  1. Time for the next in line for Bones I. Aina, Female Valkyrie. I will paint the metal version concurrently. I already pinned the weapon hand on the metal version, and pinned the arm for the shield. I’ll apply the shield later. The Bones version still has a ton of detail, so I suspect these will take a while. Planning Red/Gold for metal version (her shield is a little Romanesque), and Blue/White for the Bones version.
  2. Her face is way lighter in real life. In the pics she looks like she's got stubble...
  3. Hi Here's a couple of my recent mini's. Both of them are them are metal. I modified Eando to have a Halberd, which I made using weapons from the Crusaders weapons pack. I used a hobby knife to cut his hand away from his thigh, then used epoxy to try to recreate part of his hand. I added a gladius style sword to the Valkyrie, i added it to be back side because I didn't want it interfering with the shield hand, But in retrospect I think I could have added it to her left hip instead.Unfortunately I took the 3rd pic later, and it suffers from poor lighting. I tried to shade both these mini's to have opposing light and dark edges on their weapons, which is kind of visible in the pictures.
  4. Since I want to bring a Bombshell mini to Reapercon, and Glacia isn't movin' my Mojo atm, I started on Geirahod... Eyes are GW Scorched Brown, MSP Linen White, and Scale 75 Tesla Blue Skin is Arabic Shadow, which seems to be my new favorite skin tone base coat.... Got the Blues in her eyes with one try..... (Will never happen again...) I found it interesting that the details of her face don't show up well in the pic on the Bombshell site... They look very soft in that pic, to me anyway... Comments and Critiques welcome!
  5. I painted up another trio of Talisman minis, this time from the Highland expansion. The first one is the Valkyrie. I chose her first because I have always liked Valkyries, and she had some nice art: She didn't turn out great, though she does look pretty good at table level. I'm pretty happy with the hair and cloak at least. Next is the Vampiress. I picked her because a player really wanted to use a vampire. I did not have high hopes, because even though it is some nice concept art, the colours looked like they would be hard to capture. I wasn't wrong: She looks terrible up close. However, she does look good on the board, so she gets the job done. You can tell I was disappointed in them, since I forgot to add my typical grass markings to the base. After a couple lousy paint jobs I wanted to move on to the next mini as a palate cleanse. Unfortunately, I broke my glasses the next day. So I had a forced break of a couple weeks while I got my eyes examined and a new pair of glasses. On the plus side, i did get a new phone, so I have a better camera. Yesterday I started the Highlander: He was looking half decent, so I actually stopped short of trying to paint the tartan and took some photos just in case it turned out terrible. However, the pattern turned out okay. It's the best freehand I've ever done, so I'm very happy with him. The face isn't great, but that's partially the mini and partially the size. I need to get more practice with the new camera. Even though the quality is clearly better, the phone focuses on the base, so that the head is a little out of focus. Also, the pics are way too bright, you can't even see the khaki in his shirt. I took a shot with him and the Stonehaven Dwarf I painted up recently, he looks tiny next to the Dwarf.
  6. Hello, I used to paint Games Workshop miniatures when I was a kid, but was put off for many years by the price. Having found out about Reaper recently I decided to get back into it. I picked up the Learn to Paint Kit, a few extra Reaper miniatures and some extra paints/brushes. The valkyrie I have attached was my first attempt after a long break, and now I am getting onto the mouslings. I am having some difficulties though. I would love to hear any feedback on these difficulties I list or any other criticism or advice. With the valkyrie there are some parts I am quite happy with. Her right eye was never great, and has got messed up a bit somehow (I am dreading fixing it, maybe I should get some greenstuff and fashion an eyepatch?). Also her face has a kind of chalky look to it that I don't know how to avoid. I didn't have any gold paint, so I tried to do her armor as leather with metal features. On the chest that seems to have gone quite badly. For the hair I think it could do with more "depth" but I am having trouble working out how to achieve that. Her base I am actually quite happy with (in contrast to the other miniatures). As cliched as it is, I was going for an "evil albino" look with the mousling assassin. Having looked again at the stock photo in the store I may try to put some of the caucasian flesh colour I have on his nose. I had tried mixing up a pink before but it looked way too "valentines day". His eyes are also looking pretty flat, and I'm also having some trouble making his fur look "furry". The bases on these mouslings (and some other miniatures I have) have been a real challenge to get looking right. Recently I have been trying basecoating with shadowed stone, washing with brown liner, and highlighting with leather brown, but whatever I do I can't get it where I'm happy with it. I decided to do the druid more as a wizard (I bought a trio of reds for a dragon I am holding off on painting so I want to use those). I have had issues painting the orb in his staff (I want it to have some sort of blue mystical look). I was having problems with the colour of the staff or the orb flowing into the crevice between them and looking bad, so I did a sort of outline with diluted brown liner and now plan to paint the orb "up to" the edge without the paint flowing into it. I am happy with his eyes, but his fur is also a struggle. I was going for "black mouse" though I then switched to "dark grey mouse" so I could try to get some shading in. The thief and beekeeper I am really just basecoating for now (I include them here so I can follow up with them later). I had some trouble with the pale saffron yellow being weird, but I think it just required far more shaking than I was giving it. Thank you for reading.
  7. The girl next door requested a dragon for her birthday, after she saw me give one to somebody else. I really hate giving away miniatures, because I feel my painting is not good enough for displaying to random people. But.. What can you do? :P Soo.. I figured I'd give it a go. Been working on these two on and off since yesterday evening: Based one black, the other white: The Valkyrie stood very low, so I sculpted a stand for her with a cork and some Fimo: Didn't fit perfectly with the ridges, but I think I can get away with it as a whole: And this is just about how it stands at the moment: I'd happily take some advice on base clutter. Something to make it more interesting.. I figured I'd just add some stones?
  8. Painted this for a friends' birthday. The miniature is going to be part of a small diorama, fending off a dragon.
  9. My take on Bones Aina, Painted last year. I tried a freehand on the shield supposed to look like a seaserpent thingy. EDIT : took some better pics.
  10. Sheesh, I started this figure back on June 15. Almost three months later, I can call her complete. The basing was the most daunting part. I read through Baugi's post and watched a bunch of youtube videos. But in the end, one just has to try it. Base: 1 inch metal washer Materials: Cork and generous application of ceramic stucco. Paints: Going to delegate craft paints terrain from now on. I used almost 12 drops of muddy brown and watched it get sucked in by the stucco and cork. Oops. Concrete grey and a mixture of concrete grey + white linen for highlights. Valkyrie: Went for simple colors. I was playing around with the metal parts, hence the weird painting on the shield, helmet, and sword.
  11. A little background first. Back at the beginning of June I was approached by an employee of my FLGS with a "Hey I hear you paint miniatures, want to enter our contest?" Well at first I was not going to as the deadline was less then two weeks away, I had other ones I needed to work on, and as your entry fee, you needed to buy a miniature from the store (problem since I have too many as it is). But I wanted to support the store so I made a list of Bones that I want to paint and out of the about ten that I choose, this was the only one they had. Well I got it done on time and was the first to turn in. The deadline got extended twice to try to get more entries but we only ended up with three and we got the results yesterday. I won! So here is Aina the Female Valkyrie. I wanted to work on pushing my shadows and highlights and her skirt was perfect for this but I still could have gone darker with the shadows. I also needed to try out the RMSP Red Hair triad and I am happy with the results. I had a little accident when cleaning up the sword and ended up needing to use brown stuff to rebuild it and was semi successful. The base is a block of wood from Michaels with one corner burned off and rocks made of Super Sculpey. Any input would be appreciated.
