Hello again friends! Painted using a Reaper round #1 and the following Reaper Master Series paints: Red Shadow, Redstone, Gory Red, Auburn Shadow, Black Green, Dark Elf Shadow, Midnight Blue, Faded Khaki, Splintered Bone. Per Proctor's request, I tried doing bigger photos this time and I even blew one photo way up so that you could get in close. I decided to do a scar through his right eye; first time attempting to paint that feature. I also added a line of battle damage along the top right edge of his armor to add some details/interest and show that this is one battle-hardened gnoll savage. My goal was for armored/metallic parts to be relatively dull in appearance because I just wouldn't expect this fella to take good care of his equipment. C&C always welcome from ANY level of painter.
Here is my King of Ghouls. My goal with the miniature was to create a skin tone that was indicative of an ancient and powerful undead horror. This ghoul has survived countless challenges from untold parties of adventurers. Primitive stitches hold together damage to his skin, whilst unnatural healing takes place underneath it's surface; hinted at by his menacing eyes. "It's skin, is that thing alive or dead...?" - Alric the cleric (shortly before death) The pair of ravens, his liaisons, his scouts, and his scavenging companions...one of whom carries the eyeball trophy of a recent challenger. Stoically one raven watches for challengers while the other celebrates the trophy. I wanted the NMM on the scythe and his little bits of boot armor and belt to look well-aged while still hinting at their unbelievable worth and functional status. I opted to use static grass on the base in conjunction with painted earth and rocks that compliment his overall color scheme. The goal of the grass is to juxtapose this powerful undead by contrasting his long-lived undeath with the appearance of surroundings that are fresh and healthy. There's a beautiful piece of AD&D 2nd ed artwork, I think from the Monstrous Compendium with a unicorn(?) and a skull or something like that and I had that idea in the back of my head. The colors I used include only Reaper MSP: dark elf shadow, jungle moss, faded khaki, dusky skin, pure black, dark skin, woodstain, maggot white, driftwood, blood red, magenta, auburn shadow, blue-grey paint sample, misty grey, pure white, oiled leather, mahogany, sun yellow. From the Imbrian Arts Kickstarter tag: The King of Ghouls- Once a mighty warrior, now he roams the earth, thrice damned and undying, tormented by the echoes of his past life and mocked by his ravens "Gone! Gone!"
Here is my version of the Imbrian Arts, Blacksands Orc by Jody Siegel. I Googled hundreds of orc photos, and poured through my monster manuals (etc.) to come up with a skin tone that would satisfy me with respect to this orc. I've never been too much of a fan or the purple-skinned orcs, and I'm also not a fan of the bright green skin either. To satisfy my own taste as an artist I ended up with a skin tone heavily influenced by olive, brown and deep tones of purple to darken him up. I literally wanted him to look as though he'd been surviving in a desolate area, all alone, bounty hunting, preying on the weak and surviving at all costs. Jody's sculpt did an amazing job of capturing a visage that literally spoke to me that this was the face of a killer without a conscience. Much like a Tre' Manor sculpt, this figure comes with an amazing amount of tiny detail, and very small eyes. Assembly was a bit tough, but green stuff always saves my day! The colors I used on this figure include only Reaper MSP: Grass Green, Faded Khaki, Imperial Purple, Sun Yellow, Pure Black, MSP Sample (blue-grey shade), Fresh Blood, Blackened Brown, Mahogany Brown, Vampiric Skin, Vampiric Shadow, Blue Liner, Dark Elf Shadow, Nightshade Purple, Misty Grey, Black Green, Jungle Moss, Gory Red, Spattered Crimson, and Dusky Skin Highlight. I hope you like him. C&C always welcome. Per the flavor text of the Orc on his Kickstarter: An Orc of the Blacksands- The embodiment of a perfect warrior. Trained at brutal combat from birth and taught to survive in the most inhospitable climate on the planet.
