What one thing can you tell others about in your local area that will instantly identify where in the world you are from (other than the name of your area, obviously)?

We, not me personally but the area, are well known if not famous for our duckling & potatoes.

The potatoes are featured in the song Yes We Have No Bananas.

Great, now I thought about it too hard and have that song stuck in my head.

Would replacing it with another song for a nearby city help.  How about 30,000 pounds of Bananas by Harry Chapin instead?

In general, south central buckeye nation.  More specifically, the first and third capital of the buckeye obsessed state.  (We may have only been 3rd for a few days while the government was moving between 2 and 4, but it still counts.)

City contains "the mall".  As in the one that held world's largest indoor shopping center for ages (and is still the largest in North America), is bigger than the Mall of America, and still contains the world's longest/tallest indoor roller coaster (not that it's running right now, but still).

The Mindbender.  The Drop of Doom (although that was replaced years ago).  The Galaxy Twister (also replaced years ago).  World Waterpark (that doesn't have anything "world" about it, and by modern standards isn't really all that big even for an indoor waterpark).

There's also conveniently a Deserres in said mall too, plus a bunch of boutique shops I could care less about.   But Deserres is nice, probably because it's an art store.

It formerly held dolphins, but they've been replaced with sea lions.

It also has a replica of the Santa Maria, so now it's not only a giant tourist trap but also a wedding venue trap too!

We used to have a fire breathing dragon (yes, it breathed ACTUAL FIRE) in the phase four theater that's had a few different names over the years.

This mall was also sued by Disney over the name "Fantasyland", and when it was eventually settled the hotel was allowed to keep its name but the theme park became Galaxyland and got a terrifying mascot.

Them's fighting words.  You should try the genuine stuff, not what's sold as Canadian Maple Syrup down there.... 😛

But you also have to have it, on a stick, in February, in negative don't look we all know it's bloody cold temperatures.

Home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  I grew up just south of here that Four College students were shot on May 4th 1970

I'm not from here originally, but I looked up some trivia:

  • location of the first U.S. military fort in the upper Mississippi region
  • location of the first U.S. military cemetery in the upper Midwest
  • [former] home of the Sheaffer Pen Corporation
  • Famous people you've never heard of:
    • Black Hawk - Sauk leader
    • Keokuk - Sauk leader
    • Orion Clemens - he had a famous brother that used to visit a lot.
    • Dick Klein - Founder of Chicago Bulls
    • Elsa Maxwell - she even got a reference in Superman #1
    • Jeremy Soule - Some of my coworkers remember him from high school. If you play video games, you've probably heard his music.

It depends on what you like.  There really are a number of things the city is well-known for, although we're probably best known for our Oracle at the moment.

Some of the other things:

Spoiler

Movies/TV:

Fred Astaire

Marlon Brando

Henry Fonda and Peter Fonda both spent considerable time here.

Jorge Garcia

Gabrielle Union

Nick Nolte

Alexander Payne

Jamie King

Paula Zahn

Commerce/Finance:

Oracle of...

Union Pacific

History:

Gerald R. Ford

Malcolm X

Music:

Saddle Creek Records

311

Preston Love

Mannheim Steamroller

C.W. McCall

Grand Funk's "young chiquitas"

Bob Sieger's long and lonesome highway East...

Counting Crows put us "somewhere in middle America"

Sports:

College World Series

Food:

Reuben Sandwich Birthplace (contested)

Folks ship our steaks everywhere (IIRC, they earned a mention in "The West Wing," but most people I've talked to have never had one).
