Quizzle for 14 October 2022

Do you have regular plans for Friday Nights?

Yes, I work until midnight every Friday. Some Fridays I am able take off earlier if production gets finished, but so far I have always stayed; I prefer to get my 40-hour work week in and have a full paycheck instead of a fluctuating one.

I usually avoid sequels if the first film has a satisfying ending. I did like following all the collateral damage in the John Wick flicks though.

Best: A number of good candidates, but on balance I will say Aliens.

Worst: Hands-down, Highlander 2.

What he said.

What is the worst?

I think that Aliens is the best sequel I've seen.

The worst is a bit more difficult, because I don't generally show a lot of "loyalty" to franchises.  If I didn't think that a sequel was necessary, or if I think that a sequel looks bad, I won't watch it just because I saw the one before it.  And there are some bad movies that still manage to be fun even if they're awful.

So I'm trying to think of it as movies in a series that, if they're on TV, I'll either find something else to watch or even do chores in order to avoid it.  I'll avoid reboots as they're sometimes not "in" the original series or have come after my interest in a series has waned (sometimes the same thing happens with sequels and I'll just lose interest in a series).  I'm sure I've seen others, but I don't have enough in the memory banks to make judgements, so the pool I'm looking at is:

  • Alien: Resurrection
  • Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (it has its moments, but is generally not something I'll willingly watch)
  • Highlander 3: The Sorcerer (I never saw H2, but H3 just felt like a lazy retelling of the best parts of H1 without managing to bring anything good to the series)
  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi (TLJ killed my interest in the series, and I still haven't seen Rise of Skywalker)
  • Jaws 4: The Revenge (watched once in my teen years, so it's difficult to really remember enough about it to judge)
  • Jurassic World (only watched on the insistence of Youngest and her now Ex, is a gratuitous and empty spectacle)
  • Batman Forever (another gratuitous and empty spectacle, I hear George Clooney blames himself for the failure of the franchise: I blame Joel Schumacher for not understanding why the Burton/Keaton movies succeeded)
  • Star Trek: Nemesis (again, I don't remember much)

So, from that pool, I think I have to name Highlander 3 and Jaws 4 as the worst.  The others merely substandard stones 'round the necks of their respective franchises.

Best is hard to say, there are a lot of good sequels out there, IMO. I'll agree on Aliens, though; great movie!

Worst is also hard to say; if a movie really sucks, either I don't see it if I am forewarned, or I actively try to forget it. That said, Jaws 4 was pretty awful.

Usually the second movie afterwards is worse, might be due to expectations. Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi were both pretty solid. Episodes VII, VIII, and IX are stinkers and should be flushed down the toilet of history.

Hard to pick a single best or worse sequel, there's quite a few of both out there!

Already been a few good examples, but for best sequel I'm going with Captain America:- The Winter Soldier, I still think it's the only Marvel sequel to actually improve on a previous one.

For worst, I'm going with one of the Hellraiser sequels. I love the franchise but some of the later ones they churned out, just to hold on to the rights, are truly dire.

Worst:

I expect it would have been . . .
jaws-back-to-the-future.jpg

Jaws 19

…the movie that was never made.

Having to remember which are the film franchises where I have seen some or all of the sequels is making this difficult.

I found a headline.
From Washington Post, no less.

“…Battleship: 10 things that make it a classic American blockbuster…”

Now I have solid evidence that the opinions of WashPo are not worth the cheap newsprint paper they might be printed on.

Battleship was the stupidest, most pig-ignorant, dumbelf, movie I have ever seen. Ever.

Does it / Can it count as a sequel? Since it was inspired by and a follow-on to a board game? Kinda seems like stretching the definition a [bit].

There was a notion to make a Battleship 2But the first one was so bad it torpedoed any plans for the second.
