TGP
Friday, Nov. 25; (2of2): (For those in the RoW—outside the US) Is there a fall holiday or tradition that has disappeared since you were a kid, and would you like for it to return?

Thanksgiving is still a wonderful day of seeing folks I love & overeating just a bit. Now, though, there are so many folks that were part of my boyhood memories who are no longer around. They're absence brings a certain sadness to the day, but the memories of their presence adds to the joy of the day. 6

No idea, I don't really pay much attention to the event, although I like to playfully bug Americans about how Thanksgiving was last month... 2 hours ago, TGP said: Friday, Nov. 25; (2of2): (For those in the RoW—outside the US) Is there a fall holiday or tradition that has disappeared since you were a kid, and would you like for it to return? I'd love it if xmas music weren't being blared at the supermarket until the second week of December. That's a tradition that really should come back. We've already had it for two weeks, like c'mon, it's terrible music 99% of the time, go back to the usual terrible other music that's normally played. 7

Nothing comes to mind. We only have just a few holidays in this period. it does lose a lot of it's magic when you grow older though

If you like savory recipes using other squash you might like pumpkin minus the "pumpkin spice." I made a pumpkin soup a few weeks ago that was similar to butternut squash soup. I have a religious objection to eating any vegetable that's orange or yellow aside from corn and carrots. 4 hours ago, TGP said: Friday, Nov. 25; (1of2): How does Thanksgiving differ now than from when you were a child? Since I'm no longer forced to celebrate it, I can actually appreciate the true sentiment behind the holiday even if I don't choose to participate in the rituals of it.

We still have it with my father's side of the family. It used to be in an aunt and uncle's house with all the descendants of my grandmother and grandfather there. Now it is held in a church fellowship hall (where we used to borrow their table and chairs) and several sides of the family do not attend. Yesterday there were 34 people attending. At one time the number was 72. We are down to two of my aunts alive. When they are gone, I will be the third oldest (or the oldest on they times my sister and brother-in-law are not there) in attendance. I don't think that I am ready to be the patriarch of the family. 7

Well, we eat a bit less now. Still more than we should, but less than we used to. Even Eldest's Husband commented about how he just couldn't eat like he did when he was 20 (he's only 30). I guess the main thing is that what used to encompass up to 20 is now down to 9--including a newborn. The "procedure" of the day is mostly intact, though.

I miss getting home with all of the family on our earlier Thanksgiving, but I don't see that coming back any time soon due to Covid (both my folks have compromised immune systems).

It seems more hectic now than it used to; as a child, I wasn't responsible for anything other than staying out of the way, and eating. Now, I'm much more involved in all the 'behind the scenes' part of it. Additionally, the gatherings are much smaller now; my family is spread literally from coast to coast, so it's not as easy to get everyone together.

Primarily the family no longer makes any attempt to gather for the occasion. My family stopped when my grandparents passed, and his family stopped when his folks passed. Husband and I still do the traditional foods but, like others have said, a lot less of it.
ejala
We've downsized things a lot over the years. As a child I was allowed to choose which set of antique dishes we'd use, and we would fix everything on Thursday, maybe pies Wednesday. We got away from fancy dishes some time ago. Now that it's just dad and I, we spread out the cooking. Pies were done last week and gone by Tues. Sunday we baked sweet potatoes. Monday we cooked the turkey and mashed potatoes. Tues we had leftovers. Weds we pan fried the leftover sweets, Thurs potato patties. More leftovers today. Stuffing might get done tomorrow. More pie might come along too.

Not too much, we never really did celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving in my family, though I did with my in-laws before the pandemic.

Now, my wife and I are the central family point as our parents have passed away and we lost my brother in law. So now the kids see us as the stable point where we gather.

Halloween decorations is a big one. It used to be that the majority of houses used to decorate a lot for it, but it no longer what it once was. Ironically it seems that commercialism and the prevalence of easy-to-obtain candy has made it feel less special for people.
