Etherfields has some strange miniatures concepts. I wanted to embrace the dreamlike quality of them all by giving them a unified mood. So all of these minis use purple shadows and pale green highlighting.

2020 has-been rough on everyone but some people have had it rougher than others. A friend of mine is disabled and has had a really hard time just trying to keep basic necessities done. I thought I would send her a little friend who's got simpler an cuter problems. Purple is her favorite color. He goes out in the mail on Monday Hope you like him too...

This is Reaper's 59009: Mad Scientist, sculpted by Bob Ridolfi. I thank Reaper for proffering Victorian Science Ladies in Big Dresses, and I am looking forward to painting her up. I am, as usual, working with Golden matte fluid acrylic paints. This is my standard priming, a thin wash of thinned-down Titanium White allowed to dry for a day then washed further with thinned-down Burnt Umber. I don't know if I've mentioned, but this is a classic Italian Renaissance priming technique. I can't remember the term, but it translates as "veil" of color and is supposed to give richness to subsequent layers of color. In this case it also makes details pop. I clearly missed a few spots with the Burnt Umber. I will be repairing those as I go along. I started with her skin. I like the Foglios' "Girl Genius" comic, so she is a little inspired by them. They have plenty of diversity in their cast, and I thought this figure might look well with darker skin. I have found that Burnt Umber, a slightly cool, rich dark brown, makes a good basis for dark human skin. This is the first layer, a light scumble (like a glaze but using a lighter color over a darker instead of vice versa) of Burnt Umber lightened just a touch with Titanium White. Dark skin, I find, looks well with warm highlights based on Yellow Ochre. I painted her skin quite dark, so I made the highlights a little cooler, less Yellow Ochre and more Titanium White, admixed with Burnt Umber. Here she is with her skin finished and her eyes painted in. I washed some clear Quinacridone Magenta over her lips. Her eyes were pretty enormous to begin with and I made them even larger. I am thinking mauve for her dress. Purple ftw!

So I realized I only had one painted dwarf (!) when one of my GMs asked me if I had anything for the Jadeborn, a race in Exalted that is roughly equivalent to dwarves except for the 0.001% who are roughly equivalent to elves. And they are also sort of stone golems. Based on jade. I thought Reaper's 60184: Meyanda, Android Priestess, sculpted by Bobby Jackson, would do well for one of the elfy artisan Jadeborn and I pulled out a random assortment of seven (because of course) dwarves for the worker and warrior Jadeborn. All paints used are Golden Matte Fluid Acrylics. Color mixes are (usually) noted, but not exact ratios. Questions are welcomed and I will try to answer them. Critiques are appreciated. This is the way I usually start miniature figures: Lightly primed with Titanium White, then when that is dry, washing it over with Burnt Umber. Burnt Umber is a dark, transparent pigment that settles into crannies when thinned down and shows the details very well. It also gives a nice warm undertone to later paint layers. I left a few crystal and gem areas white so they will have more luminosity later. So, I'm a part of a Bi-Monthly Twitter Secret Santa'like Exchange called #BoxofManyThings! I'm doing Miniatures for both of the organizers of it and this is one of them. The individual in question goes by the Handle, owlbare on twitter and uses a Purple Owlbear as his Avatar. So I chose to do up a Cute little Owlbear for him in his signature Colors. These are actually his photos since I forgot to take any! Anywho, hope you enjoy:) GF

Y'all know the drill...

I speed-painted these over two afternoons to be a party of NPC adventurers for an eclectic mash-up of Exalted and the World of Darkness. They are 77322, Kassandra of the Blade (sculpted by Werner Klocke); 77405, Aeris, Female Elf Ranger (sculpted by Julie Guthrie); as-yet unnumbered Mythos figures based on 50032: Jake Ryan, Hero Explorer (sculpted by Bobby Jackson) and the Victorian Lord from the set 50326: Victorian Lord & Dame (sculpted by Bob Ridolfi); and 77409, Flara, Elf Heroine (sculpted by Werner Klocke). My GM needed a party of NPCs fast for a game of Exalted set in the World of Darkness (think fantasy characters popping up in a modern day world, more or less). There was no time to order anything, but we had the handy new Bones III core and Mythos sets. These are the Bones minis 77322, Kassandra of the Blade (sculpted by Werner Klocke); 77405, Aeris, Female Elf Ranger (sculpted by Julie Guthrie); as-yet unnumbered Mythos figures based on 50032: Jake Ryan, Hero Explorer (sculpted by Bobby Jackson) and the Victorian Lord from the set 50326: Victorian Lord & Dame (sculpted by Bob Ridolfi); and as a free bonus 77409, Flara, Elf Heroine (sculpted by Werner Klocke), who was simply a "Vale Swordsman Elf Grunt" in metal (she was the first character picked for the one represented by Kassandra of the Blade, and I painted her up anyway as an extra and useful figure). I painted these really fast -- for me -- in two afternoons, one to prime and paint faces and one to paint the rest of them. It's not quite my one-hour robot speed paint, but for me it was super fast and the results are more tabletop-quality than my usual run. First I washed and primed all the Bones with Reaper's Brown Liner. I did not clean flash up as much as normal owing to the tight deadline. Skin work, using simple mixes of earth pigments plus white: Burnt Umber (for the darker skin tones), Burnt Sienna (for the pinker, lighter skin tones), Red Iron Oxide (for really pink skin) ,and Yellow Ochre plus Titanium White. Hair was laid in with the same palette plus Carbon Black. Rough shading with ruddy Burnt Sienna-Titanium White shadows and greyer Burnt Umber-Titanium White shadows. This character, a former Fae, has dramatic blue-streaked hair. This is a classic mix of Phthalocyanine Blue and enough Titanium White to make it opaque.

Rather than clutter up the topic in sci-fi general with the details of how I'm painting these guys, I decided to start a wip thread. The plan is to paint all the marines in the primaris half of the new warhammer 40000 starter box. So far I know the base colors I'm going with are purple armor, silver trim, blue weapons, green lenses. I haven't decided on squad markings or chapter symbol yet. This is of course not the colors of a canonical chapter, so I'm making it up as I go. I painted two test models just to make sure purple, blue, silver looked ok.

Earlier this week I got my hands on a set of bones 3 mythos cultists. I'm not really that into cthulhu, but I do love a crazy looking cult. So I went with purple robes with bronze weapons, and painted the faces as masks. Not really sure if they were meant to be masks, but I think it worked.

Okay, this is a WIP of the making of the vignette, not the entire paint process. This is my first post here, so bear with me if I have to modify stuff. If the descriptions come out by the right photos the first time, I'll be pleasantly surprised :-) The post is going to be photo heavy, so I reduced the size of all of them. Hopefully it won't be too bloated. #1 The 99% mostly finished unicorn. -- EDIT -- grabbed the wrong photo, this one also lacks the mane & tail highlighting. If I add the corrected photo it will screw up the order. Whoops :-) #2 I "built" this tree using things from the yard. I couldn't find one exactly the way I wanted, so I cut and glued in pieces until I had what I wanted. #3 A spray primered piece of floor tile for the base, with a framework for the hill I wanted. The hill bit is the cardboard from the middle of one of those drink carrier things, Gorilla glued onto the base. I used Gorilla glue rather than one of the other kinds for enhanced sturdiness throughout. #4 I didn't want too much green or too much brown for my ground cover, so I mixed some static grass with old coffee grounds. #5 Putty time! #6 The oil slick, aka black primer so I'd have a steady color under my grass. #7 Some steps along the way getting my ground cover in. #8 I covered up the unicorn because for the last step I wanted an extremely light dusting representing the first snow of the year, but I didn't want any on him. *** edit *** Have to do a second post with the finished product, ran out of allowable photos. Also I didn't get the steps above each photo, but I think ya'll can figure it out.

So I'm working on this guy as a gift, and I finally think I've twitched the purple on the body into something I like. For the most part, I also like the red in the mane, tail, and bottom of the legs. However, I am somehow hitting a brick wall when I try to think of what to use for bright highlights on the mane and tail. I don't think any of the reds will be contrast enough, I really don't want to go pink, and I'm hesitant to try yellow for fear it will look too much like flames. Should I use something really far off, like the Sophie silver I blended into the horn? Or something else? Suggestions please!

I used some of the suggestions on these forums to paint these. I first sprayed a clear matte sealer on (so the ink and paint will stick to the mini) then doused it in purple ink, then dry-brushed with 2 shades of pink (darker one and a lighter one) and then I hit them with a small amount of white. Still retains some of the translucent purple effect. Good for a Ghostbusters game.

Way back when Relic Knights was being Kickstarted, Sodapop miniatures introduced crossover characters for their already successful Super Dungeon Explore. I painted this guy up just a little while ago, but now, with the release of Ninja All Stars, I think he would fit nicely into a Ninja Themed Super Dungeon game. I went with a very controlled color pallet- keep a strong sense of light and dark among the purple, with a strongly contrasting NMM gold. I think the pallet worked well on him.

Had a discussion aa little while back at the FLGS's paint night about color theory and how wolves don't have to be brown or grey, they can be blue or PINK & PURPLE! So I decided to make an example and paint one of the Bones 77009: Werewolfs For added difficulty I did the entire mini in 1.5 hours, I used the package he came in as my palette and a $1 Size 4 Flat brush. The Punk Rock Pink didn't come out quite as bright as I wanted but I still like it. The claws were abysmal. Even if I had spent time cleaning up mold lines etc I think they would have been ugly. There was a spot of fur on the left leg that lost it's detail too. Would do the base darker if I did it again.

not sure I am totally happy with this one. Started with purple and green, took out the green,added brown and pewter esp on the back plates. I really liked the purple on the claws, but I am uncertain about the leg scales. perhaps I need to spend a month working on scales..... hmm basing.. he fits on a 3" base, mostly. any suggestions on this guy?

Painted up 77006: Great Worm after NomadZeke requested a nontraditional monster for the 2015 Summer exchange. (It's really fun, you should join) Been trying to work on more range in my shadows and highlights so I tried out the technique from How to Blend by olliekickflip. Still need a lot of practice but I call it a success. All of the shading was done only by starting with a white base and building up the paint.

Howdy, I'm currently working on a present for my wife. It is a conversion piece to look like Yvonne Craig's Batgirl from the original Batman TV series. I wanted to do something special for it (besides the sculpt) and have glittery or metallic purple paint for the costume. For those who may not know, her costume is very glittery (shown in the attachments). If anybody has any suggestions, I would be very appreciative. There is still sculpting work to be done, so I have time before I put the brush to the figure. Thanks!

I've been a long time lurker and haven't been really good about tracking my painting, but I figured it was time. My current project is a Reaper Bones Red Dragon. So far, I have most of the base coating down (sans base and claws). I've been attempting a bit of wet-blending on the wings, but I think they need more work. Looking at the picture, I also see some more mould lines that could use some work. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the progress. Colors used so far (my base is my darkest color): Body: Blood Red Wings: Dark Elf Skin triad Horns, teeth, etc: Bone Shadow Belly: Tanned Leather

A fellow player in a Reign of Winter game has been "tooling around"* with an unpainted strumpet miniature. I offered to paint it if she told me what she should look like, and so I was given an unpainted Bones mini and a quick watercolor sketch to work off of. This is the result, after a couple hours of work! Overall, I'm pretty happy with her! She is not great, but I'm improving. This is also some of my better work on hair, ever. That Jessica Rich DVD from the kickstarter is starting to pay off. However, I still did just a quick paint up (probably 2 hours...) and the quality needs to be higher. Things I know did not go as planned: The blending on the dress was incredibly subtle--not sure what I was thinking here, exactly, but the contrast should be way higher. The blending on the hair highlights looked so much better before it dried. Oops. So mental note: esp. for a display piece, let it dry and then really check it out before you seal it. The transitions are way too abrupt as it stands. General smoothness of blending everywhere could be improved. Still on broccoli base. Sad. Any additional C&C? Beyond the paint scheme, I suppose, since I'm working with a player's desired colors, anyway. * as the kids would say it ** ** back in the 50s, maybe... Note: this is a repost! It looks like three posts, two of which I finished writing, all ended up with the same post ID, which caused all sorts of mayhem. Attachments only worked on one of these posts at a time and it looks like all of the tags got thrown together. This should fix the problem...
