    Podcast Miniatures

So I finally had some free time today once I finished all my podcast duties. Hopefully this thread will continue for a while as I have to paint the 4 player characters and anything that happens to come between us and our goal. A majority of the miniatures will be from the original bones kickstarter, but some will be from other companies. First up is Garruk the half orc ranger of the party. I hadn't decided to do a WIP until I had already started working on some of the highlights. So he is a bit further along because of this. I'm happy overall with the skin tone. I think I may need to tone the leathered areas down and darken them up. Next up is Jonas the Oracle. Colors are mostly blocked in. The sections of blue have been highlighted up from blue ink to sapphire blue. I like the way the blue is looking so far and will be brightened up a bit more. Let me know what you guys think so far. C&C always welcome. If you want to check out the podcast you can find it Here. BONUS ROUND! I figured while I was posting I would put these pics up. These are from the Knights Models Arkham City line. Both need some finishing touches but they are definitely moving in the right direction (Which is off my paint table!).
  2. So, I promised to show off my Current Projects in the Fall Exchange Thread, so here goes nothing! So, first off, I have been having troubles with my Camera. It cannot seem to take non-fuzzy pics of minis consistently, even in macro mode. I took about 30 pictures of my current project minis...11 of those pics came out okay-ish. But at least one of every mini was included in those pics, so here are most of those. Project #1: Dragonborn Barbarian! Been playing Wednesday Night D&D stuff and have become friends with a couple of regulars. Both have been impressed with my painting "Skills", so I'm making minis for them. The First is playing a Dragonborn Barbarian with a fire/Volcanic flare. So, I took to my Plasticrack Chop-Shop, and created the Abomination above. And there he is with a coat of Primer and the first red Base coat on his scales. Project #2: The other Player at the Wed. Game Is fairly young, about 14-15 ish. He has come a long way though, especially since he decided to try playing a Dwarf Paladin. So, I'm making him a custom Mini. Again, I went to the Chop-Shop, but was a little more reserved this time. I chopped off the original Axe, added an Icy Warhammer from a D&D Mini and a Beer Stein I got at GenCon a few years ago at a Mini Class. Project #3: Diversify my Tieflings! And Finish old projects while I'm at it :P This Lady has been half finished for months. And Yes, the pink hair IS intentional. Project #4: Mari the Sniper Ranger. This one is for a PC in my F2F 4E D&D Campaign that I run on Saturdays. This mini is apparently Admiral Thrune from some Pathfinder Adventure done up for their Pre-Painted Minis. All I care about though is that this is a Female Human with a Crossbow! You would not think that would be something difficult to find, but you would be wrong. Original Paint job was in a kind of bright red. Looks very different in these colors. Anywho, Please comment. I live on Kind Words and Good Advice:) GF
  3. So I'm in the middle of working on 5 figures for my Pathfinder Group members, we are know collectively as The Queen's Hand. Stonehaven Gnomes (Mad Scientist & Thief) - Mr. Keen is the Alchemist and Shaddix is the mutated form, a single player uses both figures for his PC. It's a gnome alchemist who uses mutagens to change forms, so the Mad Scientist/Alchemist is the more reasonable half and the Thief/Mutated form is his crazy side. I'll be trying to add little bat wings to the Mad Scientist form as he's got those as a mutation as well. - EDIT - This character was made into a cohort, I'm still going to paint up the figures since I started on them, but the Alchemist will be following the orders of a new Priest of Asmodeus (below Hellknight). Alchemist form art inspiration Mutated form art inspiration Bard, Sandru Vhiski (Reaper) - Alexite is a Chaotic Evil Bard (Detective) is just loves to kill things and use subterfuge to do so. The figure is smiling, I'm going to attempt to use paint to make him look like he's sneering. I've also filed off his goatee and given him a cleft chin. Art inspiration Elf Ranger, Arthal Nightblade (Reaper) - Maloc is a human mercenary fighter (archer) from Mwangi (think Africa) who looks like Heimdall from Thor. I've already filed off his ear points to make him look more human. I'm also planning on giving him a tiny beard (but going to double check on that with the player first before I do so). Art inspiration Not shown - Hellknight who'll be joining us in a few weeks. I need to talk to the player and find out what that character will look like and find a figure for it. Obviously, he'll be the last thing I paint here. Still waiting on hearing back from the Player, will bug him again soon. Victus - Priest of Asmodeus, becoming the main character for the Player who also has the crazy Alchemist gnome. Need to find an appropriate figure for this guy. Art inspiration drawn by the Player himself All of these are evil characters who are part of the Queen's Hand, an elite squad that is on the hunt for a character who committed treason agains the crown. My previous figure (Tiefling Summoner) is the nominal leader of the group. Here are the first pics of the figures as I got them all cleaned up, primed, slathered black wash over them, and then a bit of dry-brushing of the white primer again to bring out some pre-highlights. Finding I like doing this more and more. Shaddix & Mr. Keen - Bard - Archer - Throughout this WIP thread, I'll be asking for some C&C to try to get these all looking good (err evil). So any and all would be greatly appreciated!
  4. Baugi

    Stonehaven Gnome Ranger

Second one down! Took a bit longer to create an interesting forest base (detailed in my basing thread in the conversions, terrain etc sub). Not at all happy with the eyes, but they were quite wonky depth-wise in the sculpt, and I didn't compensate very well. Pretty happy with him otherwise! Comments appreciated!
  5. Corporea

    Darksword Astral Ranger

So, I've been working on this fellow for about 3 months. He's the Darksword Ranger (with bow!) sculpted by Jeff Grace. He's a gorgeous figure, with a very expressive face. I loved painting him. The bird is Reaper's Hawk Familiar from Bones. I went to the Knoxville painting day last weekend, and Wren helped me figure out how to fix him up, so now I'm setting him free into the showoff forum! However, I'm taking him to Reapercon, so if anyone has any suggestions, please please let me know! I feel much better about the hair now! Enjoy! The Wip is located here in my running thread I sculpted everything except the 2 figures, mostly with sculpey, but a few details in greenstuff. Here are 2 close-ups of the ranger:

    Bones Heroes

So here are four Bones minis my D&D group picked out for PCs. I have to say I agree that the soft details make Bones less than ideal for PCs and important NPCs. Good for mooks and big monsters, though. Anyways, here they are. I need to get some Testors Dullcoat; my current matte spray is too shiney on Bones. Too bad this figure was discontinued; maybe we'll see it in metal. The details were quite soft on this figure, but it came out OK. I started out painting the cloth on this dwarf in blue, but then saw that was what every version in the gallery had. So purple. This one looks more indigo in person. I think my camera must have some setting to shift away from violet. Need to fix the staff, too.

    Aard's Adventures in Painting!

Woo! So, I finally got a camera, and I thought I'd upload some of my painted minis~ I'm gonna upload them in the order I did them, so I'll do the "Unicorn" first! Now, all of my mini's are painted in Marie's Artist's Acrylics - I get mine for 5$/box at Ocean State Job Lot. My paint brushes are these - they're cheap, they're tiny, and they move paint from the palette to the mini, which is all I really ask for in a brush. They last okay; I need to order new ones, and even 15 brushes don't last long, so I usually order 2-3 sets at a time - with free shipping, spending 5 or 6 dollars isn't that big a deal for 40-50 brushes, but they take up to 2 months to get here, a bit of a wait. Now, onto my figures! I've never painted minis before these - initially, I was looking for cheap minis for D&D on amazon, prepaints and such, and someone in the comments mentioned Reaper; I visited here, dropped a hundred bucks on some minis, and now I'm 800$ in the hole for KSII. Never gonna play D&D without minis again... they'll make my mats so much livelier. And of course, now I want to get into Hirst... but that's a matter for another thread! So I got my minis, and I was very happy. The first I decided to paint was a unicorn - my sister wanted to see a fire unicorn, and I thought, "I can do that!" So I did! HELLO, FRIENDS! Hello, unicorn! I started this one by basecoating... black, I think. Then I did the mane and tail; white, then yellow, followed by drybrushed red and orange, and with a dryer sort of drybrushing of black after. Then I made grey, and I added a little blue & brown - just the tiniest bit - and used that for the body. A slightly darker shade added the collarbone and the leg's shadow, and then I reblacked the hooves, eyes, teeth and horn... All in all, I think this one came out great! I plan to base it when the KSII bases get here; I want to do it rearing on a brownstone cliff in scrublands - something with a deep, dark red color, to give it a lot of contrast and make the mane pop! Here are some other pictures: The blur! THE BLUR! This picture shows off the mane really well, I think. The shading on the stomach, too. Next up: THE GRYPHON!

Three Bones and some bonus oldies

I painted up Horace Action Jackson (Bones 80023) up really quick (2 hours) as something different from Teronus the dragon. The NMM on the gun is the first time I have succesfully done steel NMM, yay. The white shirt was done to test the recipe for white (Reaper MSP Cloudy Gray, Misty Grey, Pure White) from paintdawg in this thread http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?/topic/52298-reapers-anima-tactics-and-one-ancient-ral-partha/ . I think it came out very nice, and will definitely use that recipe again. Maybe there are some Unicorns in my future. Fulumbar (Bones 77011) was started at the painting faces class at GenCon with Lyn Stahl (Thanks Lyn, I really enjoyed your class!). I finished him a while ago, but I hadn't gotten my photo setup out until now. Michelle (Bones 77022) is the one I like the least out of this bunch, the casting was a little flat in places, so I didn't spend a lot of time on her. At least she is fine for table-top, which is where most all my minis will end up. The picture actually looks better than the figure does in real life. That is a first. And last I will show off some mini's I painted 20+ years ago using Testors enamel. I am pretty sure all six are from Grenadiers Julie Guthrie lines:
  9. One of my friends commissioned me to paint this for her. It's a mini from Paizo.com, she picked it up at gencon a few years back. This Link will take you to where you can get one for yourself if you desire it. Stock photo: I cut off the base...toughest base I've ever cut off...took me almost a day at work. I rebased and added a log for decoration.

    Speed-Painted Bones 2-Wpn Ranger

This is a Bones figure I painted in about 2 hours for a D&D character. My goal was to get a decent-looking job done, and that's it. Nothing special. It is marketed in the Reaper Kickstarter as a "new Bones" figure. It looks just like Kellen, Nobleman Adventurer, but with a hood. I couldn't find an SKU for this exact figure, though, since it's not available yet.

    Another Bones Michelle

Still trying some original bones. Here's my take on Michelle. Not the best photos, but you can get the general idea.
  12. ShadowRaven

    Arthrand Nightblade 14553

My latest foray into building a tabletop army worthy of Lothlorien (yes, I Have a slight thing for Tolkien elves, and elves in general) I went with a fairly basic look for this guy. grey cloak to blend in, blue tabard to show a bit of elven 'class' and a very simple base As always, please comment and critique. Especially if you see something you feel I should work on for the next mini.
  13. Otherwise titled by my daughter as: Zombie Friends Are Bowling Together Dedicated to my awesome little girl. She loves Scooby Doo and is fascinated with all of my plastic D&D junk. Funny seeing things from a much younger point of view. 4 Reaper minis were painted for this. The 2 ghasts, the archway/crypt gate and the Hero ranger. A bit R rated...Hope you enjoy :)
  14. I've got some scenic bases in the mail so I wanted to experiment with them before I use them on my winter exchange. I chopped off Michelle's broccoli base with a hobby knife then decided to replace her wobbly weapons with metal ones. I didn't have two matching swords so she gets sword and dagger instead. The sword was SOOO easy to mod. I just chopped off the old one, drilled straight through her hand with a drillbit about 1 size too small. I then used the bendy nature of Bones to my benefit and just wiggled it in there and through. The sword is held entirely by her rubber-band hands - there's not a drop of glue. The dagger was slightly more problematic because it had a pommel that was quite a bit bigger than the grip. I had to cut off the pommel (and promptly lost it), so I glued the original pommel back on. The dagger is secure as well - it might have a little bit of glue, but it's mostly friction as well. There's something weird/wrong with her right eye. Anyone else have this problem? There's zero chance I can fix the sculpt without ruining it, and I probably can't do good enough paint plastic surgery, so she might get an eye patch, or magical jewel-eye or something.

    03500: Mason Thornwarden, Ranger

Finished this up this morning... this is number 6 or 7, i can definitely see improvement... I was going to use some midland tufts from GW but they have a really bad tendency to lift up... I'm going to try a different approach with them in the future that may work(will post later) really need to build a light box after i finish that paint rack... as always... lemme know what you think... always looking for c&c might help to add the pics
