  1. UPDATE 10/19: We are doing two rounds of sign ups. The assignments for the first round were sent out on 10/18. Any questionnaires received after that date will be part of the second round. The deadline for the second round will be 11/13. Updates to the rules due to this change are in green. Yes, it seems too early to start this but with how this year has gone I thought to give you guys as much time as I could. Also this will give you a slight chance to utilize Reaper's October specials and/or any specials they do next month. What is Secret Sophie, you ask? Well, it's a lot like Secret Santa, with a more attractive (albeit more dangerous) delivery person! (For those not in the know, Sophie the Succubus is Reaper's mascot.) This is the time of year for Reaper forumites to give a little holiday cheer to each other. Unlike most of the exchanges we do on the forums, this will have two categories - miniature and gift exchange and gift-only exchange. Round 1: Signups will run from October 4th to October 16th, with the assignments going out by end of day October 19th. Sign ups for Round 2 will run from October 19th to end of day November 13th, with assignments going out by end of day November 16th. If you've never done an exchange before, how it works is like this: Everyone who is interested PMs me (SGHawkins09) with the questionnaire below filled out by the deadline. The organizer (SGHawkins09) then matches you with a person to whom you will send your gift/mini, and another person from whom you will receive a gift/mini from in return (sometimes it's the same person). Halfway through the exchange, you'll need to send the organizers a WIP. You have until the deadline to send your gift/mini out. This exchange is based on trust. Please be respectful of the fact that someone else is investing their time, money and energy into painting a mini for you. I am simply the organizer, but I will do everything I can to make sure that everyone who paints a miniature receives one. The Rules (tl;dr version) Gifts should be primarily new, Reaper-branded presents. Exchanging painted miniatures is optional. Fill out the questionnaire below and send it to me via PM. Painters must post a Work In Progress (WIP) image of your mini under a spoiler tag to this thread by December 29th. The deadline for non-painters to mail their items is December 21st. The deadline for painters is January 31st. Full Rules Decide whether you are doing gift and miniature exchange or gift-only exchange. "Gifts" are Reaper paints, unpainted miniatures, or other Reaper painting supplies. Recommended dollar value of gifts is $25 or less. The miniature exchange is where you paint a Reaper miniature for someone and mail it to them. If you want to paint more than one miniature, you may do so. Reaper minis are the focus. If you want to paint more than one miniature, you may do so. If you wish to include other gifts for your recipient, you may do so, but please keep them small. The focus of the exchange should be a Reaper product. Fill out all the appropriate sections of the questionnaire below and send it to me via PM. Please fill out the current version of the questionnaire, Please don't just send an old one, as questions may have changed. Please don't contact your partner unless they have listed themselves as okay with contact. I've included it on the questionnaire, so you'll know who wants to keep it secret and who doesn't. You will need to acknowledge your assignment message and/or post or message me that you have selected a miniature by November 13th. Basically, if I do not hear anything from you once the assignments go out, you will be dropped, and your recipient will be reassigned as part of Round 2. I really do not want to do this but there have been too many instances in the past of radio silence once assignments go out. Round 2 participants will need to acknowledge your assignment message and/or post or message me that you have selected a miniature by November 30th. In order to encourage people to start painting early, you will need to post a Work In Progress (WIP) image of your mini under a spoiler tag to this thread by December 29th. The mini should be at least base-coated by this time. If you don't post a WIP by this point, I may have to demote you to gift-only or drop you from the exchange. Please don't make me do this. Try really hard to get your miniature out by the deadline. Let an organizer know if you are going to be late. Please post in this thread once you have received your miniature from your partner. We all love seeing what everyone did and it serves as an acknowledgement that you received it. In the past some people have wanted to send food - please verify allergens, etc. with your partner before proceeding. If you are mailing internationally and plan to send more than just miniatures/paint, you must contact your recipient to get any "bonus items" approved. We don't want any trouble with customs. As an example, plant matter or powders can cause a lot of trouble. The organizers (SGHawkins09) can help facilitate any anonymous conversations you want to have with your partner. Have fun! Deadline The deadline for acknowledging your assignment is November 13th for Round 1 and November 30th for Round 2. The deadline for mailing gifts is December 21st. This is for the gift only participants, painters can send the gifts separate and earlier than the painted figure but it is not required. The deadline for a WIP photo is December 29th. The deadline for mailing exchange miniatures is January 31st, but it's even better if you can get them out by Christmas. Assignments Deadline Round 1 assignments have been sent. The organizer will send the assignments for Round 2 by end of day November 16th. Please let me know if you're interested by end of day, November 13th. I can't make any guarantees if you're late, but I will try to make arrangements. Exchange Assistant It is just me (SGHawkins09) this time so be patient if you send me a message or post a question, I will get back to you as soon as I can. We will do our best to pair you with someone new. Another situation is that you know certain people in real life, and would prefer to paint for someone you don't know. -Special Requests- For the organizer, your painter, or your recipient:
  2. I just finished this little guy. He is a gift for my Mom. I'm pretty darn happy with this guy I used more paints than I previously expected to use. He was a really joy to paint. Let me know what you guys think!
  3. When I got my Secret Sophie assignment and saw that I got @Corporea to paint for, I knew almost instantly what I wanted to paint for her. She put that she likes anything adorable and cute plus I know she likes mouslings so I knew I had to paint one for her. As I was going through my stash I found that had the Santa one and knew it was perfect. I also knew I wanted to pair it with a Christmas tree but it took me a while to settle on how I wanted to do the tree. Mainly I was flipping back and forth between making or buying one. I ended up making one out of greenstuff and am really happy with how it turned out.
  4. Another Christmas ornament made! The ice chunks are, of course, just styrofoam bits. The polar bear was a Schleich; a bit big even for a large bear, but fine for a celestial ursine. Here's the angel outside the ornament. The Enochian glyphs on her cape are intended to read "Stay Frosty."
  5. The last ornament! This one a little more ambitious; a vignette showing perhaps an aspect of the Winter Solstice. The spirit of cold and death being checked. The days are getting longer again now. Here's the Ghost King, in shades of Ice Blue, Toxic Mist, Dark Sky, and Oozing Purple (w/Ushabti Bone). And our heavenly host!
  6. It got late, so change of plans and here he is: Painted in 1 evening, using only 4 colors. I'm pretty happy with how he turned out. Colors: Splintered bone, Turkey Brown, Nightsky Blue and Blackened Brown. I was just going to use the first 3, but decided I needed something darker to finish it up.
  7. My first time entering any sort of competition. So here it is! My version of the Yeti Cheiftan 77434 for LadyStorm's contest. http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/82989-ladystorms-winter-contest-yeti/
  8. I finally got around to decorating the mantle this year. Nothing's newly painted, just gathered together for once.
  9. Even with last month's minis still grumbling on the table, like a Lovecraftian protagonist I shamble onward further...for All Months Are One in Yog-Sothoth! IA! IA!...sorry about that...anyhow here are the upcoming victims.... Santa Mousling and Helper, who are mostly done thankfully. Two Mariel Twinspars. They will be the 3rd and 4th time painting her, and are intended as gifts for the long suffering waitresses who put up with me each Weds. These having an actual time limit, will be started later today. Two Shrines, an Obelisk, and an Eldritch Demon. Only 3 terrain pieces this time so hopefully grey fatigue won't be an issue. 5 Cultists. I'm hoping I can get the Witch Hunters done and off the table before starting these because they're gonna brawl if I don't! 5 Deep Ones. I may attempt some converting/limb movement on the Bones Priest so as to differenciate him from his metal counterpart. The Santa Dwarf is the only other actual Christmas mini in the lineup, (but who knows what the 12 days of Reaper might bring..) and both version of S'Kara the Skoli who I have a vague plan to work into a project involving York Peppermint Patties... And Vikings. Because nothing captures the spirit of the Holidays quite like Vikings! They're might wind up in the January thread however, depending on how far out of the hole I can dig myself...
  10. Because it’s never too early for Christmas themed kickstarters... https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1398817948/geek-and-dice-themed-stockings-delivered-before-ch Although I must admit I prefer the term “nerd” over “geek”.
  11. All these Zombies I've been working on lately have got me wanting to get to started something a little less speed painterly. So I decided to pick up my Christmas Elves from my reaper order over Christmas and get working on them. I got into the grove painting up the naughty elf so all I have is where she stands now. I liked how she was painted up in the store so I used that as my start. Here is how she looks at the start of the WIP: And of course here is the nice one patiently waiting in primer to be started:
  12. I actually bought 01589: Father Christmas two years ago, but I hadn't thought to slap paint on him until now. As I'm done teaching this semester, I had time to prime and paint this guy earlier this afternoon. Took me maybe three hours, which has gotta be some kind of personal best. I did chicken out on his eyes though. My brushes aren't super great and I didn't trust myself not to screw up the eyes/his face, so I didn't try them.
  13. I took out the BBQ and some stuff I bought. Used styrofoam for the base and a Styrofoam Ball ( half of it). Applied some snow an grass flock, glued some trees and figurines in place and done. The houses will light up at night and I added a string of Led lights. Put it in the garden in front of our window/door. So in the evening we can see it from our room. Just a silly idea, maybe you guys like it, because you know...most of you are silly too...
  14. I've been meaning to make a show-off thread for this for a while, but the pictures aren't great and I no longer have the mini because she was a Secret Sophie gift to Inarah last year. Lots of things I'd like to have spent more time on, like the stray red brush stroke I noticed after I'd sent her off. Part of the point of an exchange is that there's a deadline, so that's just the way the cookies crumble. Figured people would really want to be able to see what the back side of the mini looks like now that she's available in the store again. Merry Christmas!
  15. So as some of you may know I'm making a diorama! This will be slow going for a while as I get the materials and then it should be full steam ahead. I've started by procuring another copy of the "telephone box" since I don't really like the first one I did a few years ago. It's not awful but not up to my standard for a Christmas present.
  16. Even though I got these during last year's 12 Days of Reaper, I only just got around to painting them! I tried an experiment with these; painting them first with special Chrome spray paint, and then using Citadel gemstone transparent paints on them: Spiritstone Red, Soulstone Blue, and Waystone Green, in an attempt to given them that lacquered mirror look that real ornaments have. I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. In the second photo, they are shown with Copplestone's "Lovely Assistant" to give a sense of scale with a normal sized human figure.
  17. This is from the latest Randomness thread (I can’t seem to quote directly into a “Create New Topic” page): Notes are cribbed from Wikipedia and other places because I am not an expert on this music. I just enjoy it. I expect to add more songs later. Here’s one of my favorites first. Ríu Ríu Chíu (Spanish, 16th century) Notes (cribbed from online sources): This is a Spanish villancico (a type of song popular between the 15th and 18th centuries) attributed to Mateo Flecha the Elder (d. 1553). It is known from a single manuscript presently in Uppsala, published in 1556. The Monkees, of all people, did a cover of it (this is not that version). The phrase Ríu Ríu Chíu is said to be the cry of an attacking Kingfisher guarding the riverbank from wolves (Sorry, Glitterwolf and Chaoswolf ...). Riu, riu, chiu ... English translation: Riu, riu, chiu The river bank is protected God has kept the wolf From our ewe lamb God has kept the wolf From our ewe lamb The rabid wolf Wanted to bite her But Almighty God Knew how to defend her He willed to make her Unable to sin Even original sin This virgin did not have Riu, riu, chiu... The one who is born Is the Great Monarch Christ the Patriarch Clothed in flesh He has redeemed us By making himself small Though he was infinite He became finite Riu, riu, chiu... He comes to give Life to the dead He comes to repair The fall of all mankind This Child Is the light of day He is the Lamb Of whom St. John spoke Riu, riu, chiu... I saw a thousand Angels Who were singing Flying around Chanting in a thousand voices Saying to the shepherds Glory in Heaven And peace on earth For Jesus is born Riu, riu, chiu... Now we have What we desire Let us go together To present him gifts Let us all give him Our will For he came As our equal Riu, riu, chiu...
  18. I got the Reindeer during last year's 12 Days of Reaper and I looked in the Special Edition figure listing and couldn't find it listed, so don't have a stock number. I recently finished it after several months of sitting on my painting table, half finished. I also painted up the Copplestone Lovely Assistant figure this past week, as I've started queuing up some of my Christmas themed figures for some seasonal painting projects the next couple months.
  19. So, I've had this figure for a while and finally worked up the courage to paint it. I stated in mid-December and finished jsut after Christmas. Not in time to hang it from the tree, but it will be there next year. I wrote the names of of the family (including the rabbits), bu some of the names were too long, so I tried to give the impression that the list was folded over with the letter continuing on the backside.
  20. I had planned to do a bunch of mouselings in november and december.. but work got in the way. I never had a more busy and stressfull december than this year. But in the end I managed to finish two sets... just to late to hang in the Christmas tree.. 😊
  21. Time was a little short to get this done before Christmas, but he is as done as he will get before tomorrow.
  22. My in-laws have a tradition of passing off a joke gift to all the male adults. Someone (it's forgotten who originally was gifted with the slippers) got a pair of knitted size 14 (my in-laws are all over 6'5, I'm the short one at 6'2) slippers in white, orange and green wool. They are ugly. This person then added a small change, like a patch, to each slipper and re-gifted it. The tradition continues. There's one more person I can give these to before it becomes a random (or someone else marries into the family). I'm adding a few quickly painted bones orcs. I would do different ones (because I have doubles of a couple), but apparently they need to be the same. If in the event it's legal, I will be replacing a sniper with a marauder 77042. I will document my quick paintjob in this thread, and then safety pin them to the slippers. I will also be painting a few other bones orcs too - the marauders and Rogan 77224. Photos soon.
  23. I have painted up the Nativity Set as a gift for my girlfriend's parents. They will get it close to the holidays. I added the sheperd with sheep, the donkey and a cow. All Reaper miniatures: https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/nativity/latest/01430 https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/nativity/latest/01433 https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/nativity/latest/01439 https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/cow/sku-down/03719 I put the whole set under a dome. And made some barn soil with putty. WIP here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/69198-nativity-scene-as-a-gift-by-xherman1964/ Only after all was glued together I noticed a small bit of yellow brown on the sheperd's clothing, oh well, let's assume he got a bit dirty dealing with the animals... I hope they will like the gift..
  24. It's time to start looking at working on my Nativity if there's to be any hope of getting it done by Christmas 2016. (And if I can't get it done then I need to find another gift idea for my mom.) I've looked at a lot of other examples and I've got some ideas but I need to formulate a definite plan. The goal is to make a series of three dioramas: angel, shepherds and sheep; wise men with camel; Mary, Joseph, Jesus and stable. The idea is that then they can easily be arranged in different configurations with reduced risk of damage. (If there are 10 little people somewhere then guaranteed a child will try to play with them.) It is likely that they'll get put on either a fireplace mantle or the wide windowsill. Have I mentioned that this will be my first diorama? Nothing like jumping in with both feet! I plan to do the core piece first, and I actually bought the base nativity set last year during the 12 Days of Reaper. Unfortunately this is the part where I'm not quite sure about the composition. I've bought a bunch of wooden plaques and I've got a couple of possible candidates. So the choice comes down to round or rectangle. I'm hoping to include the donkey, which is why it's there. Obviously the barn/baby/Mary/Joseph bit has a traditional presentation. I've been pondering what else I should add to fill out the scene without making it too busy. This is more important with the round one since it feels a bit too large. I'm fine with purchasing more stuff like the farm animals but I don't want to add more people because I want this to be the quiet moment before everyone else shows up. I'll probably go with the classic approach and try and sculpt some extra hay to tie everything together. Feedback very welcome!
  25. I want to give my girlfriend's parents a little gift this X-mas ( well a bit before that). So I decided to make a little vignette of the Nativity Set. I found this nice dome for 5 euros.. I had to skip the idea of the three Kings. But my girl explained to me that they visited later, so it wouldn't be a problem to just use the Nativity set itself, a sheperd and a few animals. Else it would get too crowded on the little wooden plate. The Donkey and Oxen are supposed to keep Baby Jesus warm with their breath. So that's why they stand so close. The Cow will be mutilated converted into an Oxen. Here is the set up. I might have to move them a little more forward to close the gap. **** But Herman December is a long time away! Why start now?**** *** Have you noticed how slow I paint?***
