafhrd can dress in something he didn't peel off a dead animal half an hour ago. So... what figures are best suited to what I want to do? Ardellen the Ranger seemed like a good choice. Need to lose the shield, though. And thicken up that beard. For a smaller, slighter comparison, Tierce the Rogue seemed like a good call... but his pose and weapon are less than optimal. I'd have to repose him and switch out his scimitar for a rapier. What else? Danar the Assassin, now, seems like perhaps a better choice... narrow blade and dagger, and a nice action pose. As it is, I decided to go with all three, and see what came out best. I will begin with modifying Ardellen to lose the shield and replace it with a poniard, and reposing Tierce. (TO BE CONTINUED)
  12. So I decided to see if I could make an axe throwing pirate and started with Anatole. I went through all of the weapon kits and almost every character wielding axes in the Reaper catalog and finally decided the axes in the Camp Accssories pack were the best size and shape. I salvaged a hand from some elven warrior I had laying around and started chopping and reassembling. I need to get into some of the cracks with some green, but otherwise, I'm pretty happy with the progress so far. I will update when I get it greened and primed.
