continuing my quest to paint down some of my metal mountain of dragons is my second Green Dragon II from Grenadier. I wound up with multiple copies of this dragon (I wont say how many but i still have another in its original box...) so when i noticed that i had primed this one a while ago, i decided to try the painting method from Mocha's painting a Rocky class during Reapercon (thanks @Mocha I am getting a lot of use out of that technique and it has definitely helped me with contrast in everything I paint) of starting with the darkest colors and working up to the brightest. This is the result of my trial with the dragon of the month series . I decided that since they liked swamps and other watery environments, i would give her a bed of dry river rocks in an underground cave. (hey everyone likes a comfy bed but nobody really likes a wet bed!) so i started with the base the miniature came with and expanded from there bringing the rocks out from there. The first pass had them all a monotone color which left the base looking almost black and white against the green dragon. Interesting but not what i wanted. Some colored inks later and we have a nice bed of various colored rocks! She comes out really vibrant with lots of shadow and contrast really nice! About my only fault is i haven't given much thought to handling a different colored belly scale and how a significantly lighter scale would work given the steady darkening as the light lowers past the widest parts of the model. Oh well, maybe next time. For comparison, this is the same dragon I did about a decade ago: I like both but i dont have to guess about which one will catch the most attention, even though it took far less time and skill. I am happy to give both of them a home, though i should probably give the older one a new base and maybe fix a few of his chips and dings (honorably gotten eating unwary PCs and their horses!) As the year wears on i continue to complete my personal challenge of 12 dragons in 12 months. (I have to go count but i think i am there... not sure though so I keep it up!) this is another oldie but goodie from the third Dragon of the month series by Grenadier. this was the January offering, the black dragon. I decided that this dragon liked his underground layer so the base is done as a broken river skree. the large open space made me add a small geode, just to see if i could do it. The dragon is painted with dark blacks and Purple shadow (which actually looks darker than the black so there!) Then i used some new wax paints i acquired to bring up the colors on the highlights to give him a shiny scale and brightness. I think this is the first time i have created a dragon that actually looks black but still has lots of texture and contrast. Again congrats to grenadier for acquiring some really lovely sculpts and turning them out back when high definition was not a popular feature. there is a lot to see on this dragon, right down to the small row of teeth that line the edges of his closed mouth. I had a lot of fun painting him. I hope you enjoy him too!

Minivember is here once again! I know that today is the 5th so I'm going to have to play a little catch up as I was on vacation until yesterday evening. Now I need to get started painting so this will probably be a shorter intro post than previous years. You may ask why the title says "The Last." Well because this is the last year that I am going to be doing Minivember. Next year I'll have a new fun thing but it will be in October instead of November because of how busy this time of year is for me. And I know that the holidays are part of the challenge but it's getting to be too much of a challenge. This year I'm going to be painting minis from Shadows of Brimstone that I have not yet finished. My goal (like every year) is to paint at least thirty (30) unique minis, one (1) for each day. While I've reached this goal in the past I'm going to push myself a little further this year and try to get all of one type of the mini painted. Some of them have up to six (6) of the same mini. I chose to paint this because I want to play the game again and this is a great time to get it done. While this is not all of the SoB minis that I have to do it is a good chunk of them. Anyway, here's this year's calendar and I'll be posting photos as soon as I can.

It's almost that time of year again! And by that I mean it's almost November. I started this last year in place of doing NaNoWriMo. Instead of writing a novel I paint a mini a day. I have tweaked the rules slightly from last year since I wasn't able to complete it the way I wanted to because life. So here are the revised rules and my calendar. I'm going to try to do this one mini each day but if that fails as long as I have 30 minis at the end of the month I'll consider it a success. Rules: Must paint at least 30 minis (1 for each day) 1 sculpt = 1 mini Prep beforehand is encouraged. No brush restrictions Calendar: I only do this for my sanity and to keep me on track and motivated. This year all but 2 of the minis are from Bones 3. There probably won't be much updating to this until November actually starts or is very near to it. I think that's it for now. Thanks for looking!

I decided to participate in order to try to make some headway on my vast collection of unpainted neglected minis. My sister was visiting so although I painted, I have not been on the computer until today. I got out a bunch of figures that I thought that I could finish. I started with some simple ones since I had company and so far am pretty much on schedule with 18 completed. I have torture chamber accessories, 12 goblins, and the goblin drummer and drum carrier from Bones 3. Still on deck: Thanks to my sickly dogs and my husbands use of electrolytes for his races, I have an unending supply of holders. What it really serves to do is make me go in and put paint on figures when I see so many ready. Behind those, I have a bunch of "shelf of shame" figures that are destined for the Thanksgiving Weekend Challenge. I am so hoping to get many figures off the table this month. And get better pictures going forward.

Getting set up for this. My goal is to finish painting at least one figure per day. I have a good number that are already started, so I should be able to handle this in the beginning. I won't be able to name each and every model since so many are old and out of package for so long, but if anyone can offer help on that, it would be great. I won't be following such strict rules as others have. Just that by December 31 I should have posted photos of 31 newly painted figures.

So. I've decided that this year instead of participating in National Novel Writing Month, which I have never successfully finished, I'm going to paint a mini a day. I've still got a ton of bones laying around from the Bones 2 kickstarter that I want to get done before Bones 3 gets to me. I also want to finish painting up what I have of Shadows of Brimstone before the rest of it gets here as well. If all else fails I plan to paint at least 30 unique minis by the end of the month. I've laid out a calendar and some rules for myself. Rules: 1.) Must be roughly human sized, 28-33 mm or larger (horizontally or vertically) 2.) 1 sculpt counts as 1 mini. 3.) Prep beforehand is totally permitted (washing, boiling, priming, gap filling, removing mold lines, etc) 4.) More than one model a day is great! But it doesn't count towards future days. 5.) 24 hours for one mini only 6.) Take pictures of time and date before and after finishing each mini. Must include mini in both pictures. EDIT: This will be a very picture heavy thread. EDIT 2: Here is where I will be putting my show off threads once I get around to making them.
