Hello everyone! Here's a beautiful horse sculpted by Sandra Garrity for Reaper Miniatures. This equine looks a lot like 02064 Silverhorn the unicorn and 02150 Raindancer the Pegasus. 😉 It's the mount of the following riders; 02261 William Drakehart, 02273 Derek The Tall, 02235 Vanessa Redstorm and 02239 Mia Hartstorm. I didn't push the base any farter because it will later be embedded in a diorama and will no longer be visible. I'm currently painting the cavalier that will be mounted on it. Do you prefer black or white background on the pictures? Have a great day!

I really like the pony that comes with the Dwarf Mounted Battle Mage. I like the dwarf too but I really wanted just a couple ponies. It's easy to pop the dwarf off, cut the tab off the pony and put a little patch of greenstuff and scratch the hair to match the rest of his back. So now I have just a plain little pony!

Okay, here's the situation; my parents went away on a week's vacation, and now that you're rapping Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff to yourself (you are, right?), here's the real situation: I'm looking for a thing to represent a mounted Undead lord, the base size needs to be 75mm square (so fairly large), and it needs to occupy most of that space (or need minimal assistance from clever basing to look like it belongs on said base, at least). This precludes standard cavalry, obviously. It also needs to be wingless (or easily converted to wingless), as Wings would only serve to confuse my opponents in game (Kings of War). I'm open to any material, any manufacturer, though Reaper is strongly preferred. I'm thinking of also doing a non-traditional mount pose, like the Ghost King standing on the mounts back or shoulder or whatever, or even better, the Male Revenant from Bones 2. My first thought was to take one of the two Grave Golems I have and use that (without the gate wings), but that would really be stretching the empty space on the base to the max, as it's probably better suited for a 40mm square or 50mm square base at max. Of course, I could always fill the base with tombstones and skulls and stuff and build it up to the center, but I'd like to avoid that. The in-game creature is substantial and I'd like the mini to represent the size well. My next thought was I could do something like @Girot did for the Bone Horror (3rd picture in the store), which he nixed the wings from, and I think it looks fine. The problem here is the monster itself is pretty substantially threatening without a rider and doesn't really look like a mount. I'm not sure where I would put one (I could put a traditional saddled mount on it I guess, but I'm iffy on this idea). The main issue I have pulling the trigger on this beastie though is size, I'm not seeing Bryangles on the store pics, and having a hard time finding other scale shots with this guy in it. I see on his Deviant Art page, Girot says he used a 60mm round, do you think an extra 15mm each side would be too much? Especially because that's all in one dimension? The rest of the base will need a lot of doctoring to make up for the emptiness. Any other ideas?

Hi all! Just recently finished painting my first Ral Partha figure: a heavy-armored warrior and a pretty dragon! Getting the pieces to fit together was a bit of a hassle (maybe it was a bad mould?), but after I got that sorted out I decided to go to with a classic blue dragon look. Look at those chompers!!! Used MSP Dragon Blue (29815) for the scales and wings, Sparkling Blue (09104) for the plate scales on the spine, and a mix of the Blonde Triad for the belly scales, horns, and wings. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with this one. Certainly earned a display place on my desk.

From one of my Friday Pathfinder games, I present Ojar. He is our cavalier, and has several children with the queen, but we refuse to call him "king" on account of how terrible a leader he has proven himself to be. He is mounted upon his noble elk steed Ozmataz and wields his legendary falchion Buckshank. He flies the flag of our kingdom Arcadia, which we have built up over the past few irl years using Kingdom building and Downtime rules. The colors and designs are by the player's request, except for the red horse armor, which I painted red because the original metallic made it all look washed out. I tried to use static grass, but I haven't figured out how to make it not look awful. This took entirely too long to finish, but life happens. Comments and criticism requested. This is a conversion piece. The horse is from Lord Vandrian (14186) with the antlers from Beastmen of the Wyld (02900). The body is the Pathfinder Iconic cavalier (60045), and the falchion is from a weapon pack, but I don't remember which because I just have a pile of weapons. On a somewhat related note, do any of you have a good way of transporting larger minis like this? It doesn't fit in my small Chessex foam-lined box, so I've been carrying it in a cardboard box with bubble wrap. I have several larger minis I regularly use in my tabletop games and would like a better solution. Thanks for looking!

In my Pathfinder group, I have a paladin who is fast approaching level 5, and I've decided that she'll be getting a nice shiny mount as her Divine Bond. As such, the quest for a mini began. While Reaper has a nice bundle of horses, I couldn't find anything that was quite right for my pally, so I ended up grabbing Starmane and commencing a conversion. Starmane I originally bought to convert into a centaur, but I hadn't got round to it and then I decided he was just too pretty to chop up to that degree... But I've not got a lot of use for unicorns. So instead, he got adopted for my pally, and first things first, his horn had to go. Much angry filing later, I had something I could live with. Don't mind my grotty nails, I get fluff lodged under them from the insides of my gloves at work, so they always look dire, haha. And then I broke out my green stuff. So far, I've only used GS for a little bit of basing interest on Ebonwrath, and on a belt buckle for a cosplay I was doing, so nothing small and fine, really. Armed with my trusty mechanical pencil, I started working on a saddle, bridle, and some other little details for my pally's dear horse, who I have already named Keldoron. I have now ordered some actual sculpting tools, because... Erghhh, my pencil is not the best thing xD though it's served me admirably, all things considered. No doubt I'll still use it from time to time too, and I think my next sculpting purchase will likely be Army Painter's set of tools, for more precision and stuff. The horse is now sprayed, so I'll be LGS'ing to smooth bits and out and reform a bit, and then on to the painting! So m'afraid this will likely be a very short WIP thread, but I kind of couldn't resist ^^; Once he's painted though, I can't decide what to do with his reins... Do I put some wire on for them? Do I glue some string on? I know not. :S

My exchange partner this time around was Teskeria. She requested unicorns, pegasus, dragons, alicorns, mages, rogues, or swordmasters. I was fresh out of unicorns and pegasus, and I was pretty sure I didn't have any alicorns but I looked up what they were just to be sure. While I did have some PC characters from the Bones kickstarters, they are pretty ubiquitous around the forum and I didn't want to give away something my partner already had. What about a mount you say? Well as it happens Reaper does in fact make one. Barros & Tempest actually comes with a choice of three different riders. There is a fully armored knight with a lance, a male knight with a lance, and a female with a sword. My idea was to have it leaping off of a cliff face or something, but having used cork instead of carving a wooden block (which I thought of after the fact) I was worried that the cork might tear under the weight of the mini and set it back from the edge a little bit. The rock serves two purposes: it will give Teskeria something to grab onto during play and it elevates the mini high enough that the wings should be able to clear any "medium size" creature on the table. To give you an idea of the wingspan, that is a 3" reaper base that the mini is nailed to. No really. Nails. She can take a picture if you don't believe me.

While I was painting my Barros & Tempest exchange mini I snapped a few pics to do a WIP with. I may have been overenthusiastic to start and a little forgetful towards the end, but I think I captured the bulk of the process. My plan is to post the images in bulk, so while it'll be broken up into a few posts I should have it all posted after lunch. I cropped and resized the images down to a height of 1000px to keep the filesize under control, but you can still see plenty of gory details once you open them in the image viewer. To start, this is what Reaper sends you as part of the Borros & Tempest set. There is a lot of metal here, almost half a pound. Of course, you're not going to use it all so there will be some things left over for the bits box. Looking at the boneyard, the spear is available separately but the shield comes with a body so you'll always have something extra. And here's what I won't be using. The bones goroloth (sp?) didn't come with a stand so I may re-purpose that at a later date. The idea was to have Tempest leaping off of the side of a cliff. Cork = rock so often that it was what I started with, only thinking about carving some scrap wood well after the fact. Because I was worried about the heavy mini tearing the cork out I compromised and set it back from the edge a bit. After pushing the first nail through and getting an idea of where the mini would have to be in relation, I just eyeballed the second one. Measuring is overrated. And behold Borros and Tempest completely done it TMM! Ok ok, so this was just making sure all my pins lined up. I also used milliput slurry in a few places and built up an apparent missing chunk in the leg. While I never took any pics, the underside of the mount was very rough and also had a hole where the stand would have attached. This all got filled in, but between the hanging cloth and limited viewing angle it was basically all done in solid shadow colors. And now for paint! Orange and purple were the requested colors. While I don't approve of orange, purple is a nice color. I wasn't going to paint a purple horse though. Some areas that would eventually become steel were undercoated in charcoal, as well as the eyes & hooves. The gold was undercoated with ochre so I wouldn't have to worry about coverage issues with it either. My new Scalecolor Wood & Leather set had recently arrived, and the saddle seemed as good a test subject as any. So far I am liking its basic leather look, though I really haven't tried much of the wood or red leather yet. I hadn't actually painted anything equine yet, so I didn't actually know where highlights and shadows go just by looking. Instead I just used logicTM and followed along with the sculpted muscles. And now I'm getting hungry, so that it all you get until after lunch.

For the exchange I was given a pretty wide latitude on what to paint (or some might argue, a general lack of direction ). I decided to go with the "try something different" suggestion. Let's see... First mount. First milliput slurry fill. I also tried tried using sealer as a fill in a few places. First water at the edge of the base needing a form. First water effects. First icicles. First wooden base. First moss First flowers First use of a jewelers saw to remove some horns. Second snow base (the Almaran I posted awhile back was the test subject). Tried a new "cold green" layering for the skin. I wasn't sure how well it would work, but if it didn't I wouldn't have to look at it anymore. I also tried making use of gloss vs. matte effects. I was going for a spring thaw look, so I tried leaving the snow glossy so it would look like it was melting while making the mini, flora, and rocks matte. I also like wood to "glow," and tried to cheat it. And yes, I did paint the grass. So to show off my progress after almost one year of painting minis we have the Kargir Tundra Beast Rider. I also took a few pictures before sealing just in case I screwed it all up. Now I have a benchmark to look back on once I reach the end of mini painting year 2.

So, one of the characters in my AD&D game is a halfling fighter who has acquired a riding dog. While the character's mini is relatively easy (I'm using Bailey Silverbell, because close enough - armored halflings are hard to find, female ones worse, and specifically banded mail?), I've strangely been having trouble finding a mounted halfling, let alone a dog big enough to be a riding dog. (There's one 25-28mm halfling mounted on a dog that I can find, one of the Wizard's pre-paints). So I'm looking for a decent-sized dog, although preferably not a mastiff (that's not a show-stopper) that's big enough to represent a decent mount relative to Bailey. I've looked at Garr and the guard dogs pack from Reaper, and Garr might work, but is a bit noble, and the guard dogs are too aggressive (the dog has so far been a bit of a lovable goof - more like the big dog from Kiki's Delivery Service, actually, than a Ferocious Attack Dog). So, obviously, there's always leeway in trying to find the right figure for a character, and concessions are nearly always made. But anyone have any other options that might be doable, for a large dog - or know of someone actually producing mounted halflings that might work?
