Lately I've been working on things that have languished for too long and this project is no exception. I bought Cmon's Kick The Board Game over a year ago and immediately cleaned and primed the miniatures. Since then they've simply sat in a box unpainted. Last night however I finally got started.

Having bought this game mostly for the hero miniatures I decided to start this project with the generic enemy figures. My thinking is that this will give me a better understanding of the miniatures before moving on to the hero figures I actually  care about (and bought the game for).

As the generic foot soldiers don't exactly have uniforms apart from their masks I decided a hodge podge color scheme would be best. Starting off though I quickly decided to paint all the coats as leather jackets. That decision called for a bit of reference photo gathering, which had the added benefit of throwing off all my targeted ads as now Google is convinced I need a new jacket.

Armed with nice reference photos of the various colored jackets I intend to paint I finally began. The first batch recieved a bright red leather jacket based off the jacket seen in Fight Club.

After all of that not much thought went into the rest of their outfits. Honestly I basically just grabbed some of my go to colors and got to work. I think it worked out though and I ended up with some passable miniatures after only one night of work.

Tonight I started my second batch. For these guys I also went with a red leather but in a darker shade. I didn't quite finish them in one session but they're close.

Choosing to paint two reds may have been a mistake as they look nearly identical. Side by side however the difference can be seen. So after only two nights I've nearly finished two batches of generic criminals with only three more to go before I start on the bosses. I'd call that a good start.

Not too much progress tonight as I guess I just wasn't in the mood. Today was pretty busy so maybe I'd just prefer to turn my brain off with some mindless TV instead of painting. That being said I did finish the second batch.20221027_205530.thumb.jpg.78974e7a96ba9988dc6688f0c925e3ac.jpg

I also started the third batch but only got their jackets basecoated.20221027_212350.thumb.jpg.56401744a923657e2ca4b22b2ec39561.jpg

I had hoped to be finished with the generic enemies by now but that just didn't happen. Yet again we're passing another cold around the household which has slowed hobby progress amongst many other "real" things. Tonight though I felt good enough to get back at it and it was a pretty good night. The batch of light brown jackets were finished.20221030_205839.thumb.jpg.a398dd396aec83bc83dbdadabaf8f557.jpg

I also started the worn brown leather jackets on the fourth batch.

Initially I thought I had over drybrushed their jackets but after letting the color sit for a bit they're looking pretty good.

Cold is still ongoing though luckily I'm the only one that is still sick. That wasn't the only reason for my absence at the desk however as the main culprit was actually movies. Finding a few cheap movie collections recently I opted to spend my hobby time watching those instead of painting. Having finally worked through this movie backlog I'm back at it tonight.

As I've taken some time away from the desk it took a whole session just to finish the batch of worn leather jackets. It's amazing just how much your hands seem to forget without daily practice, my speed absolutely plummets after any amount of time away from the desk.

I also quickly basecoated the last batch's jackets before calling it a night.

Made it back to the desk tonight and finished the last batch of generic enemies.

Taking a moment to appreciate the group as a whole I think the decision not to paint them as one giant batch was a good one. Honestly I think a horde of black coated gang members (as they technically should have been) may have looked cool but could just have easily looked boring. I think the sculpts benefit from a bit of variety in their color schemes.

Obviously there is still work to be done but it's just simple things. They'll probably recieve my typical wash but I'm still thinking about their bases. Seeing as they're game pieces I'm leaning towards just a simple black base, but we'll see what happens.

For now I'm ready to take a break from batch painting and start in on the villain models, starting with the mobsters.

After a break from painting and a quick little passion project I finally got back to these miniatures. It wasn't exactly a productive session however; I did nearly finish a basecoat though, so that's something.20230117_220949.thumb.jpg.d5980b762d4e296a157c1813d4ac56dd.jpg20230117_220958.thumb.jpg.e82d08d904394550993fbc5b9d182d61.jpg

I'm actually a little stumped as to what exactly this figure is holding. Honestly it looks like an ornate pick but I just don't know. Looking around online I couldn't find anything either but it just may be that my Googlefu is bad.

Nearly finished the "upstanding citizens" yesterday when I lucked into an extra painting session during the day. I didn't update at that point because I expected to get my regular painting session in as well. Obviously that didn't happen and I had an early night instead.

Which brings us to today which again surprised me with an extra painting session. This allowed me to finish the figures eyes and start planning the next figure's color scheme. 20230120_143332.thumb.jpg.b6788e6d5664fd4c2c068d1bb92c1d21.jpg20230120_143346.thumb.jpg.16fbbef6c69ceeedffc5bfcf180c9ef7.jpg

During my regular evening session I started work on Jimmy Kim (a named enemy) and even managed to finish him.

20230120_195742.thumb.jpg.6b8923def9c470512138d6d03394a7c6.jpg20230120_195752.thumb.jpg.98dae7fad908d1f9124dc3669123f179.jpg

Though they're really just black amorphous blobs I'm pretty happy with his how his playing cards turned out.

If that wasn't enough I then moved on to Eddie Lomas who painted up even faster than Jimmy Kim.

Still in the groove I moved on to the real stars of the night Kill Shot and Galaxicon. 20230120_220844.thumb.jpg.2f220dea3a82ee55619412e361adbe5c.jpg20230120_220857.thumb.jpg.62c45f5b0a9542175c3c3d962f2bc6da.jpg

These are the first two figures in this project that I truly enjoyed painting. Not only are they my favorites so far they were just a blast to paint. It only took thirty-two miniatures to get to the fun stuff.

As I've now gotten into the more colorful characters this project will really speed up. Finding myself with a free Saturday I spent the morning catching up on chores but the afternoon was spent at my desk. I even managed to finish three figures.

20230121_192703.thumb.jpg.c9e37f1dbb54f84f491402c66b6ffbdd.jpg20230121_192720.thumb.jpg.8f294c26c9b387bfbc52af2975150d82.jpg

The white Ninja esque figure will need a wash but as I'm planning on applying wash to the whole project at the end he is finished for now.

After that I spent some time mulling over the final villain's color scheme. I had intended to use the film's scheme as I really like it. Looking over the rest of the project however convinced me to stick with the comic's color scheme, the figure is modeled that way after all.

20230121_201111.thumb.jpg.02575288ea053e97a0ee47a722d13069.jpg

While basecoating the last villain I realized two heroes also needed a large red basecoat so I did them all together.

Got back to it tonight and I'm happy to report I've finished another three miniatures. 20230124_221037.thumb.jpg.03a15d028db3ac8ce09c87dff80915ea.jpg20230124_221153.thumb.jpg.1725cb4461d5d7809b50476c3f6ad9b5.jpg

While painting Dr. Gravity I simply couldn't stop smiling. Something about looking at the art on his player card, remembering Donald Faison's performance, and painting his simple yet interesting costume just made painting this figure fun. There's certainly been a lot of red in this project, almost bookending it, but much to my surprise Dr. Gravity has been my favorite even more than Big Daddy.

Today ended up being a good day for painting. My next batch of three were started and finished. I'll only be posting pictures of two however as one probably skates the line of good taste and forum rules. However if you're familiar with the property or even this particular box you know who I'm talking about. 20230126_212040.thumb.jpg.7f93d62e2321b439908bf2da4a13af92.jpg20230126_212052.thumb.jpg.ccfd6141332267bf302f3788f9ffefb7.jpg

After that I moved on to the second from last miniature. It really only recieved it's green and flesh basecoat but already its looking pretty good.

20230126_213736.thumb.jpg.ba34fc2ba86c2d7ec9638fdd2654d1e1.jpg

Hopefully by this time tomorrow this figure will be finished and I can move on to my favorite miniature of the box.

After a good painting session the last two figures are finished. As expected I worked way harder and spent more time painting the Colonel than the actual main character.

20230127_222046.thumb.jpg.522948b41870a23c07ba3473546ab3ad.jpg20230127_222130.thumb.jpg.1dbb1bdaca0cb9261ebf083ffd68c2da.jpg

The Colonel's camouflage is a bit too muted and is basically invisible except under the proper lighting conditions. I've decided to leave it as is however because under the right light it does look very nice.

Now comes the process of applying a wash to all the figures, sealing them, and finally painting their bases. The end of this project is in sight though and hopefully I'll be able to actually try out the game sometime next month with fully painted miniatures.

Yesterday I applied wash to all the figures. It didn't dramatically change most of them however so pictures seemed unnecessary. Today I went ahead and sealed the figures in a quick session early in the day. In my usual evening session I painted and sealed the bases.20230129_220400.thumb.jpg.2c5a1fc15a715f4bb1cef5a5c579fe0e.jpg

As expected I did go for generic black bases. Though they may see play in actual tabletop games these will mostly be game pieces for their board game so black seemed appropriate.

As the base's sealer hasn't had time to dry final pictures will have to wait for tomorrow.
