  1. Awhile ago I came across three Tau Pathfinders in a bits box at my local shop. Seeing as they were only a couple bucks apiece my mind quickly started thinking of all the things I could do. Having made a squad of Tau defectors some time ago I figured I was overdue to do something weird again. And wouldn't you know it but inspiration hit me before I'd even bought them. Odder still after having them all this time my idea never changed. Having read the title you can already guess where I'm going but there is more to it. Tau painted up as the Ninja Turtles combined just a bit with the Star Wars Republic Commandos (Sev, Boss, Fixer, and Scorch). I know that may sound odd but hear me out. The Republic commandos all combine a single signature color with their typical white armor. Now I'm no expert on the Tau but I know I've seen more than a few similar color schemes. Why not give it a try and see what happens? So when I first conceived of this idea I didn't do much. All I actually did was remove the figures from their bases, add some greenstuff, stamp the greenstuff, and return the figures to their "new" bases. This might actually be the first time I used my Happy Seppuku stamp but I can't remember. It came out a little rough I thought but certainly passable. The figures then basically kicked around my desk for a few months until tonight. Jumping right in I started blocking out colors attempting to lock in a scheme. They ended up skewing closer to TMNT than Republic Commando but this will be remedied. Looking at my reference photos I believe the Republic Commando inspiration will become apparent when I add their signature colors.
  2. I painted my first Kroot model. Very fun! I wasn't sure what color the skin should be, so I just went with a color I thought could blend in to many scenic areas. In this case I picked him for desert. He stands out enough but also ties into the environment. Open to feedback here. Adding this in case you want the colors used.
  3. Hey all, Mods if this is not acceptable please feel free to delete. I started a new project. last week. I bought the mini at a game store that I go to to paint with Ludo. I had another friend give me more minis... so I am turning this what was going to be just the one, into an army. I am still working on this one, but I thought you all might like to see it. Anyways here is the Commander:
  4. I've been teasing this project way longer than I should have. I honestly just kept forgetting to pick up some lasguns. Really that's all that delayed this project for so long. But before we jump into it I figured I'd give a little context to the project. As the lore says some humans have defected leaving the Imperium of man and joining the Tau. Though I don't know a ton of Tau players every one I have met has at least one unit of human defectors in their army. My friend is no exception to this, but as I play Guard exclusively he really likes to point them out every chance he gets. I had no plans whatsoever to fight fire with fire, at least on this particular joke. I was content to let him have this one as I always had my "Fabulous" squad and segways on the field whenever I played him(and I can happily report that both squads tend to do really well against him). The bits bin however had other plans. A few months before my wife and I found a house and subsequently moved I came across a squad of Tau for about eight bucks. They were fully assembled save their arms, but all the neccessary parts were there. I originally picked them up as a gift for my friend, a potential trade, or for something new to paint. I really didn't have a specific idea for them and for that reason they remained tucked away in my desk. As I was just figuring out if my next Guardsmen project would be a squad of PDF or a big batch of conscripts it hit me. What about a Tau prisoner squad? At first I liked the idea as it was basically the same concept with just that little twist. It certainly fit the lore better than Tau defecting to the Imperium. It also seemed way more likely the Imperium would utilize them in that way. I could already hear my friends jokes however as they'd only be fighting on my side because they were forced to. So ignoring the lore and logic I went with regular defectors instead. First up I had to equip them with lasguns. I'll admit I thought about how to do that way longer than was necessary. There are indeed many ways to do it, but I figured the easiest way was to simply cut their regular guns just beyond where the hands held them. Then all I had to do was glue a lasgun to it, greenstuff the seams and call it a day. It wouldn't look amazing but it would suffice. It'd also give me a chance to practice with greenstuff. It did cause another problem however. Most of the secondary arms were designed to cradle the bottom of their guns. Their cupped hands didn't exactly fit the bulkier lasguns. They were perfect for holding grenades however. Well here they are primed and ready to paint. I'm not very good when it comes to green stuff but I'm hoping a paintjob might be able to hide some of the flaws. I know there are only nine, but I plan to take them with a regular Guard sergeant. They may be defectors but someone has to watch them.
  5. Here are some Tau (or T'au) killteam members I painted them up for my hubby so he and I can play :D
  6. So I've had a Tau force since the large scale Armageddon event/stuff pretty much happened a good ten years ago, and it's been in a state of "left on the side in the boxes" for a while now.... While I'd love to wrap up my Catachans first, I wound up starting on the Tau simply because I had a few ideas for them come to mind and figured I'd give it a go, and hopefully come up with a cohesive colouration by the time it's all said and done Most of the assembled minis were spray primered in black years ago, and I'm not really a fan of black as my primer anymore (I switched to light grey a while after these guys were primered), so first order of business was to give them a new base coat consisting of two parts white brush on primer, and one part grey liner. The next coat consisted of lava orange (for the orange bits), and then an equal 1:1:1 of Mountain Stone, Terran Khaki, and Desert Sand for the second colour. Sadly, I totally forgot what I did for the "boots", but odds are I'll be changing that colour up as I'm not all the happiest with it at the moment. I also used Ebony Flesh for some quick lining, but I'm still indecisive about my thoughts on such. Follow up coat for the orange was two parts lava orange, one part Dragon Red, and I think it was four drops of water... That's not quite where things are right now though.... They're definitely in the "ugly" stage, since I decided I would experiment with, of all things, a complete wash coat made of Pure Black and about six drops of water... While I did wind up losing a good amount of that gorgeously bright orange, I'm kind of liking how it has this almost "faded off in the sun" burnt feel to it... Next time though I'm going to be more careful about it's application, because wow there's a decent amount of cleanup in some areas. I like how the pants came out though ^_^;;;; I'll have more pics later today, wasn't able to get pics off the G85 with enough time to edit them
  7. So the theme of today is "Does SigmaOne need a highlighting intervention?" I started this guy a couple of weeks ago, mostly because I didn't care about the figure that much (at first) and I haven't done a mini in a while, so I wanted something to brush-up with. Now I care enough that I want it too look decent. The skin is (was?) intended to be complete, aside from cleaning up its border. I felt pretty good about the highlighting and shading of the skin the day I did it. Coming back to it two weeks later I see a few things that certainly should be touched up, but I'm wondering whether or not it works at all. I'd be happy for any gentle advice. Now that I've got some pigments on it, I think this is a sculpt with a ton of character, and I like it quite a bit. I hope I can do it some justice. I wish my skills were commensurate with my standards, one way or the other. Thanks for looking.
  8. This is a sad story, kind of... About 4 years ago I was just getting into Warhammer 40k and I was the Tau army... I decided to make a piece of terrain I could (justifiably) put in almost every scenario as a fall back point. The story behind it was that the Tau would drop it from orbit and would automatically provide cover and intel., etc. Its was only allow in large scale skirmishes - counting as points in my army. Worked great, I could fall back behind it and shoot through the one way windows and it had a drone that could detach from it and follow around if things got too harry. Alas, I never finished it, what you see here is the last of it... I had to sell it... But I hope it inspires somebody! Materials: A vitamin bottle, a cap to a pill bottle, top half of an antenna, a paper clip, sand, rocks, left over spurs, left over tau mech command antenna's, and Green Stuff. I acutally carved out a Spur pole to fit and entire rack of guns. Above is a place for pistols. Here is the War Map and the concept I had in mind. To the right is a helmet. I actually took a Tau head and carved it out so it looked liked a Commander took his helmet off and placed it there. Took forever to carver it out! I hope you have enjoyed my blast from the past! I THOROUGHLY enjoyed making this. Wish I had some pictures of my Cardboard City stuff I made.
  9. First post here, started painting my new (GW) Tau army while I wait for my bones. Took me a while to figure out a color scheme I liked, sticking to this one, though I might play a little with the color of the backpack. Its tabletop quality :) What do you guys think?
  10. This is another friend request. He asked me to paint these (3) figures (wizards, I guess???) for his Tau Empire (Warhammer 40K). He requested the "high gloss" finish. He was happy with the results. I still don't have any clue as to who/what Tau are!!!
