Do you have a family member who drives you NUTS?

Yeah, I sometimes think it's natural...as in that individual thrives off drama and so saves it up/manufactures it for when things get too boring/normal.

try to just smile and nod, and not get drawn into it.  Sometimes I'm even successful.

Such would require real trains that are able to actually follow their schedules, and be at prices that are cheaper than flying first class, or even flying economy...

I ride Edmonton's LRT and it's okay, I guess... Calgary's was more useful when I lived there...

And as for the second bit, I'm referring to Via Rail, which would be a much better service if it could actually maintain its timetables, and ran at actually decent times.  Twice now I've considered riding it, and both times I've gone "I can do the entire trip including car rental, hotels, and fuel for cheaper than that..."  there are way too many reports of people getting kicked off the train an hour away from their destination, and being put into cabs because the crew ran out of hours...

Now, if it were European levels of service and train offerings (or Japan), yeah, without a doubt I'd be all over that.

Yes, I do.  Probably because I so rarely get to ride them. Supposedly a light rail line will make it over to our neck of the woods in the next few years, at which point I may learn to dislike them.

I do. Rode them all the time while living in Europe. There's something about taking an overnight train in a sleeping compartment from one country to the next that makes you almost feel like you are Hercule Poirot traveling on the Orient Express... minus the murder.

I wish we had a more developed railway system in the US. It'd be a nice way to get from nearby places without having to drive.

Yes.  My father has always been a train fan and model railroader, so I grew up with vacations built around railroad museums (though not actual distance-covering train trips).  If I need to get down to DC from where I’m at, commuter rail is my first choice, and I enjoy the subway trains too.  The nearest operating preserved steam train is in Strasburg, Pennsylvania, about an hour from here, although I haven’t been up to ride recently.  Younger son, about to be back in the area raised the question of whether we might go soon, as he hasn’t been lately either.

The train bug has apparently been passed on.  I got a text message with a picture one day when my younger one had been to the Capitol with a science policy event visit and had a ride on the Capitol subway about getting a super-rare rail achievement. 😆

My most unusual railroad experience has been two chances (at different museums) to pump the handcar.

Yes. The last time I was on a train in the U.S. was as a kid, so it was a fun experience. I don't know how it's changed/what I'd think as an adult. I rode trains a lot while I was in Italy with the Navy; I enjoyed that.
