Hello all!

Recommended Posts

Just checking in!

Nice forum format, by the way. †

I can't speak for the other CAV artists, but I'll be here from time to time in case you guys want to reach me. †Bear in mind I'm just a freelancer, but I still might be able to answer your digital sculpting questions.

Best,

John Bear Ross

Hello, John.

Here's a question for you:

How do you come up with ideas for giant robots that doesn't step on the toes of others, ie: Robotech/GW/Battletech et. al. Without pulling your hair out?

Allo John!

Fantastic work I must say, some of your 'mechs (CAVs?) have that Hercs/Cybrids look from the Cyberstorm/Earthsiege PC games, very cool.

As a Battletech player (CLASSIC Battletech nowadays) I must admit I have used some of those CAVs minis to represent some home made machines or duplicates for lance-size or larger units. What can I say? I love 'em heh heh.

I was hoping artists would speak up!

Have to admit, we don't SciFi here, just do Fantasy.  But we still think y'all are doing wonderful work.

The CAV design work is done mostly by James "Jimbo" Burrell, Reaper's in-house artist, and he's done an amazing job of coming up with a design philosophy that really hasn't been seen elsewhere.

I've come up with a few designs myself, most recently the new Wyvern CAV.  It's really quite easy to stay within the established guidelines for a "design philosophy" in the CAV universe.

CAV really isn't going for the flashy, super-hero-mecha look, but instead for a utilitarian military approach that appeals the the "plausible" sci-fi gamer.  It's one of the reasons I enjoy the game.

Best,

John Bear Ross

I've noticed these to be fairly common characteristics:

-square, blocky frame and limbs

-Arms ARE guns, no articulated fingers or anything

-upthrust knee protection, rumored to be like samurai armor

-ball-like knee/ankle joints, fairly massive feet

-Weapons are usually ON the frame, not IN the frame, which is the most major difference from That Other Game that I'm aware of.

This is gonna sound strange, but...Here goes anyway! :p

I like the CAV toes.

Ok, enough silly-ness from me; I think I'm going to go to sleep now. LOL
