  1. This is a catgirl pirate ( "Nyamaunir-Piratin"), figure #15503C from Das Schwarze Auge, produced under license by Ral Partha Europe (which is not Ral Partha). Got that? She is a wee bit on the small side. Here from left to right are a cat person (Khaliman) from the French "Alkemy" game, our little kee kat pirate, Reaper's 77340: Avatar of Sekhmet, and Reaper's 03478: Tawny Firehair, Cat Girl. Here she is up close. She has some nice details and a more fuzzy appearance than most of the cat people minis I've seen. This is my standard priming: A thinned coat of Titanium White allowed to dry for a full day, then a wash with thinned Burnt Umber. It's related to Renaissance painting techniques and I find it gives a good warm foundation to start from. I was painting her at the same time as some wolves, for economy of paint. I figure I'm going to paint her like a grey cat. The first coat of paint is a light grey mixed from Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna, lightened a good deal with white. Here's a back view: It may be noticed I'm a little casual how I apply my paint. There are bits not covered and the paint has been thinned down and it isn't always the same opacity because of that and the under-brown shows through. I mixed a slightly more translucent, darker version of the same grey and added some more. Then I took some matte pure Carbon Black and indicated in her eyes, nose, mouth, and claws. I put an undercoat of black on her sabers as long as I was at it, since I find it looks very good under silver. Tune in later to find out what's next ...
  2. Just wanted to post some pictures of a few figures I finished up recently in an effort to clear off some of the stuff that's been gathering dust on my paint table, so they'd be ready for the game table. I'm not 100% sure of the identity of each of these figures other than manufacturer. The first is an old Heartbeaker Hobbies and Games sword-woman. The second is a pirate from Eureka The third was some sort of witch or sorceress (I can't exactly remember), from the Deadlands game.
  3. Knarthex sent me a few Ral Parha Pirates for my Lost World Project. Thx George! So I painted the first one up as Old Nedd from my stories. Here he is on a resin jungle base, ready to seek out gold. For those interested the WIP is here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/69308-lost-world-project-xherman1964-paints-coldblooded-creatures-and-conquistadores/

    The Pirate

Another Games Workshop mini (at this point you should probably assume anything I paint is from there unless stated otherwise), a former Dark Elf Fleetmaster (I'm not sure what his new, fancy Age of Sigmar name is). This guy was a serious pain in the bum to paint, even with my tiny brushes I was forever getting paint on the wrong bits, in hindsight I probably should have realized fully assembling him first was a big mistake. But I persevered and I don't think the final results are too bad! As always, any comments or criticisms are warmly received.
  9. Hey all, I figure maybe, just maybe if I do this as an actual WIP, I might actually try and finish this piece. I have an upcoming 2 day class with Alfonso (Banshee), and part of the class is something called sketching atmosphere, using a 75mm figure. I'll know more about this, after the class.....so I'm trying to figure out how best to get the piece ready for class day. So on to the figure.... Yikes, it's resin and white metal! And the resin, well, detailed - but issues.... Just like everyone said....these braids, they are gonna break, (which they did) 75mm...and I swear I've seen bigger eyes on my 28mm Huge mold/? Line in a very difficult place.....the curvature makes it hard to get into with straight tools/files. I left my drill at work....dang. A few more pics, for anyone interested in buying this kit. (Since I couldn't find any online before I bought)
  10. It's hard to get a good picture of this guy, what with this protruding arms.
  11. So, yeah late! But I got my Package and am sending out one in a couple days. So, first what I got... Not sure who exactly sent it, but it is awesome:) And what I'm sending... Dual Wielding Beer and Blade, Kerdak Bonefist from the Reaper Pathfinder line. I'll be sending a few bitz of extras with the package. Hoping it will make them "Howl" in thanks:P GF
  12. This past week I started painting the Pirates set from the Bones 1 KS, and painted the Mariel Twinspar, Female Pirate figure. I'm pleased with how she turned out and I'm glad I made the extra effort to decorate her coat, though in retrospect I wish I had taken a little more time with it, and concentrated on spacing and uniformity of the designs more. Since my pirate games take place in taverns and boats as well as in outdoor land settings, I usually leave the bases a plain tan color so they blend in both indoors and outdoors .
  13. I painted this around 9 months to a year ago and am just now getting up the courage to start posting some of my minis. This one I'm pretty proud of. My photography skills on the other hand could use some work.
  14. Just a few shots of my finished minis from Bombshell Miniature's recently shipped Kickstarter: The Imperator: The refugee from Draenor: The Orc Shaman: The Cap'n: The Mascot: And the group:
  15. Another day, another miniature for me to post. This one I was a little unsure of if I should post, but with how nice everyone has been I think I should! This one is the Pirate Sophie miniature, I saw it on Ebay and knew I had to have it! I have tried to make the parrot as realistic as I could, and for the photos I took heed of the advice given by Chaoswolf in the thread about my Wyvern, and have tried to get better light, though it has not been easy with my resources! Anyway here's the pictures, comments and advice are gratefully received!!
  16. I've just started watching the TV show Black Sails (yeah, I know it's been on for 3 seasons already, you hush ) and it put me in the mood to paint some pirates. This is an old Mage knight figure; it was called Xandressan Captain. She certainly looks like a pirate to me, so she got a quick makeover. Tabletop paint as usual; I think the most interesting part about the figure is her base. I made the ship's deck from toothpicks, which I first stained and then used several different inks to try and give it an interesting appearance. The base took at least as long as the figure; measuring, cutting, and placing the 'boards' took forever! I like the way it came out, though. I hope you like her.
  17. Yet another of the Conga Line of half-finished minis, finished. This is Reaper 03155, Vandora Waverunner, Pirate. She's painted up for a player who wanted a female pirate figure who was sensibly dressed. The character comes from an area of the world with hyperbolic geometry -- basically a like an M. C. Escher lithograph. There are a few clues to this on the figure. For one, her hat is impossible. No fault of the sculptor for not knowing, but that's a shape based on a relatively recent misunderstanding of an old 2-D image of a plain old three-cornered hat seen from an odd angle, which has been propagated and exaggerated through visual tropes until people don't see anything weird about it. It is, therefore, very useful as a visual clue to the bent space of the character's origins. The other clue is her map, which is a graph of hyperbolic geometry. All the angles are right angles, and yet they form regular hexagons instead of squares. I played some with reflections on her too, in the sword and the shading on the hat trim, both of which reflect her scarlet coat in different ways. Original WIP here.
  18. This is one of the figures I've been finishing off as part of my end-of-the-year clearing out of half-done figures: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/66344-pingos-conga-line-of-half-finished-minis/ I like this little Patrick Keith pirate.
  19. At first glance it looks like this guy is carrying a boom box.
  20. just a quick wip - still doing basecoating. Working out my colour scheme. I'm going to try to do the wizard's staff more like an icicle, we'll see how that goes lol
  21. So I'm painting up this figure as a PC because I haven't anything quite suitable. She's a ship's captain from a strange corner of the world with hyperbolic geometry. I am planning to do a little hyperbolic graph based on some of M.C. Escher's designs on her parchment. It also accounts for the shape of her hat, which is an ahistoric error based on a misunderstood flat image of a perfectly ordinary tricorne hat. Not that I blame Ridolfi for that. That hat has entered pop culture the same way "Juliet caps" have, and with as little historical reality. Anyhow, I can lay the hat's shape at the feet of hyperbolic geometry, so hey. I started with a priming of Titanium White paint. The paint is pretty thin and translucent, much less opaque white than it appears in the photograph. I stuck her to a little jar with some poster tack and washed her with Burnt Umber to bring out the details. I love the details on this figure. The skull on her hat seems to be giving the o.O look. I was working with some pink, so I warmed it up a bit and painted her face. I think she looks a little sinister at the moment. I think it might be the shadows under her eyes and the eyebrows.
  22. Since more people are showing off what they did last year, here are mine: Minis I painted in 2015. ( seems I have been busy) I will link them so you can check them out. http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/66228-54mm-maria-roseblade-pirate-queen-by-xherman1964/ http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/65908-pumpkin-witches-and-their-house-by-xherman1964/ http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/65484-legendarion-hyena-warrior-bust-gebhuza-by-xherman1964/ http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/64977-zombicide-survivor-dog-painted-as-my-boxer-brutus-by-xherman1964/ http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/63196-bonnie-chonoscope-by-xherman1964/ http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/60500-77117-vandorendra-snake-demon-bones/ http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/63938-kabuki-bust-ky-ra-female-barbarian-16-scale-xherman1964/ http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/61631-xherman1964-paints-a-ral-partha-hill-troll/ http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/62215-beloved-of-sobek-by-xherman1964-crocodile-games/ http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/61632-stygian-guardian-chronopia/ http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/61214-77100-vanja-fire-giant-queen-bones/ http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/60959-undead-regiment-in-a-swamp-mixed-manufacturers/ http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/60445-zombie-grenadier-horseman/
  23. So In order to participate in the 54mm Challenge. I will start with the Master Series 54mm Pirate Queen, Maria Roseblade. First step, prepping and assembly.
  24. I needed a break from my samurai project, so I decided to work on this dwarf pirate from M Proyec. It's a little bit bigger than the standard gaming figure, roughly 46mm to the eyes. I wanted a slightly less natural skin tone, so I mixed in some Burgundy Wine with the Rosy Shadow, then some Vampiric Shadow with Fair Skin and Vampiric Skin with Fair Highlight. It created a paler, colder skin. I still want to go in with glazes to add more color variation and reinforce the shadows, but that will wait until after I do the hair. The coat is a dull red I created using a 3 to 2 mix of Violet Red with Dark Elf Highlight for the base. It's shaded with Burgundy Wine and highlighted with a 50/25/25 mix of Fire Red, Dark Elf Highlight, and Vampiric Shadow. The final highlights are made by adding in a bit more Vampiric Shadow to that mix. The pants are still a work in progress. I began by sketching in the stripes, then I did most of the shading and highlighting on the white (cleaning up the stripes as I went). The blue stripes still need shading and highlighting though. For the comparison, the first image is the coat with shading and midtone, but no highlight. The bandanna also is just a dark base. The rest of the images shows it with those sections completed. Makes it much easier to see the difference the increased contrast of the highlights makes.
