I wonder if squirrel or hog will be the next new and trendy thing (you can get brushes with either, I think they're mainly used for oils but I don't recall)

Yeah, I’m always willing to experiment, but it’d be nice not to have to invest quite so much in order to get past the first round.

I was ordering some Rosemary kolinsky  brushes not too long ago.  I wanted a replacement for a nice, series 22, and I wanted some less expensive 33s for slightly harsher stuff (priming, metallics, citadel shades…).  But then I saw these series 93 “spotters”.  Relatively inexpensive and very short and small diameter.  I figured they’d be nice for pupils.  Jury is still out (they hold very little paint, but they are pretty stiff) but the point is, a $5 single brush experiment is a cheap date if it turns out to fill a new niche.  A $50 set of brushes I never use is less appealing.

I wish it was only $5 for some of the Rosemary and Co brushes I want, but some of them are closer to $40 CAD, like the Series 60's...  Errr, they start around $30 but quickly skyrocket.

Thankfully the 772's start around $17 CAD, and the 770's are at the $18 mark... And then there's the Red Dot Collection..

interesting!  Do you use these for minis?  What’s the pro/con of sword points?

I picked up a dagger out of curiosity (Princeton 3750) and absolutely love doing oil painting with it.  Can get some interesting blends going with it.  Haven't tried with acrylics, as I suspect the texture they can leave behind wouldn't be as nice with such paints.

I was looking at sword brushes for watercolour use.  I like how a single brush can do so many different kinds of shapes and textures, if that makes any sense.

I've used both before.  Squirrel is good for soft watercolor effects, it carries a LOT of liquid and tends to let it go in a controled fashion, but it's soft and has very limted spring, so it doesn't tend to hold a sharp point while painting.  given the size of the miniatures we work on I've never been happy with it for that.

Hog is the opposite. Very stiff.  Makes an excellent stippiling brush or heavy body brush where you want the texture from the brush marks.
