  1. Howdy, all you fine folks! 🀠🐍 I'd like to show you something new that I've worked on in the last days, a Wild West Scene🌡🀩 A broken stagecoach, battered and beaten from years of hard ridin' and hold-ups, scuttlin' scorpions, colorful cacti, a weathered city sign with the watchful vulture, hitchin' post, rusty water pump and a black widow πŸœοΈπŸ•·οΈ Models are printed on a Photon Mono SE using M70 resin from resione and painted with Greenstuff World Colors🎨 What are your thoughts on the Wild West theme? Is it a genre that interests you, and if so, why? What are your thoughts about this snake-peak & What catches your eye the most? Have you ever created a similar diorama or scene before? If you could add one unique element to my Wild West scene, what would it be? Do you have any recommendations for resources like books, websites, or tutorials that could help me improve my diorama-building skills? Feel free to share your thoughts, ask questions, ideas!!!πŸ—£οΈπŸ’¬πŸ€ The final result is still on its way 🀠 Yeehaw! πŸŒ΅πŸŽπŸŒ…
  2. Deadlands is a series of Role Playing Games based around alternative history, with the major change taking place on July 3rd, 1863. This change, called The Reckoning, made the US Civil War grind to a halt, resulted in half of California fall into the sea, and had a new miracle substance called Ghost Rock revolutionize technology. The game has used different rules systems; including the original "classic" system, Savage Worlds, a new system that is/was releasing soon, a d20 conversion, and had a GURPS port. The Weird West - Beginning in 1876, players would wander around the Weird West, full of monsters, gunfighters, agents of the United States of America, Confederate States of America, the United Kingdom, the Empire of Mexico, the Dominion of Canada, and Lost Angels, might get involved in the Great Rail Wars, get lost in the Sioux Nations, or confront the creations of the New Science. The Wasted West - It's 2094 and the world is almost over. Irradiated Ghost Rock bombs, as well as conventional nuclear weapons, were dropped on major cities all over the globe. The east of the Mississippi river is full of the Walkin' Dead, the city of Lost Angels has fallen into the Pacific Ocean, and the only place where people can eek out a living is the west. Using Spook Juice, you can travel the collapsing highways from Junkyard to the ruins of Boise, and all points in between, traveling with Templars, Tellers, Cyborgs, Toxic Shamans, Sykers, and Junkmen. The Way Out West - The final part of the original trilogy of settings, this one is set on Banshee, the first alien world colonized by humanity. Of course, there were native people there first, and history has repeated itself again. Take up a badge and defend the colonists, or rob them instead, or maybe try to work with the natives, now that no one from Earth is coming to help. Ever. Deadlands: Noir - Set in the period between World Wars, centered around New Orleans, this was the first new game and first one done in the Savage Worlds system. So, I made this thread so folks could talk about games they're run/played, ask questions about the setting and system(s), or just share their love for the game.
  3. I have been working on my wild west town of Calamity for a long time. I have managed to acquire a number of different rules for Wild West miniatures during the course of working through the build. I recently did a review of the different rule sets that I have managed to accumulate over the last couple of years. I thought some of you might be interested in seeing some of the myriad of rules that are out there for the wild west. These posts aren't reviews in the sense of whether I like the rules or not but more of a breakdown on how the game works and its basic mechanics. http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2016/06/wild-west-rules.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2016/06/wild-west-rules-boot-hill-tsr.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2016/06/wild-west-rules-dead-mans-hand-great.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2016/06/wild-west-rules-desperado-knuckleduster.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2016/06/wild-west-rules-fistful-of-lead.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2016/06/wild-west-rules-legends-of-old-west.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2016/06/wild-west-rules-rules-with-no-name.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2016/06/wild-west-rules-shoot-n-skedaddle.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2016/06/wild-west-rules-gutshot-hawgleg.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2016/06/wild-west-rules-compilation.html I tried not to be biased towards any specific set of rules because I know that people are not necessarily looking for the same thing that I am in a set of rules. For example if I was going to run a campaign more in line with an RPG, I would probably use Gutshot it just provides that extra level of detail that would really make a western RPG really pop. For more general shoot 'em up fun I would personally lean towards Shoot N' Skedaddle or Fistful of Lead; Reloaded. There is a western RPG out there called Aces and Eights by Kenzer Co and I do own it but I didn't include it here as it really is a true RPG Western game and I find that I have difficulty working my way through it. I also left out Deadlands for much the same reason although I'm a huge fan of the original system and still own most of the books for it.
  4. Okay, so this isn't so much a "conversion" as it is an "appropriation." I had #77470 "Elthin Bluesteel, Gunslinger" (Pathfinder Bones) in my box o' Kickstarter Bones, while I was digging through to find anything that might even remotely look appropriate for a "Wild West" scenario. Sure, he's got some crazy boots, a big ol' dagger, and some sort of leather armor layered thing going on with his torso area, but he's got a gun, a cowboy hat, and a drape to one side that feels kind of Eastwood-ish to me. He also suffers from a wee bit of "melty face," as there's next-to-no definition to that face, and I'm still not even sure where the eyes were supposed to be, exactly. In my case, though, that only inspired me to notice that the details for his leather armor, etc., were so shallow that most of the parts incongruous to a cowboy gunslinger could probably just be painted over. He's not going to win any contests, but looks passable as another pistol-toting gunslinger in just another ordinary western town. (In this case, it would be the Flats outside quasi-historic Fort Griffin, as interpreted by Dog House Rules LLC in their "Frontier Towns: Fort Griffin" supplement. I based the scratch-built building off of a floor plan by Karl Keesler, and it's the central piece to a mini-adventure pulled from the book.) Anyway, I just think there's something ... amusing? ... about when I can delve into Reaper's regular fantasy line and find something that would work perfectly well for other genres. For some subjects, there's nothing terribly special about it: A fox is a fox, a bird is a bird, a dog is a dog, a cat is a cat, and it's not the least bit surprising that a pack of little animal familiars in the fantasy line would work just as well as pets for a modern or historic or even sci-fi setting (we just pretend that they're REPLICANT animals, or we paint them in funky colors). Plus, there are a number of D&D-ish monsters that bear no resemblance to anything recognizable from well-known myths and such -- and the only reason we think of them as "fantasy" was because Gary Gygax found a bunch of cheap plastic imported Kaiju toys and transformed them into "owlbears" and "rust monsters" and so forth for D&D, and "D&D is fantasy," so that's that. Still, somehow there's something "neat" about digging through a big box o' Kickstarter Bones, picking up some barbarian model, and realizing that if only I swap his bendy axe with a spare 40K POWER AXE, and paint up his armor plates to look like scrap metal (maybe with some paper-printed license plates and stop signs glued on), he'd make a GREAT post-apocalyptic raider type, etc. Or, some beast-man monster type could just as easily be some sort of pulp-universe alien, if only I paint up his armor a little differently and stick a ray-gun in his hand. And one of these days I'm going to turn that Mantis Assassin into a Kamen Rider. ;) Oh yeah, and as for the building: That's scratch-built from foam-core, cardstock (for raised details such as window and door frames), mat board, craft sticks, chopsticks (for the porch pillars), and wire, decorated with some Hirst Arts Castlemolds castings (for the porch furniture).
  5. Found this and thought I'd pass on: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/highnoongame/high-noon-a-wild-west-combat-tactical-board-game/description FYI the game components graphic near the top show what you get if you go "all in" NOT what's in a standard box.
  6. β€œOff to off the wizard” The figures are from Reaper Bones KS3, β€œChronoscope Wild West Oz”. Since they all were armed, I see this as a sort of hit squad, hence the title. I based them on 30mm round display bases from Reaper, and I 3d Printed a 20mm round in a similar style for Toto. Since not only the Tin Man, but also the flying monkey are obvious metal robots, I think β€œWeird West Oz” or even β€œSteampunk Oz” would be a more fitting moniker. The miniatures are made in the slightly harder Bonesium, henceforth to be known as Better Bonesβ„’. Since the third Bones kickstarter, all Chronoscope Bones are coloured grey, The Flying Monkey, Lion, Tin Man and Scarecrow are sculpted by Bob Ridolfi, with Dorothy and Toto by Julie Guthrie. Only the Scarecrow seems to be released in Bones as of yet.
  7. This past week I completed the last of the four hero figures from the Bones 3 Kickstarter Wild West Wizard of Oz set: the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, the Lion, and Dorothy & Toto. (Still have the Wicked Witch and the Flying Monkey to do) This was a really fun set to do, and it had some interesting interpretations of the classic characters. Also, I was lucky enough to get a chance to already use them as my gang in a post-apocalyptic game of "This is Not a Test". For the full painting articles and more photos, please see my Bones painting blog linked in my signature.
  8. This is a boss character from the skirmish game - Wild West Exodus. At some point I need to get round to painting more of these.
  9. Completed another couple of Malifaux models: I've never been great at freehand, but I wanted to try anyway some kind of tattoo/warpaint... Result is kinda mediocre, but overall I'm not too displeased As usual, C&C will be appreciated More pics on my blog: gabbigames.wordpress.com
  10. I'm still contemplating exactly what I want my saloons for Calamity to like. In the meantime I decided that something a bit more complicated was called for. This is the "Hardware" store, I'm not sure it will remain a hardware store in the end but for now its a convenient handle. Still in the construction phase but the light at the end of the tunnel is starting to get bigger. Here is a link to the last installment on my blog: http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2016/01/building-calamity-27-hardware-store.html
  11. This is the 2nd row house for my western town of Calamity and I finished it off over the weekend. I tried out a couple of different techniques and materials but overall the build is almost the same as the first row house I built. Primary components are; foamed PVC sheets and commercial parts for the doors and windows. I used a wood shingle for the roof which lent itself to slightly different style of weathering than I use on a paper or cardstock shingle. I'm still up in the air on the usefulness of chipping fluid to create chipped paint and a lot of the chips are actually painted on. Another completed build for Calamity. Here are some pictures of the build along with links to the relevant sections of my blog. If you dig a little bit you can find the blog posts for the 1st version of the row house. ] http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2015/12/building-calamity-9-row-house-2-initial.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2015/12/building-calamity-10-row-house-2.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2015/12/building-calamity-11-row-house-2-more.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2015/12/building-calamity-12-row-house-2-even.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2015/12/building-calamity-13-row-house-2.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2015/12/building-calamity-14-row-house-2-roof.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2015/12/building-calamity-15-row-house-2.html
  12. This week I completed the Ellen Stone, Cowgirl figure as I begin working on the Chronoscope set from the Bones I Kickstarter. This figure is notorious for it's missing nose; however, I wanted to see if with generous shadow and highlight, could get her looking more normal in her face. Also, as I studied how I wanted to paint her, I thought about painting the shirt white; and as I thought this it occurred to me that it might be neat opportunity to try and attempt a level of translucency to the shirt, as might occur with a thin white cotton shirt. I'm happy with how she came out; particularly the face, which I think is one of my best to date. Despite it's casting flaws I'm very pleased with this figure. For the complete write-up on how I painted her, please see my blog: http://allbonesabout.blogspot.com/2015/08/ellen-stone-cowgirl-figure-168-of-265.html
  13. Has anyone actually played WWX? I can't say that I'm overly impressed with the models, but interesting/different gameplay always piques my interest. Anything new or novel here? Not that I need any more miniatures games....
  14. So I'm looking to expand my western movie collection. While I know we all have our favorite western films this time around I'm looking for those definitive western films. Along the lines of a director's best western film, an actor or actress' best western film. The only restrictions are: 1) You have to tell me why you picked that film so state whether its for the director or the actor. You can only name a director, actor or actress once. For instance you could name Clint Eastwood twice, once for his best (or defining) western role and once for his best (or defining) western film he directed. He could still appear in other films you have selected. 2) Don't just throw a list out there, I want to know why I should consider hunting down that film. 3) You can name as many movies as you like as long as they fulfill the 1st restriction. Ready......Go!
  15. The proportions of this figure strike me as a bit gawky and thin ... but then that's entirely in keeping with this guy being called "Slim." The figure practically begs for conversion; the neck and wrists are very clear, making this an ideal candidate for head or hand/weapon swaps, and even the delineation between the rim of the head and the bottom of the hat invites a pretty clean cut with hobby knife (so that some other hat could be substituted). What's more, with a bit of putty (and I'll likely be doing this the next time I pick up one of these figures), a fairly straightforward bandanna face mask could be made to clearly turn this into a bandit/robber/outlaw type. "Reach fer the SKY, pardner! This here's a ROBBERY!" That sort of thing. :) It might even improve the figure, as it might help to obscure the "pencil-neck" look of the figure right now. The integral round base has a very nice wooden plank texture that nicely conveys the notion of this figure standing on the front deck of a saloon, bank, or sheriff's office in an old "wild west" town, and it's small enough to fit into the recessed portion of one of the round 30mm lipped Chronoscope bases (although it's a bit on the thick side). My only real "innovation" for this particular figure was that I printed off a sheet of various posters and "wild-west"-era ads and signage (thank you, Google Images!) and in this case I opted to put an entire poster on the base to underscore that "wild west" connection. I used a hobby knife to tear out points at the corners, to give the idea that this had been tacked up at the corners but then pulled/ripped off, thus losing the corners in the process. In retrospect, I could have probably gotten by with just a mere portion of the poster plastered to the deck (so that more of the nice wooden plank texture could show), but I suppose that's something I can do for other western-themed figures. Detail on the gun belt, pants, and shirt is subtle but still distinct enough to bring out with washes or a little bit of brush highlighting. The guns themselves are more of a challenge, as the barrels seem bound and determined to bend back; I tried heating and straightening, which only seemed to give temporary relief, and once I started actually painting, I gave up on going back and hoping to get a different result. Further, the detail on the guns comes out a bit lumpy, perhaps too fine (and at too much of an extremity) to come out properly in "Bonesium," but at least it gets the rough idea across that he's got guns. If I hadn't already used up all my "hand holding pistol" pieces in my Deadlands accessory packs, I'd do a hand/weapon swap, pronto. (And getting a pricey pewter accessory pack just for a single cheap Bones mini seems like overkill. ;) Although I'd certainly go for it if I were trying to kitbash a PC mini.)
  16. I've been working on this guy for a while, but am giving him his own thread under the new WIP guidelines. I base coated a few more bits, but now I'm stumped. I want to make some of the metal bits of his gun NMM brass, but I have no idea what colors I should use. Any suggestions?
  17. The is the first of three or four buildings that I'm scratchbuilding for my wild west town of Calamity. The driving concept behind Calamity is a display board to be used at conventions to promote my local miniatures gaming club (The League of Extraordinary Gamers or LEG). I want it to be the kind of board that really draws people in and gets them fired up to learn and play a game and get introduced to miniature games. With that in mind my builds tend to be a bit more involved than you would ordinarily put into a building meant for gaming. That goes for all of my laser cut buildings as well, all will be dressed up when I start building the boards themselves. I opted for styrene plastic as my main material. Its easy to work with, readily available and the core plastic I can pick up for free from one of my friends in the banner printing business. This also allows me to use commercially available doors and windows from the local model railroad store. The Calamity Newspaper Office (although it could serve as anything, even a saloon) is based on plans from one of my model railroad books "Structures of the Early West", 2nd edition 1994, Joseph Crea and Elwood Bell, and is still standing in Crested Butte Colorado (its a restaurant now, another friend has eaten there and says they have great burgers). I don't think that this book is in print anymore but if you can find a copy it has a lot of different buildings in it. This building is built to 1/56th scale, which is about as close to correct as we get for our miniatures. The doors are all O Scale, or 1/48th scale, from Grandt Line as are the windows. I found that the S Scale, or 1/64th scale, doors were a bit to small in most cases but the S Scale windows work quite well. But the building proportions themselves are all set to 1/56th. Here is a picture of the building as it stands right now before any, major, exterior painting has been started. There is some test color for my weathered undercoat on the back wall, which I rather like. I have been covering building the Newspaper Office, and my trials and tribulations, on my blog. Here are the links from prototype to completed model if you would like to see this building's journey from matt board to final assembly. These are in sequence from start to current: http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2013/12/calamity-prototype-building-newspaper.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2013/12/calamity-prototype-buildings-moving.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2013/12/calamity-newspaper-office-cutting-parts.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2013/12/calamity-newspaper-office-time-for-some.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2013/12/calamity-newspaper-office-doors-and-more.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2013/12/calamity-newspaper-office-interior-work.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2014/01/calamity-newspaper-office-final-assembly.html
  18. This is the first building for my western town of Calamity that is scratchbuilt (well mostly, I cheated on doors and windows). I'm referring to this building and the few other scratchbuilt buildings as "Hero" buildings. They will be buildings where I expect a lot of action to take place. The rest of the buildings, which make up the bulk of the town, are "Sidekick" buildings. They are there to further the action and may see some, none or even a lot of action. Some "Sidekick" buildings might be upgraded to "Hero" buildings later on. I have a ton of buildings finished so I'm ready to get started on the board sometime after ReaperCon 2014. Here are a few pictures of the finished buildings and a few links if you want to see the the whole series of posts about the work on this building. The last post: http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2014/01/calamity-newspaper-office-finishedfor.html The series http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2013/12/calamity-prototype-building-newspaper.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2013/12/calamity-prototype-buildings-moving.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2013/12/calamity-newspaper-office-cutting-parts.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2013/12/calamity-newspaper-office-time-for-some.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2013/12/calamity-newspaper-office-doors-and-more.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2013/12/calamity-newspaper-office-interior-work.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2014/01/calamity-newspaper-office-final-assembly.html http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2014/01/calamity-newspaper-office-few-coats-of.html
  19. My western town of Calamity finally has some new, painted, denizens to populate it. This is the rest of the stuff I managed to finish before the end of the holiday weekend. Although there are 8 minis in the picture only 5 of them count towards the total. That brings me up 22 for the holiday weekend. Here's the group shot: left to right Wargames Foundry Rusty Dimmock, Reaper Female Huckster, Dixon Bystander, Black Scorpion Tombstone 5, Reaper Miss Scarlet, Reaper Female Huckster, Brigade Games Western Characters I (Gambler), Brigade Games Western Characters I (Bartender) Individual pictures are on my blog at: http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2013/12/citizens-of-calamity-more-new-folks.html
  20. I finally was able to acquire six of 4Ground's Dead Man's Hand buildings and built the first one up the day I arrived back from LA. Fantastic Service from Great Escape Games had them waiting for me on the doorstep (well in the house, one of the boys did bring the package inside). This is Side Street Building #2. I liked the kit and found it fun to build. Naturally I took extensive photos of my first build and noted some spots that I had difficulty with. Here are a couple pictures of the finished structure and if you interested in the trials and tribulations (actually not many) of building this beastie head on over to my blog: http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2013/08/building-4ground-dead-mans-hand-side.html Note that this is a very picture intensive blog post even for me.
  21. I still have some buildings left to build, including the centerpiece which will be scratchbuilt. However, I thought it was time to get some paint on the buildings I have finished. This will be a two step process. Step 1 painting on the undercoat. In most cases this will also be the final color for the sides and backs of most of the buildings. On the front this is the undercoat and will be covered with paint and then partially exposed to create a peeling paint effect. This is definitely a "season to taste technique". There is more detail on my blog: link Here are a couple of shots of the first three buildings to get this treatment.
  22. Hello. My name is Joaquim and this is my first post in this forum, althought I've been lurking here for quite a while. I'm from Portugal and I've been playing Warlord for some time now. I love wild west games and I've played a few but I always flet that they lacked something. I read Cowboys & Gunslingers and I was drawn to it instantly. But I had to add some details that I think that belong to this particular system. Some s abilities and the Leader and Troops rules. I've played twice since and it worked pretty well. Please let me know your oppinion about it. Abilities Leader A leader can lead troops (0-3) (0-5) (0-8) and add +1 to their DIS. Horse Ride A model can ride a Horse. The stats are the same. MOVE becomes always 9. It adds 1 to his DV and substracts 1 to his RAV while in the back of a Horse. It takes one action to mount and dismount. Born in a Saddle The figure is complete at ease when mounted in a Horse. It doesn't subtract to his RAV and mounts and dismounts as a free action. Fast Draw When firing or making a Defensive Shot, this model strikes first. The damage it makes will be done before the adversary fires. Troops Cowboys Rank: Troop DT: 0/1 Move: 5/4 DIS: 6/5 DV: 8/7 EXP: 2/1 SA: Tough/1, Born in a Saddle MAV: 3/2 #MA: 2 RAV: 4/2 #RA: 1 SA: Rng(4), Ammo/12, Reload/2 or Rng(12), Ammo/15, Reload/2 Gunslingers Rank: Troop DT: 0/1 Move: 5/4 DIS: 6/5 DV: 9/8 EXP: 2/1 SA: Tough/1 MAV: 3/2 #MA: 2 RAV: 4/3 #RA: 2 SA: Rng(4), Ammo/12, Reload/2 or RAV: 4/3 #RA: 1 Rng(12), Ammo/15, Reload/2 Outlaws Rank: Troop DT: 0/1 Move: 5/4 DIS: 5/4 DV: 9/8 EXP: 2/1 SA: Tough/1 MAV: 4/3 #MA: 2 SA: Bloodlust RAV: 4/3 #RA: 2 SA: Rng(4), Ammo/12, Reload/2 or RAV: 4/3 #RA: 1 Rng(12), Ammo/15, Reload/2 Deputies Rank: Troop DT: 0/1 Move: 5/4 DIS: 6/5 DV: 9/8 EXP: 3/2 SA: Tough/2 MAV: 4/3 #MA: 2 RAV: 4/3 #RA: 2 SA: Rng(4), Ammo/12, Reload/2, Disarm or RAV: 4/3 #RA: 1 Rng(12), Ammo/15, Reload/2, Disarm Rangers Rank: Troop DT: 0/1 Move: 6/5 DIS: 7/6 DV: 9/8 EXP: 3/2 SA: Tough/2, Ranger/4 MAV: 4/3 #MA: 2 RAV: 4/3 #RA: 2 SA: Rng(4), Ammo/12, Reload/2, Disarm or RAV: 4/3 #RA: 1 Rng(12), Ammo/15, Reload/2, Disarm And that's it for the Cowboys and Gunslingers for now. As for Galactic Warlord ;) I've been struggling with scifi weapons and abilities. I'd like to have your ideas on this. Not weapon ranges, or special abilities, but modifiers to RAV. Should RAV be only accounted on the figures capacity or weapons should modify this? Thanks in advance and a Happy New Year for you all.
