Ok, this isn't a New year's resolution ( I don't make those), but I have decided that I need to get over the "I'm not good enough" thing and try to push myself to paint all those figures that I've been saving for 'some day'. That day is NOW. I grabbed this figure during a Black Friday sale for something like 4 or 5 bucks. Depending on where you get it from, it's usually more like 30. It's 28mm scale, but it stands pretty tall; I'm guessing it's 54mm tall or thereabouts. I'll get a proper picture with Sir Forscale a little bit later on. I'd like you to help push me to do my absolute best with this guy, please. If you think something looks good, cool, tell me that. By the same token, if you think something doesn't look good, tell me that, too. I want you guys to 'break out the red pen' as Cyradis would say. For reference, this is the figure I'm talking about (picture from the WWW, not my figure).

This is Kassata Lewynn, sculpted by Julie Guthrie. The base is resin, from Celtic Ruins pack BRCE0043, by Scibor Miniatures. I love this sculpt and I love the way she turned out. However, I had a lot of little problems that surprised me when painting her. Somehow I managed to drop her at least five times while working on her. I had to put a sheet of foam under where I was working to prevent further damage. This has not happened to me before, so it was quite frustrating. Each time, there were little white dings in the paint in the middle of spots where I was blending that required multiple layers re-painted to fix the damage. I think I found and fixed most of them. As I was painting her hair, the paint started drying in a completely different way. It started snowing, so maybe it was the change in weather. When I did the brown layer, the paint flowed very smoothly. Part way through painting the first highlight layer, the paint started drying almost immediately. I am using a #3 Raphael 8404, and it would dry out to the point of no paint flowing within a few seconds. None of the usual tricks seemed to work (more thinning, flow aid). It ended up being almost dry brushing, which is why the highlights in her hair look so chalky. I noticed a tiny dark spot on her left collar and thought I had dabbed black paint by mistake. I blended the brown over it several times and it just wouldn't cover over. Then I figured it out -- there was a hole in her collar all the way through to her shoulder. A lot of the paint I was applying to cover what I thought was a spot of dark paint was actually wicking through the collar and coming out on the underside. You can see the dark spot in the top picture right below her chin. It could have been fixed with a spot of glaze but I decided to leave it. Maybe she had a near miss with an arrow at some point. Her face turned out to be exceptionally difficult for me to paint. Her eyes have sculpted texture that I found made it very difficult for me to place the irises. That's why the eye placement looks a little off. Plus, I somehow managed to paint slightly triangular blobs with narrow point upwards instead of circles. That is contributing to her slightly cross-eyed appearance. If I paint this miniature again in future, I will probably try to smooth the surfaces of the eyes to make it easier to make them symmetrical. Her lips also have a shape that I found very challenging. There are cute little dimples at each corner of her mouth which give her a nice smile. I found that if I had the paint thinned enough to paint her lips, the paint was also thin enough to immediately wick into these dimples, which significantly magnified the apparent size of her mouth. I tried repeatedly to paint her lips smoothly, but I had to paint it over and start again each time. I originally started with a less bright red for her lips, keeping in with the overall milder colour scheme, but the darker red didn't flow into the dimples so that's what she has. Correcting this each time had an impact on the blending of the flesh tones on her face, which is why there looks like there is a sharp brush line down the middle of her right cheek. That's where I gave up trying to fix the blending. I think if I did this miniature again, I would paint the shade tone of the flesh colour into the dimples, and then fill them in with glazing medium. That way I might still get the nice smile, but not have to fight with the wicking effect on the lip colour. I also misjudged the overall skin tone. I used the Reaper fair skin triad with a very slight darkening of the fair skin shadow as the darkest shade and brightened the fair skin highlight with white. I think the whole series turned out to be too light and as a result there doesn't appear to be much shape to her face when viewed from a distance. I should have started with a darker shade overall, maybe by adding a mid-range brown to the darkest shade colours for her skin to increase the contrast. I created the gem on her right bracer by filling in the rune shape that was there with glaze. I like the way the gem turned out and the colour, but I shouldn't have outlined the gem shape with black. I think I should probably used the a darker version of the shade colour I used on the bracer, which was a mixture of nightshade purple and bronzed shadow (from the bronzed flesh triad). The gem would have still been nicely framed, but the black is just too stark and didn't turn out very smooth. It might look better if I had been able to make the black margin narrower and rounder. Anyway, if anyone has any feedback to share about this model, I would love to hear it. Thanks, Geoff

For the January/February RPChallenge, one of the bonus challenges was: I immediately knew what figure I was going to use but unfortunately she caused me quite a lot of trouble, especially her wings. Fortunately, Jessica Rich very kindly helped me out with some great advice and thus released me from my downward spiral. The base is by Scibor miniatures and was a lot of fun to paint. I've been very pleased with every resin piece I've ever gotten from Scibor and this was no exception. There weren't even any mold lines to clean up. Anyway, I hope y'all like her! (Pics are a little washed out...I probably should've used a darker background. Oh well. .....and I just realized that the jar she's sitting on looks like it's part of the base....it's not, I just should've put the jar under the background fabric. I just paint things, man, I'm not a professional photographer. )

This wonderful set was a gift to me from a good friend of mine and they were very fun to paint. Only annoying thing is their bases are really rather beautiful but of course as soon as you put the dwarf on it you can't see any of that detail anymore. So this is the second one of these Scibor ornaments that I've painted. I started him before Christmas to have something to post for my daily painting challenge on facebook so that my mother wouldn't see what ended up being her Christmas present. As a result, I was painting it for too long and got to the point where I just wanted to be done with it, so it's rougher in some spots than I would normally like to leave, but, eh, gotta move on. The skin got away from me... I don't think the highlights are too bright, but I do think that I made them too large so his skin ends up looking stripey instead of highlighted. Anyway, C&C very very welcome, as always!

Well it has been three weeks since I last picked up a brush though I did work on some bases, so I figured it was time to start a new WIP. This will be covering more than a few miniatures that want to get done this summer, preferably before I go on vacation in August. First up is Onufry the Ribald, a 54mm from Scibor. This guy is just for fun and I probably will enter him in a competition. I debated between doing a display base or using the one he came with. In the end I made one with some bark, a slate piece, a resin scenery dwarf head, and a resin tree trunk. I am really happy with it. Next we have one of my planned entries for ReaperCon, Dark Sword's Wood Elf Goddess that was their freebie at last year's RCon. I am hoping to paint each year's DS mini up for the following year. She is going to be based among ruins of building in the forest which is right now just the walls on some cork. There will be a tree in the corner and lots of greenery. Basically the forest reclaiming the area. Then I hope to finish my Zayna from Ares Mythologic's Draconia line. She was started last year but kept getting pushed aside. She is also destined for RCon. Another fun one I hope to work on is Reaper's Blightfang which I am doing as a purple/blue dragon. I have just started the base which will be a forest pond. Lastly we have Kabuki's The Hunter. Not much planned for her yet except I plan on keeping it simple. Her legs are so thin I did not want risk removing the base piece that she is on so I evened out part of a Secret Weapon base and now she will be standing on a rook in the swamp. I know not much has been done yet but any input would be appreciated.

More from the Memorial Day paint binge challenge. These are made by Scibor and I thought they were cool just by themselves. I painted them up to use as scatter terrain or objective markers. The bases are 1" square.

So this is a base that I am posting because I think it has so much detail it deserves a showing before a mini goes onto it, it's a 40mm and I am amazed at the detail.

Today I output the dwarves ("Dwarves Veterans" by Scibor) What I like about them is that they're bulky and (almost power-)armoured like an army from under the mountain should look like, yet still fitting into a fantasy plot. I was a bit worried about all the ornamental details on them but these chubby little tin cans practically paint themselves: sorry for the bad photo

I was doing home remodeling and was self-exiled from my home and paint desk for over two months, so when I got access to my hobby room and paint desk and reorganized, I collected all my unfinished projects on the desk and realized my shelf of shame had grown to unacceptable proportions. I decided to tackle finishing as many of these pieces just to get them off my desk before I move on, even if I speed paint them or cut steps, but I am tired of looking at too many primed-only or part painted minis. So here is the first wave: Mashaaf which was my favorite to paint among these, the bones mummy lich I had nearly finished six months ago, which was nice except had too soft details on the face, the Scibor elven ruins, Mega Miniatures pack mules I base coated two years ago, and some GriffinTamer terrain pieces. These are not my best work by far but I'm going to call them done for now to get them off my desk and maybe some day I will go back and add some more finishing touches.

My Iron Kingdoms RPG group sometimes can’t hold back. When we saw that Borka: Vengeance of the Rimshaws was riding a polar bear… well, we had to figure out how that might work for us. Luckily, we have a very good GM who is willing to make up some rules in the name of Awesome. And then it fell to me to create some awesome minis featuring our heroes riding bears. I grabbed a couple bears from Scibor (they’re very large) and put a couple of Reaper Bones minis on them- then did a lot of sculpting. I'm maintaining two personal WIP's on purpose. I want to keep my Reaper Projects together in one place. Mainly because this is a Reaper Forum and I want to be certain that the balance of my work favours Reaper. This is the quickest way for me and for them to know that. Secondly, I hate clutter. A single catch all WIP will drive me bonkers because it will become crowded up with too many projects. PROJECT #1 Stonehaven Gnomes Priestess Page 1 I'm finally getting round to painting up my Heroe's of Sprocketshire Gnomes from Stonehaven. These are so terribly cute, I just love them and now wish I had gotten the entire collection. I have Sprocketshire and McKrakken's Glory Squad. First up is the Priestess from Heroes of Sprocketshire. I can't find her name in the Character Bio sheet, so I'll name her when she's done. The basing and my whole approach to these figures is based on the work I've seen done by fellow forum member Catdancer. I've been inspired by his work since I came here and I hope to achieve something approaching his work. At the very least, I would hope they "sing" in a voice he would recognize. She is almost there, but she needs a bit more work. More highlighting is needed on her boots, the gem needs more work and there needs to be more contrast on the stone she is standing on (which is made from a piece of garden mulch). Also I think I need to add a very, very tiny bit of flower to cover the stems of the mushrooms. This will be difficult as I make them from the heads of a pin and they are quite tiny. Further, I feel the base is still lacking some indefinable something. It's just "off" and I know it's not "there" yet. I will have to let it percolate a bit and see what I can come up with. I like these so well, I could paint an army of them and just might do so when they become available in the online store.

With all these great looking miniatures being posted, I thought I'd show off the other end of the spectrum with my latest beginner level dwarf :) I got some feedback on my last mini that I neglected the metallics, so I tried to do a little better this time. C&C welcome!

Ok, I'm calling this guy done. This is my second mini in 20 years, it's not the greatest but I like him. Thought I would try doing a WIP for this Scibor Monstrous Miniatures dwarf I'm painting. (I really like their dwarves) I started with the face using the MSP tanned skin triad going dark to light. I tried adding some white for the final highlights on his face and noticed he was starting to sparkle. My guess is pearl white is not a good white to use. I painted over the sparkly bits since this dwarf isnt going to be an angsty teen vampire and called it quits on the face, I'll finish that at the end. Next I base coated his gambeson in Terran khaki, intending to shade and highlight with khaki shadow and khaki highlight. Then I got a great idea to just use a wash to get in all the folds. I'm not too happy with the way the wash turned out. That's it for the first session. Next time I'm going to see if I can fix the gambeson, finish base coating, do a little lining, then try to make him look pretty. Suggestions welcomed! .

So while I was waiting for the green stuff on Archie to cure I was bored and started work on... wait for it... Woody! Wood Elf Mage another from Scibor and I gotta say that I relly like a lot of the detail their resin minis... what I don't care for is the level of finish they have when they leave the factory. lots of molding lines, and voids that need to be cleared of extraneious material. This one wasn't so bad but Archie's wings alone took me forever. Anyway... I got to work on this...

So I decided on my next project...a mini from scibor that I had to have as soon as I saw it... mostly.. the product can be found here but i can tell you now there is no way I'm painting it to look like that. I mean the paint job is really good quality but way to much goldy gold for me. Not sure how hell turn out yet, as you can see I am in the process of stripping my attempt at pearlescent armor and the primer off. I've also included the accompanying wings, base and head. (sorry for the depth of field issues...i'm using a close up filter and still getting the hang of it) Here you can see the wings that came with, but, and i mean no disrespect to the sculptor, the wings don't look that great to me... I might try to find a pair that look more anatomically correct like these for example. Really don't think the included ones will make it onto the final piece. I love this base but for some reason it doesn't strike me as a good match for the mini... I am going to try to scratch build something (wish me luck, it will be a first) And here we have the poor schmuck who stood in the way of my kickstarter pledge manager :) I will try to take photos periodically between sessions. but I plan to take this one slowly...
