Would you rather meet a live scarecrow or a crow that could talk?

We used to have a talking crow at the wildlife rehab facility I worked at many years ago. Being a crow, the conversations were quite lacking. But he was just mimicking human speech. Still, he was kind of a smartass.

Now a live scarecrow would be pretty neat. Unless, as Chaoswolf points out, it's the murdery kind. But that's what they make Zippo lighters for.

Expanding on my answer above.

My wife just reminded me that Sammy, that was the crow's name, also liked to mimic other animals at the rehab facility. Especially the Great Horned Owl in the enclosure next to him. The sound of another owl would get the real one all worked up and acting territorial. Often he would do that when we were in there cleaning up the owl enclosure and Zeus, the owl, would automatically get defensive with whoever was in there. Un-fun fact, it's no fun being in an enclosed space with a predatory bird when he's mad as hell.

Pretty certain that's how the crow entertained itself. So yeah, talking crows are agents of chaos.

The bird. It's The Raven you have to be afraid of. Why would you want to have a conversation with a creature that has to go see the wizard for a brain? I get enough of that already.

What is your favorite fall food ? (…or dish, or recipe or desert?)

With the sub-zero temperatures and amount of snow we got in the past week, I'm changing my answer to winter food.

So warm hearty soups is my answer. Though almost anything warm qualifies when it's cold.

What kind of scarecrow are we talking about? Wizard of Oz? Howl's moving castle? Batman villain? Slasher movie?

Probably safer to go with the crow.

Even then, a talking crow may just be there to portend my impending doom. Though the news would be a downer, I wouldn't blame the crow for it.

Cassoulet.  Which is really just a fussy version of beans and sausage… plus duck!

I think the live scarecrow might be less dangerous… and I’m in agreement that a raven would even more of a problem.

digression: years back I used to go up to the Canmore/Banff area to climb frozen waterfalls.  three of us stashed our packs at the base of a climb and went up.  A few hours later, we got back.  The packs were unzipped and small bags strewn across the snowfields.  My sandwich was gone, and my first aid kit was unzipped and unrolled.  What was missing?  A few emergency packages of Gu (sugar + caffeine)?  Little crows feet were all over, but no other prints in the snow except ours.  As we gathered stuff up and headed out, we came across another group heading up.  “Hey man,” they said “what were those ravens doing with your pack?  We saw a whole group of them there!”  Man those birds are smart…

I'm not sure whether it was crows or ravens, but I was working in Ft St John one summer at a turnaround at a gas plant. They couldn't find one of the workers, so they evacuated the plant, forcing everyone to muster across the road. I was working out of a toy hauler trailer, and I left the doors open to have light and air. When I got back, my little takeaway had holes pecked in it, the fruit and sandwich were missing and so were the cookies. The birds did it. My crew thought that was hilarious and wrote up bird hazard analysis sheets and posted them up all over inside the trailer.

A talking scarecrow just seems like it's asking for trouble.

A talking crow should be easier to handle if things go sideways.  Although it would probably just say things like: "shiny," "that roadkill sure looks good," "I'll bet there's plenty to eat in that garden over there," and "aaagh--broccoling talking scarecrows!"
