Hello All, Here are photos of two monsters I completed this week. A 77371 Dark Heaven Bones "Basilisk" and a Wizkids D&D Nolzur's Marvelous Miniatures "Owlbear" Thank you for looking.

A friend of mine who plays D&D said she had a Tiefling character that was unpainted. "Unpainted? You take your character to your game unpainted? GIVE ME THAT!" That's a sin knowing I like to paint and you're walking around with an unpainted mini. I asked her for the specifics she'd want. She told me silver hair, orange eyes, red skin, and bone colored horns. With that I went to work. Not sure I'm in love with my colors on this one. I'm also unsure if the red skin comes off as red. I used red as the base and then highlighted up with beige red. Purple and green felt strong, but ok to use together. Let me know.

I decided to mess around with GW contrast paints on some clear resin Wizkids Deep Cuts Hell Hound minis. This is what they look like unpainted. I washed the mini in warm soapy water, then undercoated it with some matt varnish. I then wet blended Iyaden Yellow, Gryph-Hound Orange, Blood Angels Red, Flesh Tearers Red and Black Templar, before going back over the top with the yellow and orange in random spots on the red and black areas to give a bit more variation. Here is the other (finished) Hell Hound: Super simple and really quick, but pretty effective. It has a metal collar that I think I’ll paint in opaque paint, but I’m not sure what colour metal. Any suggestions? Similarly, I think I should put some glowing eyes. Do I go for yellow-white, bright red or something else?

As you can see from the title, I'm a noob playing around with layering. Or glazing? I'm not sure about the difference, in the tutorial videos I watched, both techniques come down to painting diluted paints over a base coat. I've painted the armor with a black-and-silver mix, then painted over with diluted silver where I imagine the light hits. I'm happy with the effect. I feel like I've messed up the face. I layered Vallejo Paint Bronze Fleshtone (over that color + white) to simulate shade from the helmet, and tried to pain the eyes gold because she's depicted with glowing eyes in the official artwork. I think I should just have gone for skin-wash... I hope I can salvage it. I also see now that I haven't been thorough with removing the mold lines and messed up the gold detail somewhat. I'm a bit unsure about what to do with the hair and, well, whatever you call this piece of clothing. I painted shades on the lower part of the hair, in the areas where multiple layers of cloth overlap and on the right where the wing is above it. I just glazed over with a red + black mix. I'm kind of going back and forth thinking that it looks too dark and smudgy, and (especially on the front) not dark enough. I'm also unsure if I should add highlights or shades on the wavy part. It's relatively flat, and most tutorials I've seen deal with robes that have very deep folds. I definitely want to add highlights to the hair, but I don't know what color. Mixing red and white would give pink, and that doesn't seem right. I tried glazing with orange, but wasn't happy with the result, so I glazed over with red again. It's still slightly visible. Some other minor detail, I've tried to paint the shadow of the body on the base of the wings. Not sure I like it, but you only see it when you go looking for it anyway... One more picture that I took, can't really think of any commentary. Any advice on layering or any other things is very welcome!

Been awhile since I shared something here. Here's a night hag I painted up a few months back. More Photos below the Spoiler I'd love to see some of your favorite examples of OSL so feel free to drop them below! Also, what's your favorite D&D hag, or favorite witch from pop culture. - I guess they're not technically hags, but I love the Fates from Disney's Hercules. They always creeped me out and I love running witches like them.

Here are a couple of WIP photos from my T-rex conversion to the "King of Feathers". I was working from this painting, from the "Tombs of Annihilation" campaign book. I trimmed away a lot of the ornamentation on his back and put on a base of green stuff. Once that dried, giving me a smooth surface to work from, I started adding small strips of green stuff to jam the 'feathers' into. The feathers are made from Dollar Store plants. I used wire cutters to clip the ends off of about 500 individual plastic leaves. Then I washed the leaves, so they would have a better chance of sticking to the green stuff and the glue. They still fall out sometimes, even though they are glued into the greenstuff with superglue. I would add a chunk of greenstuff and smooth it out. Then I jammed in the 'feathers'. Once I had a line of feathers in place, I put another line of greenstuff on top of them to hold them in place, and to be the base for the next layer of feathers. Once I had all the pieces ready to go, it went surprisingly quickly. The actual process of applying the feathers only took about two hours. I used my airbrush to apply primer in a zenithal pattern. Because of the complexity of the feathers, it was much easier to use the airbrush to prime it rather than brush it on. Final paint finish turned out pretty well. Here is the same figure painted as a more traditional t-rex. This project was a lot of fun. I spent a lot of time giggling over how the players in my D&D game were going to react when I put this on the table.

Just a simple pair of horrible spacebeasts frolicking in their native hellworld! I'll have to gloss up the molten bits of the base at some point. Any tips on lava bases I should be aware of? In retrospect, I think the glowing mouths were inspired by the "gorilla-wolf motherbroccolers" from Attack the Block. I do not know if the designers intended this, but the pair of them are in a perfect pose for Magma Wrasslin.'

Hello This is my first post really on forums. I normally post on Facebook. My wife and I paint models alot of the time side by side. Whilst I prep our quarterly contest entry we worked on these Storm Giants... About half way done.

Hi! I was just wondering if there were any reaper dragon minis close in size to the young green wizkids dragon? or any other dragons of any types that's not wizkids that's similar in size? I'm wanting to run an encounter with two dragons of the same size and would prefer not to double up on minis, and would love to expand my dragon collection to other companies than wizkids.

I started Rimeblast a couple weeks ago. She's the first thing I've painted in some time. It won't be anything special (I've got to learn how to up my game one of these days), but it's a start. This won't be a real in-depth thread, just the "end of the night" update after a painting session. Well, that was where I started. I knew that the "white" dragon wouldn't be white. It's not the way things are in the world where Rimeblast dwells. But, this is the Ocean Colors triad (specifically Deep Ocean), which isn't just blue enough. So, after a couple weeks of unhappy-back-of-the-mind pondering I pull out the paints again. This is where I am now. This is better. This is Sky Blue with little bits of Deep Ocean peaking through. I'm "OK" with that. It gives some variation so she's not (quite) all the same shade. I'm thinking I'm going to take a heavy drybrush of Frosty Blue, and then a lighter drybrush of Ghost White, or even Sparkling Snow, to finish the scales. The scutes (belly scales) have received a coat of Foggy Grey which is, I've discovered, very close to the shade of Vallejo grey primer already on it. I'll likely be using Pure White and Sparkling Snow to finish those up--assuming I don't go back and redo them in Rainy Grey. I'm afraid the countershading will be a little too "bright" if I leave them at "Foggy." I'm still not sure where I'm going to take the spinal ridge, crest, and wings. The bones/supports in the wings bug me a bit. I keep thinking that there should only be three or four support "fingers" (like a bat), and there a lot more there. Pardon me while I over-analyze fantasy creature morphology. Thanks for dropping by!

fun fast little project

It's been some time since I last posted here, but I recently got and painted this WizKid beholder! Comment, criticisms and advice will be gratefully received! The mini in the background I am not quite ready to post as I have not based it properly yet!

After winning a Wizkids Half-Orc Paladin as part of a larger eBay auction I decided to convert it into something else. The scale of the head seemed too small so I replaced that. And the sword did not look quite right so I replaced that. Then whilst painting I got the idea to give it that Brotherhood of Steel rusty red look and suddenly I saw a Medieval Fantasy version of Paladin Danse from Fallout 4. However, I am not sure others will see the same resemblance I do.

Hello everyone, here’s the second Wizkids character model I painted for one of the players in my DnD group. I painted the armor using the NMM technique and added blood effect (not hers). This is a Nolzur’s Marvelous Miniatures 73542, Half-Orc female Fighter produced by Wizards of the Coast. I painted it with Reaper MSP paint. Happy International Hobby Day!

Hello everyone, here’s the first Wizkids character model I painted for one of the players in my DnD group. I painted it with Reaper MSP paint. It was a fast paint job since he's eventually going to be moved around on the gaming table. This 72618, Human Wizard is a Wizkids D&D Nolzur’s Marvelous Miniatures. Have a great day. (it is missing the spell effect piece. I will paint it later).

This was just a little project I wanted to give a try to. I am still getting used to bones and wizkids plastics and this looked sort of fun. I decided on blue because it looked sort of Fey and made the mini look shadowy Lots of mold lines on this one! There're everywhere and not in the best of locations, like right across the face. Still I could have done better contrast here but one not sure how something that is supposed to walk in shadows! Anyway, enjoy!

I decided to do the big treant today to have something that I could do quickly. Here's today in a few pics. They got a bit out of order. Green beard, orange mushrooms, black + browning shadows, brown + light brown in highlights. not sure what more I'll do. May not get to paint until the weekend.

My cousin came over to paint a Bones mini I had laying around to be his new (temporary?) character, as he was slain at the end of the last session. I decided to pull out the Nolzur’s Grick pack to paint something easy while half entertaining him. I just used two colors so far, Vallejo Green Brown for the belly and sucker “underside” of its face tentacles, and Reaper Troll Hide, both thinned 1:1 with Vallejo Thinner Medium, and a damp brush. Both colors went onto the smaller Grick like butter, and produced a wonderfully highlighted and shaded effect on their own. Sadly I got interrupted by life, and the paint was drying well out by the time I got back (I had put my palette in a ziplock bag, but still...) so I just used the VMC Green Brown that remained to touch up the smaller one, and start on the large one. I also mixed up a small bit of the Troll Hide again, to touch up a few remaining spots on the smaller aberration. But I’m beat, so enough painting for tonight. Going forward I plan to do the beak with Reaper Coal Black, which I’ve not had opportunity to make use of, yet. Plus I’ll put some Citadel Screamer Pink in for the mucosa of the mouth. Since the paint was acting so wonderfully as a wash, any spots I had to touch back up that resulted in darker splotches, I just mirrored on the opposite side, making that part of his skin pattern. I’m quite pleased with how it’s turning out, and it was ridiculously easy for a great tabletop standard. I need to do more monsters like this.

Here is a tabletop elven trio. I am satified they will help fill out the ranks of my eerie forest setting... I liked these better than the other wizkids elves I painted - mostly because the cloaks seemed less rediculously billowy. Pretty decent depth to details too.They seem very elvy to me. s

Been putting this on the table sans paint a couple of times, so long overdue painting was finally done. It's been a center pices for a hag's tower and now the party took it!

Here is a pack of werewolves from Wizkids. Once again I found myself a bit annoyed with their smaller sculpts - they don't quite fit my personal aesthetic and some of the details are rather shallow for my tabletop skills. I chopped out the hand that one of the sculpts was holding. Quick painting and the photos tell me a familiar story - MORE highlights needed! All in all the players were surprised that those wolves trailing them had a bit more to them....

Beholders are one of those miniatures I've steered clear of because I don't think I have the skills to do it justice so I decided to tackle the zombie version instead.
