  1. Ten of the 23 minis I’ve painted since my post in March. Monsters = tabletop Humanoids = above tabletop Sinisthreax (14634) is an ultra-complicated sculpt. He’s a noctiny (5e kobold press) recurring villain in my dnd game. You’ll note one eye is normal along with that side of his face. Silas (03010) the human cleric I wanted to dingy up with blood spatter. I imagine his name is Bret and he does not appreciate being called a heal-bot. The Dragonborn (Wizkids), half-orc (red box games) and deep gnome (Bones) are all new players in my dnd game which has grown from 3 players to 7 in rapid order. Narbaz is a tiefling from Red Box Games and I like the OSL I got from below, but not from the staff. I really just got sick of it and called it done.
  2. Tre manor is at it again... Another well-designed warband. Unfortunately, one of the minis is a bit... not-PG. So no pictures. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1103158358/warbands-of-the-dark-beyond/description
  3. I tried making them similar, yet dissimilar in a variety of small ways. They all have irregular freckles on the shoulders and upper arms, and I painted the horns light to dark, or dark to light.
  4. Tre Manor is still working to fulfill his Warbands of the Dark Beyond across the pond, but I painted up the zombies to be a higher grade of zombie for my dnd game. I got the chaos bases at ReaperCon and wanted them to look like they were fueled with necrotic energy further powering the zombies!!
  5. I think this is my favorite sculpt (at least top 5). I’ve had it for quite some time now but for whatever reason it never got to the front of the line. Recently I thought “what the hell” and put him into the paint queue. I have been struggling for quite some time with trying OSL. Every attempt ended with me calling it quits and discarding that element from the paint scheme. This is the second one that I decided to keep (the first one is the two skulls from the bones cultist circle). I’m really happy with the overall result.
  6. So I realized I only had one painted dwarf (!) when one of my GMs asked me if I had anything for the Jadeborn, a race in Exalted that is roughly equivalent to dwarves except for the 0.001% who are roughly equivalent to elves. And they are also sort of stone golems. Based on jade. I thought Reaper's 60184: Meyanda, Android Priestess, sculpted by Bobby Jackson, would do well for one of the elfy artisan Jadeborn and I pulled out a random assortment of seven (because of course) dwarves for the worker and warrior Jadeborn. All paints used are Golden Matte Fluid Acrylics. Color mixes are (usually) noted, but not exact ratios. Questions are welcomed and I will try to answer them. Critiques are appreciated. This is the way I usually start miniature figures: Lightly primed with Titanium White, then when that is dry, washing it over with Burnt Umber. Burnt Umber is a dark, transparent pigment that settles into crannies when thinned down and shows the details very well. It also gives a nice warm undertone to later paint layers. I left a few crystal and gem areas white so they will have more luminosity later. Left to right: Reaper 60184, Meyanda Android Priestess; Ral Partha; Hasslefree HFD014 Hatherley; Oathsworn Miniatures; Oathsworn Miniatures; Red Box Games; Stonehaven Miniatures; Reaper 14143: Kara Foehunter, Dwarf Hero Details: The Ral Partha dwarf is tiny!
  7. Friends! Here are 23 additional figures I painted in September. The results are largely for tabletop, or slightly better than tabletop quality. The Dreadmere Hunter was a free miniature at ReaperCon...I hated it but got it for my son, he loved it and his little 8-year-old heart decided that it was to be his DND ranger I also painted the Barrel Mimic which Galladoria Games gave away as a new attendee this year. I painted a DGS miniature named Jhenkar (a small version of the Neverending Story dragon). I also painted two Red Box Games miniatures, Derek the Dim and Hvitarnor (first time doing a 5-o'clock shadow). Lots of experimenting with TMM and NMM. Just having fun, trying things and enjoying making progress...
  8. Gudridr the Golden by RBG Sculpted by Tre Manor Hope everyone enjoys this one. This was a resin miniature from the kickstarter. The base is MDF that I cut in half with my scalpel then applied Greenstuff/Epoxy to and sculpted the brink pattern. The rocks on top are actual rocks and sand. FYI - because it's resin on an MDF base with greenstuff it's super light weight. I didn't like the idea of adding height to the miniature by just sculpting the brink on top of the standard MDF base. My solution is as you can see. I tired going simpler in the color scheme with this one and I think it turn out great.
  9. Frodwine the Young by Red Box Games Sculpted by Tre Manor I painted this one in an effort to cross two or three lines together; 1800 trapper, Final Fantasy wizard and Nordic(in terms of the way Tre Manor sculpted it). I wanted to try some OSL on this one so I went with making his eyes glow. I was "o.k" with the way it turned out. The base is a metal base from a set I got in the Box-of-goodwill a few boxes ago. I'm on a NMM kick right now so no TMM on this one. Over all I am luke-warm with out this turned out. The matte varnish (Vallejo) kind of glossed up for some reason when I sealed it... You live and learn. Hope you like it.
  10. Hvitrafn the Strange by Red Box Games Sculptor: Tre Manor Resin with a hand sculpted base. With this one I had to shave down an standard MDF circle base (from warsenal wargaming terrain). I didn't want the base to be too high off the standard but look more natural. I think it came out very well. Hope you guys and gals like it. Thanks for looking. C&C welcome. You can see the WIP here.
  11. Stared work on this guy finally! I sculpted the base myself. I really like that he is slight bending at the knees which made him standing on the stairs i made look more authentic. On to the painting! Texture is the name of the game from this weekend. GW: Vomit Brown (which is like a yellow brown) on the tunic. Several coats until I could not see grey from the primer. GW: Vomit Brown & Leather White (my favorite paint bottle ) [4:1] - To do some upper highlights on the all the raised areas. Dotting or Stippling with a Mixture: GW Vomit Brown mixed with Walnut brown. So the color was a little darker than the tunic's primary color. Then stippled or dotted with Walnut brown over THE ENTIRE THING. After that I did some diluted brown washes pushing into the recesses and some re-highlighting, re-shadowing, etc etc. The pants: Painted in Leather White highlighted in PURE White washed in Muddy Brown (which is a green brown.) The bag: Painted Royal Purple, highlighted with Leather white then washed in Muddy Brown
  12. A gallery dedicated to the random fantasy guys I finished while I was working on the other themed projects: A bunch of randos: Dolmen from Ganesha Games: A Hobgoblin Wizard, also from Ganesha Games: A Halfling Thief from Red Box Games: A Kraken Cult Leader from Midlam Miniatures:
  13. Rothmartyn of the DarkWold by RBG Sculpted by Tre Manor Quality: Table Top PLUS This piece is TT+ but it also has a more of a "reach" in it than a TT+. I attempted a more elaborate freehand with the cloak - which you can see on the WIP linked at the bottom. As well as I attempted NMM for the first time. Now let me give you some context on that last sentence. I typically do TMM (True Metallic Metals) and I do them in virtually the same manner but with the added benefit (IMHO) of having actual reflection while on the table. So yes this was my first execution of NMM successfully, it is not far from my normal. All in all I think it turned out well. The green blade as well is in NMM effect. For this piece I really wanted to ascent texture which I attempted on the tunic that is laying across his legs. And other bits and bobs. The face is pretty basic which is one of the reasons I didn't do a close up of it. RBG faces from this era are pretty small and the eyes are tiny. So tiny seeing a pupil and reflection mark would be... useless in my opinion. But I would say it turned out well. More personality than I thought I was going to give it. I was B+ satisfied with the cloak. I tried doing a suggestion @Darcstaar gave me but I think I executed it "o.k". I'll try again with another model. I attempted a few new things with this piece and I like how it turned out. Thank you all for your help and support. Would really enjoying your questions, comments and critiques on this. WORK IN PROGRESS: RBG: RothMartyn of the DarkWold
  14. Haven't had much time to take photo's of a WIP on the warband I've been working on but now that I'm done with them and can work on individual figures at time I figured I would show you guys what I'm working on. The cloak is painted in Monarch Purple then washed in Reaper Brown wash to dull itThis is done because of the free hand pattern I'm planning on putting on it I want to be subtle but noticeable. The horizontal lines on the cloak are done in Monarch purple. You can see how the brown wash really dulled the purple to make the original color pop a bit more. These are guidelines as the moment. To keep the coloration similar I did what I like to call a wash-invert. The brown is washed with a diluted Monarch Purple and the Purple is washed in Browns. And the browns look very purple in the photo but they are not that bad. The center armored tunic is paint VLJ German Grey then the recess' are washed in Gloss black. The Belt is painted in gloss black. This is really just surface stuff right now. I'm going to get into it this weekend. I got bored and had him primed while working on my warband and did some of his base.
  15. Surprised this hasn't made it here yet. Tre is at it again, this time with an Aenglish based warband. Sitting at 10 figures for $55. A full-figured female mage with her male apprentice, a female thief and 7 semi modular men-at-arms. End date is 8 days away (KS just went live yesterday), and he has several stretch goals planned. Just about funded now. Sorry for no picture, my work computer doesn't like to cough up links.
  16. Ase Arvidson from Red Box Games. Another miniature that had to suffer before I've settled (kind of) for a sealing method. Ase was a quick, and rather painless, paintjob. I have decided to try and speed up things (since I'm at the time of writing 229 finished miniatures short of having painted all my RBG minis....). This means having to settle for less (one sacrifice is way less time trying to paint eyes on small minis), but with how Ase turned out I'm quite OK with that. The original sculpt had a rather ugly arrow running down the leg, which I cut away and replaced with part of a metal paper clip. I'm not a sculpter so that's the best I could manage (I have since though about using needles but the paper clips are way cheaper :D).
  17. Once again I'm trying to pull myself out of a painting slump (this one stretching for most of the year). I recently attended my first paint workshop. While I mostly learned how much I have to learn, and that air brushes are pretty cool, I did rekindle some of my desire to paint. And in an atempt to keep it going until the holiday break I thought I'd try a WIP thread. I've been holding on to the brigands from Red Box Game for some time now... so no time like the present. First up (actually second...) is Smarty Sean. And his hood going from highlighted then shaded (first pic) to mostly done for now. And the first miniature is Burt the Brash (but I didn't take any pictures until now). So here he is with his face and hood done for now. Next will be the tunic I think.
  18. So I was asked for a group shot of my Tre Manor / Red Box Games Warband.... Links to the individual Show offs: Ejrvindr the Far Seeing & Dagrun Arnholdt'sdottir Hawkeyed Arvid & Pretty Laerke Red Gunhildr & Little Svein Swiftfoot Njorn thugs The show offs should all have links to the Wips.... The building is from Games Workshop 40K, The Imperial City Box Set, Circa 2003? (Do you folks thing it works ok as Frostgrave terrain?) Thanks for looking!
  19. So my warband is complete! The snow effect is still drying as I took these pics, but I don't expect it to change to much.... (I will need to go around the bases with Black paint to cover the water effect smears....) Thanks to all those that followed along in the WiP! Can't wait to play a game now...... WiP here
  20. So I put the Secret Weapon Crushed Glass Snow effects on their bases, and here they are, Ejrvindr the Far Seeing and his apprentice, Dagrun Arnholdt'sdottir... Thanks for looking! Comments and Critiques Welcome! George WiP found Here
  21. So these 2 got their Secret Weapon Crushed Glass Snow, and I am calling them done! Hawkeyed Arvid Pretty Laerke Couple of minor touch ups to do with the bases, but.... Thanks for looking and following along! WiP here George
  22. These 2 also got their Secret Weapon Crushed Glass Snow, and, Barring some base touch ups, are Done! Red Gunhildr Little Svein Swiftfoot Thanks for following along and Looking! WiP here Now on to the thugs and the warband will be done! (for now...)
  23. So I did not get these guys during the kickstarter, thinking that the guys with the shields would be more appropriate for Frostgrave, as I did NOT have the rule book at the time.... OOPS.... So I got them later, when I found out that the Njorn Hirdmen were a LOT more expensive! Another batch of things primed to start base coating at paint day tomorrow! These guys come in 4 parts, heads, bodies, right and left hands / weapons. Kind of fiddly assembly, and some green stuff gap filling required..... Thanks for looking!
  24. Pretty Laerke by RBG Sculpted by Tre Manor This archer was an absolute joy to paint. From the moment I saw her I saw a red head. Probably highly influenced by Brave but oh well. I wanted to do some free hand on her under tunic but I could not decide on it so I left it. The base is hand sculpted too. I have a resin one from RBG coming in soon and I'm thinking of doing it as her sister and make her standing on a similar base maybe a different type of red hair. Not sure yet. Enjoy!
  25. Njorn Thugs by RBG Sculpted by Tre Manor Here we have the Thugs from the Njorn character set. I really liked painting these guys. Very dynamic and interested. They had a wide variety in their weapons and poses. Continuing with my new Object Source Lighting (OSL) I painted up a solider with a torch in his hand. It turned out much better than I had thought I was going to do. Additionally, I did a blue glaze on the spearmans metallic's to get a more realistic look. First time I've really done that too. To me... It looks pretty good. I will probably try it out on all of my weapons and armors again. That's about it. I hope you enjoy this. Thank you for stopping by. Click the image to see it a bit larger. :) Close up of the Torch guy solider.
