  1. My starting warband for Mordheim is finally done! Hope you like them!
  2. Hi, I plan on trying out warhammer in the future and I accidentally have enough orc minis to make a 50 renown skirmish warband. So, here they are: 6 savages, 7 archers, and a avatars of war orc shaman resin copy I plan on using as an wierdnob shaman (leader of the group) that needs to be based. I plan on putting some rocks, sand and grass on their bases, and then giving them a nice paintjob. I have never painted a "unit" or an army before, and I would be super thankful for any tips or suggestions that you might have for me before I even start, so please feel free to post them! :D This whole project might take and I will post all updates in this topic. Cheers and Waaaaagh!
  3. So I received my Harwood Hobbies cultists miniatures. I decided to try and make a warband out of them:[spoiler photo to come] Mr Karswell: Sigilist Ritual Leader: Apprentice 3 axe cultists+ executioner=melee/thugs the enforcer (w/ machinegun)= ranged I have a few more slots, so I'll need to see what other cultist minis I have, and whether they fit. Maybe I'll add Bones 3 cultists, or my Crooked Dice cultists I suppose I may choose some other school than sigilist, it's just that with the spellbooks, they LOOK like sigilists. I wish summoning weren't an opposed school, however. And also, just in case, I'll be doing a 2 priest setup as well, they make more sense as sigiists (also with books) leaving the cultists as a summoner warband.
  4. Have painted up some half orcs. They are from Mark Copplestone, who made them for Grenadier Games many years ago. They are still in print from 2 or 3 different small sellers. I used Vallejo leather brown Air primer (with a brush though) and Army Painter Strong tone. This covered the whole mini and made the process of highlighting and building up the base coats much quicker.
  5. I batch painted these guys, they were just begging to be done as a group. It took longer than I expected for what amounts to a speedpaint, but I think the unified look was worth the grind. Im not super happy with the colors I chose, but once I had committed there was no going back. I do like the blue goblins, though. This year is shaping up to be "the year of the goblin" with all the goblins I have in my queue, so, their blue skin is nice variation. Blue goblins aren't often seen on the boards, and Ive always liked them (and I seem to recall buglips hating them ). The ogres are great sculpts, some of my favorite generic ogres ever. Im happy to have them. I'm looking forward to fleshing out the ranks a bit more. I plan to add the aquatic ogre, and the half ogre, as well as the new goblin command (all sculpted by Bobby Jackson, I believe). I was pleasantly surprised to see more goblin grunts as special edition minis this month - Ill have to get those as well. Anyhow, enough rambling, enjoy the pics! The whole crew "everyone get in there": "now just the goblins" "the happy couple" "and one of the kids" "OK, two. Cant get enough of them." Comments and critiques are always appreciated. There are 14 bases here (and more minis if you count each gobbo) so if anyone would like some detail shots just holler and Ill happily add more.
  6. So, as of... two days ago... I have my Reaper Bones III pledge in hand. Rather than buy single figures, however, this time I bought swarms of *multiple* mook monsters - lots of giants, tauren, ect - and have committed myself to getting them all painted to tabletop in the next month or two. I've made a bold first step in that direction with the completion of these crazy kids! I got three packs of the yetis, since they come up in Against the Giants (the main campaign I was playing at the time of the kickstarter) a lot, and also since they were awesome sculpts done cheap. I wanted enough for a decent band for AtG or a random encounter, but also some to paint as bigfoots, since the tribal clothing they had seemed to work for either. I decided to give these guys a shot as a speedpaint, and see where that got me. I expect most of these will end up as speedpaints; there's an aweful lot of them. So, first: Proof of Completion on the Yeti warband: \ Real blurry, yeah. They weren't obliging me as a group; my old foe Focusmort come back to haunt me, perhaps. There we go. A little more obliging, on there own. So, to paint these up, I basecoated with Ultramarine Blue straight onto the plastic, then drybrushed on Linen White. Deadrose Red in the mouths, mixed with the white around the eyesockets, with Walnut brown for the eyes. Quick and easy - all eight took a bit under 4 hours, with the basecoating done all in one night, drybrushing before work, and then picking out details after. Nothing too fancy, but I'm happy with them, and my other players thought they looked amazing. They have low standards, but they're also the only ones I need to impress, so... Next up, the Bigfoots! These I'm much more excited about. Group shot: Based Walnut Brown, drybrushed Ruddy Leather; mouth is one of the lighter reds, and teeth and eyes are Linen White over ultramarine. These look rocking - they really work as bigfoots. All in all, I'm thrilled with these for 5 hours work. Gotta base them somehow though... And since we haven't all seen them: the sculpts for these are amazing - heavy and substantial in all the right ways. Enough diversity to make 2-3 sets not look like clones, with great accents. Totally worth getting for forest monsters if you don't do a arctic setting, and they'd probably make a neat swamp monster too... Next up... probably some taurs.
  7. So this guy got finished, so that he can get to Con.... Thanks for looking! G Wip here
  8. So, I've finally found a friend who is interested in Frostgrave and we've got a campaign going! We played several "practice" games with other warbands, but now we're ready to really enact a campaign. We, of course, waited until we'd received our copies of The Frostgrave Folio so we could include captains. I decided that the captain is my warband's actual leader and the brains behind the operation for the sake of the narrative. First off, let's meet the warband! "This had better be worth what I'm paying," the auburn-haired warrior said to the odd fellow with the foppish hat. "Oh good heavens yes!" the foppishly-hatted fellow said waving his arms flamboyantly around. "Felstad! City of wonders, mystery, enchantment...and other adjectives! It's thawing! If you can get there before other looters...I mean...historians, the treasures and riches of a past civilization of magical mavericks is yours!" Branna sighed to herself, and handed over the bag of coin. She hated to part with such a sum, but tried to consider it an investment: pay money to make money. She knew she'd need a band of followers to share in the excursion, and she'd already started her recruiting. Reliq Burrows, pirate-turned-thug-for-hire, and Dell Furth, the skittish archer, were already on board and were sitting a table away as she secured the map. After all, it's always smart to have back-up around in case deals like this go south. Next, Branna needed more hands to carry off loot they'd find. She knew exactly who she wanted to target for this. "Hmm, sounds dangerous," said Jaffy Lightfoot, the Halfling thief. "Yes, much too dangerous. I prefer my safe, urban setting where plenty of pockets make themselves available for the picking. Yes. I say no." "Huh, coward," chuckled his taller companion, Ella Shar. "Good luck getting out of your next scrape when someone catches your hand in their pocket and I'm not there to bail you out. I'm going with Branna." At this, the Halfling started making some odd sound at the back of his throat. It wasn't quite a gagging sound, nor did it entirely sound like whining. Ella had gotten used to it, and gave Branna a wink as she knew this sound indicated that Jaffy was weighing the options, but would ultimately side with her: as always. "Fine," he said with a sigh, "but I'm going to regret this, I'm sure." "Of course you will," Ella replied. "Regret is one of your many great skills!" With a couple of treasure grabbers on board, Branna knew she'd need some magic. After all, one does not wander into a land of wizards without bringing one or two of your own. She'd known some great and impressive wizards in her day. Unfortunately, the only ones available, were...well...these ones. "So, hot stuff, come to take me up on my offer?" the obviously fiendishly blooded fellow said, his voice dripping with self-confidence. "No," Branna replied, and launched into a quick explanation of the quest before he had time to try throwing yet another of his bad pick-up lines her way. V'Roth Forcahl had quite the reputation as an overly-confident ladies' man. Strangely, his meek and timid apprentice, Sylvania Efilbrooke, never seemed to be one of those ladies. In his interactions with her, he seemed caring and almost fatherly. Strange qualities compared to his usual gusto and bravado. At length, she finished her explanation. Sylvania looked at V'Roth to see how they'd respond. The tiefling laughed and said, "You know this is just your coy game to get in more time with me, Branna, but I'll play along." "Excellent," Branna replied, then added, "it'll be cold where we're going. You should find a shirt." V'Roth simply laughed in reply and then flexed. Branna was fairly happy with the band she'd gathered thus far. However, a single archer and her own bow would surely not be enough. Realistically, she could use another treasure grabber while she was at it. That settled it, she was going to bring in the twins. Venna, the sharpshooter with the crossbow, and Vesienne, the rogue, were quite a capable duo. The drawback, they were excessively co-dependent. A warband is ideally composed of members who will look out for each other. Branna knew full well that either of the DeMoir sisters would forsake the rest of the warband for her sister. Still, as long as she deployed them together so that looking out for each other worked out in the band's best interests, she was certain she could use their devotion to her own advantage. Branna was, indeed, skilled at war, but she also knew a thing or two about managing people. With the rest of the band in place, she approached the one member she truly trusted and the only one she saw as her peer. "They're a jumbled mess of outcasts, but I think we can use them to our advantage," she said. Then she leaned in and gave her warhound, Fang, a scratch behind the ear. "Just stick with me, big guy," she said, "and we'll finally hit our big payday." And with the band assembled, the only thing left was for Branna to give them a name: Branna's Brigands. V'Roth, Sylvania, and Jaffy are unaltered Bones minis. Branna and the twins are HeroClix minis I've altered (Branna was a gender-swapped version of Valeros, the iconic fighter from Pathfinder). Fang and Ella are rebased minis from MageKnight and HeroClix respectively. Dell is a Bones skeletal archer that I converted by adding Green Stuff. In terms of additional characters, the barmaids are minis I sculpted. The foppishly-hatted fellow is the result of some kit-bashing I did and arms I sculpted (he's the mini for one of my Pathfinder characters named The Traveler). I made all the terrain pieces including the bar tables (and I still need to finish painting them).
  9. So I was asked for a group shot of my Tre Manor / Red Box Games Warband.... Links to the individual Show offs: Ejrvindr the Far Seeing & Dagrun Arnholdt'sdottir Hawkeyed Arvid & Pretty Laerke Red Gunhildr & Little Svein Swiftfoot Njorn thugs The show offs should all have links to the Wips.... The building is from Games Workshop 40K, The Imperial City Box Set, Circa 2003? (Do you folks thing it works ok as Frostgrave terrain?) Thanks for looking!
  10. Njorn Hirdmen by Red Box Games Sculpted by Tre Manor Standard Table Top for these guys. I was a little in a hurry but it turned out well enough. I sculpted the bases and used some brick corners from some bricks Ub3r gave me. Again with these guys I put some Nordic runes on them. I hope you guys like them.
  11. So here's the figure I was talking about in another post, where I was lamenting about sealants and how they sometimes rubbed off details of my photos. I tried a new method though, and I think I've hopefully solved the problem. Here is the Ral Partha Female Barbarian with Short Sword, which was sculpted by the great Jim Johnson, and which was inspired from a Larry Elmore painting called Warband. Back then in the day, Partha did an entire box of figures dedicated to the painting. This is one of them, even though I didn't follow the painting's color scheme. I took a few pictures of her from a few different angles because she's not so flat and I think it helps appreciate the figure. Anyhoos, enjoy!
  12. So, I recently ran across a couple of bodies I'd created simply in an attempt to work on my basic sculpting of anatomy. I decided to sculpt one of them into a barbarian. Shortly after, I started giving him a barbarian buddy. Then, I grabbed a discarded sculpt realizing he'd make a great barbarian shaman. Before I knew it, I was creating a warband. I made 11 total members, so I can either have a spare (for when I inevitably have deaths) or I can just have them set up camp in an inn. First off, here's the whole crew. Next up, we have Grim Windreaver and his apprentice Kyryelle Bloodmoon. Of course, they need some meatshileds to keep them safe, so we have Ulf Strom, Sig Bloodseeker, and Dern Crookedblade. Then, they'll need speedy and sneaky types to haul off treasure, so our thief/treasure hunter types are Derna Crookedblade (Dern's sister), Wyn Swiftblade, and Thrayde Rawfang. And finally, archers to rain a volley of arrows down on our foes. We have Sterno Warhawk, Yng Razorbow, and Yvara Shang. Looking over them, it's pretty obvious to me, anatomy-wise, which ones were earlier practice sculpts and which ones I did more recently. That's encouraging! I'm looking forward to getting these guys painted up and ready to go. Hope you enjoyed them. Comments and constructive criticism always welcome :=)
  13. Reaper has some incredible snakemen miniatures, and I have managed to collect many of them. This is the start of what I like to consider my personal warband. In the past I have run games of SoBH at conventions, using the miniatures from my collection as loaner armies, and I wanted something that was just ......BADA** for myself . Snakemen are Bada**. you can't unsee it!
  14. This weekend I finished up my Chronomancer warband for Frostgrave. I've been working on this off and on since last October, and finally finished painting the last figure on Friday. I wanted to assemble a band that looked like they had been brought together from throughout time; or had been to different time periods, and brought back souvenirs. I did some customization to a few of the figures to get that Frostgrave-meets-other-time periods look I wanted. I'm very happy with how this group turned out, and I'm looking forward to get a chance to use them in a game! First up is the Chronomancer and Apprentice. These are both modified Reaper Bones figures. Next is the party's Templar, "Crossbowman", and Man-at-Arms. The Templar is made up mainly of GW Space Marine parts, the "Crossbowman" is a plastic French soldier (unsure of manufacturer), and the Roman is from Foundry. Note, that the Foundry figure was so short compared to the other figures in the warband, I had to base him up on a sheet of cork to make the size difference less noticeable. We then have a Thief, and two Thugs. The Thief is a Reaper metal Ninja figure, and the two Thugs are from the North Star plastic Frostgrave soldier set with the additions of different heads. Lastly, we have the group's War-Hound. This figure is from Eureka, and is just filling in as a proxy (probably; unless I end up liking him as part of the group too much ) until I get the guard dog figure from the Reaper Bones III Kickstarter this Fall. And here's a look at the whole gang together:
  15. So, I've got my thaumaturge warband that I'm completely sculpting, but that's going to take a while, so I assembled a second warband to start playing sooner. I decided to go chronomancer with the idea that he and his apprentice travel through time and space recruiting members for the band. I went with the Bones versions of Andre Durand and Nightslip for the wizard and apprentice. I'll be removing his gun hand and making it something different, though I'm still a bit up in the air as to what. For her, I'll be making one of her holsters a belt pouch and the other a sheathed dagger. Her guns hands will be replaced by one hand posed as if casting a spell and the other holding an hourglass (because it's a chronomancer symbol, so I figure it works as her casting focus and he is sculpted with a pocket watch). I have started the painting on the knight and treasure hunter. The blue toned outfits will be a unifying theme for the band. I'm hoping to get some painting time in this weekend. If not, we have spring break coming up week after next, so I should have plenty of time then. As a side note, big thanks to Chris for spending time chatting about Frostgrave and warbands to help me get ideas going and fleshing out concepts. It's a big help to have a "voice of experience" to help guide me through my gaming/terrain/etc. questions :=) Comments, critiques, suggestions, thoughts, etc. always welcome.
  16. Last week, I posted photos to "Show Off" of the Anhurian Spearman that I had recently completed painting for use with the game Frostgrave (http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/67363-yet-another-anhurian-spearman-77359-bones/ ); and forumite Pippin put in a request for me to please post photos of one of my completed Warbands for Frostgrave. I had been playing the game so far with a mix of figures specifically painted up for Frostgrave with snow bases, and existing figures in my collection that were on regular grassed bases. I had been busily painting figures for Frostgrave, but had been working on several warbands in parallel, and hadn't actually completed a full one. Since our group had started its Frostgrave campaign last month, I had been making a concentrated effort to finish my main Illusionist warband that I am using for the campaign, and completed the final figure this past weekend. I sat down today and took some shots of the complete group. (Note: Before the sharp-eyed Forstgrave players on the forum cry foul at there being 11 figures, after the first campaign game my group settled in an old inn, allowing them to add an extra figure to the warband) "What strange magic is this?", said the wizard Kodak, as the man set up the odd optical device before the group. "It is a machine for the making of a permanent image," said the man. "Like a painting, but with more realism and much quicker." "I'd like to see such magic!" said the curious Illusionist. Left to right: My Illusionist, Kodak (Reaper); his apprentice, Cherowyn (Reaper); the templar, Sister Elessa (Reaper); The treasure hunter, Jack (Reaper); archer, Edel (Reaper); and archer, Weiss (Reaper) Left to Right: The thief, Cadwalleter (Games Workshop); the thief, Agamemnon, (Games Workshop &; Wargames Factory); the thief, Linnese (Games Workshop); the thug, Bash (Games Workshop &; Wargames Factory) and the thug, Doc. (Games Workshop &; Wargames Factory)
  17. So, I recently got the Frostgrave rulebook and that got me inspired to create warbands. Of course, I couldn't just settle with the minis I already had, so I had to get more Bones...and then I needed to start sculpting. I decided I'd speed up the process somewhat by using Sculpey to do the basic frame of the figures and then get some actual sculpting of the feet and legs. Beyond about that much, using Sculpey can lead to too much mess, so I cooked them at that point and got started on adding Green Stuff. The thaumaturge, as described in the Frostgrave book, lean away from opulent clothing and embellishments and weaponry, so I thought it would be a nice twist to have the wizard and apprentice be a pair of twins. The wizard is the responsible sister who adheres to the ways of thaumaturges and the cultural traditions of their people (I was going for something vaguely Middle Eastern looking) while her less focused brother tends towards more flamboyance and weaponry. She has attire more based on culture and functionality, so she has a harness on which there will be pouches and such. She also wields a thin staff as a focus for her magic. I'm thinking I'll do a head wrap on her, but I may just go with a hood. He is wearing a medieval English looking style rather than cultural attire, though I will be adding a sash so it's still some element of a Middle Eastern look. Maybe a falchion hanging sheathed at his hip as well. (The pictures were taken on the interior of the tavern I'm creating for my terrain pieces)
  18. Making a Mordheim warband mostly for fun, as I don't have any locals to play with, but maybe it can create a little wave among the local Necro players. :D So I bought these really cool minis from Heresy. Three ghouls and a necromancer. I am going to need five ghouls total, three dregs and a vampire, but first things first. I've based them and shaded, and are currently waiting for them to dry: Based bronze skin tone: Shaded with plenty of Agrax Earthshade: Could not help myself. The necromancer was pointing at something, and I added another 'finger' from the sprue remains. Based with grey:
  19. I finally got done with this orc warband. The bowman had some deformities of the bonesium in his face so he got a wound that shows off his skull.
