  1. It's the weekend...you know what time it is! I normally don't like doing redo's but, both of my completed minis today are from my junk pile. I tried them both and failed at them both. However, I wasn't willing to give up on them. A quick bath in some Simple Green and we're ready to rock again. BATTLE REPORT! Wins: * Still trying to learn gradients and pushing contrast. Both were wins here this time. I used the blue as a big sweep from blue to white. Same with the sword going from yellow to white. * I think the blue spectral form worked well and made for a fun eye-catching color. I'm not 100% sold on the sword colors, but I tried to pull it together in both the jewel from the crown, the glow in the palm, and tie the sword as if it's all part of the spell. * The cape was a fun test of patience. I used only black and white. Going from a deep grey mix of black/white, then all the way up to light grey with a white/black mix. I think some of the shaded ares are a bit heavy, but I'm getting much more comfortable blending and pushing mixes. WIN! * The armor was a cool combo of using the same deep black/white grey mix I did in the cape and used that as the base and then did the trim with a gunmetal/aluminum mix. Then pushed the points with a straight aluminum mix. Win! * I really worked with the thinning of the paint. I used flow improver from Liquitex and just dipped the brush tip in and only slightly mixed it in. Worked better than water and was able to spread this better. I've been developing this method over the last 4 minis and it's working really, really well. * Loving the airbrush priming. Went with a black base of Stynylrez and then zenithal from the top angle with white ink. Win! Misses: * Eyes - I started with the yellow theme to match the sword, but turns out the right eye has a weird slope on it and when I put the yellow in there it wanted to run downward. I figured adding a black dot in there would be better, but nope. I like that it tied to the sword, but I feel like something's missing in the eyes. * Sword color - to have a sun sword for a ghost seems a bit strange. I just couldn't think of another color to make that sword work. Open for some suggestions here. I definitely think the priming method is helping me identify different folds of the cape or shading. I'm happier every day with this this airbrush. I was really holding off on getting it, but I'm very happy I went for it. Gotta base this thing still and looking for ideas there, too. Any thoughts? Pictures help me on anything someone thinks would be good.
  2. This is the Reaper CAV "Spectre" in Bones, number "**94006" (I hope). Story time: Having only painted a handful of fantasy figures, my CAV earlybird robots arrived, and I became paralyzed. "How do I paint them? What colors? Do I paint them all the same color? Or in squads? How do I build squads? Where are the rules? Oh no what if I do it wrong?" Yet, when I assembled them all, I found an excuse! A Spectre with two left arms. Aha! Reaper wastes no time in shipping out a replacement, so my reprieve will, it seems, be brief. When my box arrives, I tear into it expecting a tiny mech arm to be floating in all the packaging materials, only to find an entire complete Spectre! They sent me a whole figure instead of just the arm! Well, that means I still have a 'spare' Spectre, with his unorthodox firing methods, so that's nice. But what's this? Paint? Free paint! A bottle of Reaper MSP Promo 09659 Ginger Cookie! Clearly, this was a suggestion. Sophie, upon packing up my Spectre knew I needed a nudge, and thus provided it. So "Leftie" is going to be a cookie mech. Blessed with freedom from choice, I actually started getting to work. Paralysis blasted! He's an extra, so who cares if I ruin him? I can't go wrong! To start, I filed off (some) mold lines, boiled him to straighten things out, washed him with a soapy toothbrush, rinsed, dried, and stuck his bits to bottles. Then I slathered on a coat of unthinned Ginger Cookie. By the time I finished the parts I could get, it had dried enough for a second coat. His bits: Closeup of my slathering skills: I'm planning to glue in his, er, Crotch, to the knees, but leave the rest un-glued so I can rotate him and stuff. Tips, ideas, suggestions welcome, but don't expect the painting to get much better than "looks ok, mostly, from a distance, without your glasses on".
  3. And now here are the current three! Lots of fun to paint these guys, all three have great expressions.
  4. Here are the next three chibis. Very fun to paint! The brightness of the ghost made these a little more challenging to photograph as a group, though. Those who have seen ReaperPeeps at shows might recognize the bowling shirt on Bart...
  5. So, I don't know if promo is allowed, so message me and I'll remove this if it's not, but I'm just SO. EXCITED! I got featured on the website of the next con I'll be doing the Art Show at! (Awesomecon Indianapolis.) Check it out!
  6. Reaper ran a special where any orders placed during Gen Con 2014 received a copy of this figure. I finished painting one up, and here she is.
  7. While at GenCon this year I tried to track down how to get https://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Special%20Edition%20Figures/latest/01531 Kyrie the female Barbarian. I found a promo code and was told I would have to order it from the Reaper site. I went to check out and I couldn't find anywhere to enter the promo code. Do you actually need the promo code? Can anyone just purchase her for the next few days? I am sorry if I am just terribly missing something. I've never tried to purchase a limited edition figure before from anywhere and just feel like I really don't know what I'm doing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -Nym
