Anywhere from a few hours to a few years. Note: NOT purple. I tend to work on multiple things at once, so a standard tabletop figure takes 6 or 7 hours, but that could be broken up over a week or more.

Nope. I'd love a bit of dedicated space for all my hobby stuff, but it just don't have the space, so there's bits of it everywhere. 49 minutes ago, TaleSpinner said: Miniature Monday, Nov. 14: How long does it take you to paint a miniature? Too dang long! A normal sized mini takes me roughly 15 hours (It's 1 to 2 hours of painting a day spread over 10-ish days), my stuff should look a lot nicer considering the time I sink into them.

Last move was 13 years ago give or take. It took a couple months before I was able to do anything with it. It was 6 years later we turned it into the game room it is now. See my signature tag to see its makeover. No it is still not the way I want it...🤣

Ever since I got back into the hobby in 2013, I've moved three times, and every time, my living room becomes the de facto hobby area. Hobby desk right in middle of the room, facing the TV, with the laptop, lamps and tools right on the desk. Paints are in a stack of caddies within reach. Minis are stored in several crates in another room. At my last move, I carefully planned where everything would go, so I was settled in very quickly. Sure, I could be better arranged, but that would require a larger home instead of an apartment.

I think about six hours is the record for longest-most time spent. But that is not all in one session. Shortest-least time spent is less than 10 minutes? The figures in my Warlord Warband got batch painted in a very simple way. I once painted a little dwarf in two hours for a speed paint session which was judged at the end. I think I got 2nd place out of ten entries.

Cranky Dog
2 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: Miniature Monday, Nov. 14: How long does it take you to paint a miniature? Excluding ReaperCon classes/events, it takes me many hours spread over several sessions. Mostly because I've painted PC characters for games I'm in, or for Reaper Discord challenges. Both demand that I try my best for something that looks good. I've done very little speed painting, but I know most of the techniques (haven't tried the Slap Chop yet). But I am quicker if I paint monsters, multiples of the same model (goblins, skeletons, etc.), or that share a common color scheme.

I usually work in batches, so it is hard to tell. I am strictly tabletop quality, so not over 2 hours total per mini. 3 minutes ago, malefactus said: I seems like FOREVER...forever is probably about 5 to 8 hours depending on the mini & the level of energy/enthusiasm/motivation I can work up. Well with the use of speed painting competitions, 45 mins plus time for touch up and details. I need to use this as my model for painting going forward. I have many WIP with time from first paint to current state, the clock needed it multiple calendars.

It seems to vary depending on what I want to do with it... - Experimenting with oils on a Termagaunt, to the point where I'm trying out a variety of new techniques and really having fun with it? Such breaks down to about 2.5-4 hours per mini. - Something I'm putting my "normal" amount of effort into, and it isn't hyper-detailed? Typically 4-6 hours averaged out. - Infinity models buck this trend somewhat due to their detail but also the skirmish nature of the game, so typically take 6.5-10 hours per model. - A hero, or something I'm wanting to put a lot of attention into, or I'm using to try and push my skills at something? 10-25 hours. Size also affects things, as a small piece of terrain I can usually get out in an about an hour or so, but that Crashed Aquila Lander was something closer to 25 hours due to the sheer size of it (with something like two hours going to just adding in tufts) Edited November 14, 2022 by WhiteWulfe

Well I haven't moved in 26 years, and the moving of my studio is one factor that keeps us from moving. Going to need to find just the right place. My studio is fully tweaked out ATM to be prefect for everything I do. It takes up about 1/3 of our unfinished basement. My wife has dubbed it "Man Land." Along the inner wall from north to south: - Z-Brush sculpting station with my laptop, and Cintiq, with carded minis, trophy, and misc shelving above it to the ceiling. - Table divided in 1/2 at a L to the sculpting table. North half is a mini painting station with my wall of paint racks acting as the divider. South half is my hand sculpting, print cleaning, and airbrush station. - Bookshelves with all my reference material, gaming books, and our fiction collection. Outer wall: - Bulk mini storage (mostly Bones) - Rolling mill and wire draw station - Photo booth - Long term wine storage - Vented 3D printer station - Reconfigurable Vent hood for 3D Print washer/burnout oven/gold refining - Metal melting and annealing station - Metal pickling station - Vacuum caster - Casting equipment and materials storage - Jewelry bench - Polishing station - Stone and findings storage - Trim saw station - Cabbing station I pretty much retool and repurpose things when I need to improve the workflow or add tools and such. It is a very efficient workflow space though now, so I can't see wanting to move it without having a space that is similar or better. 3 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: Miniature Monday, Nov. 14: How long does it take you to paint a miniature? Too long. I have a difficult time dialing back my perfectionism and painting for fun. When I am working on a mini for ReaperCon Open, 30 to 50 hours is not uncommon. I seldom paint more than that though these days, devoting most of my free time to sculpting or jewelry, but I am trying to have Miniature Painting Mondays where I paint every Monday night (starting today). I want to get more things painted this year, and reawaken my speed painting techniques to get it down to 4 to 10 hours a mini for gaming and fun. I also want to paint Arakoth the Ancient for my 2023 ReaperCon entry, and NOT start the month before the Con this year. I had planned to paint it last year, but between Dark Sword and Reaper sculpting requests, I didn't get time to start a mini until July, so I scaled it back and did my Catoblepas instead. We'll see what this year brings.

This is the first place I've been able to have a dedicated hobby space, and it took me about two years to get it set up the way I wanted it. Of course, then I get more stuff and end up needing to pull everything out and rearrange it every so often. That seems to be about every two to three years. I'm starting to think it's time to do that again. 3 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: Miniature Monday, Nov. 14: How long does it take you to paint a miniature? Depends on what the figure is and how much effort I want to put into it. Most PC sized minis just get a quick one or two hours spent on them. More if I'm painting it to sell it or for a special character (or there's just too many bits, looking at you Pathfinder minis). Scenery bits usually take a lot less time. Bigger items kind of vary a lot depending on whether I just need it painted for the table or if I'm trying to paint for display (which doesn't happen too often). For instance the Mossbeard figure from Bones 4 took about 3 hours from start to finish and has made several appearances on the table. But I also have the Frost Giant Huntress from the same kickstarter on my workbench right now and it's been there for three weeks slowly getting worked on. And it's likely to be on there for a couple of more weeks before it's complete. It's going to get shown off on the discord though, possibly even on here if I get around to making a show off thread. Zink
4 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: Miniature Monday, Nov. 14: How long does it take you to paint a miniature? Absolute fastest is my 1/285 WW2 armoured vehicles. Not including drying time about 10 minutes each. Prime in a camo green, very dark brown, almost black wash, dry brush lighter green or grey, pick out a few metal details and tracks and then glue some flock/sand on the bases. Average for a 28mm man sized minis is about an hour for npcs and large units. Longest is around 7 hours for more important characters.
