Spying on the neighbors. 6

Probably. That might explain why, despite trying to be friendly, I can count the interactions with my neighbors on one hand in the almost two years I've been here in Texas. >Shrugs< Their loss. Since we have spoken so little, I can only assume they think awful things about me because I'm from New York. WhiteWulfe
1 hour ago, TaleSpinner said: Tuesday, Nov 8: Do you have or do anything that makes your neighbors think you're a bit odd? Oh, I wouldn't doubt it. Some probably think it's odd I have my curtains drawn all the time (to control the amount of light coming in, as well as deter any ideas thieves may get by seeing something), and I've gotten several comments about why I'm so defensive about my parking spot when I don't own a vehicle (it's so guests and/or delivery drivers have somewhere to park, and y'know, it's ~my~ parking stall)... But at the same time some seem to think it's odd I don't really go out and do much. Well, thing is about going out to do things is such costs money, and I'd rather put the money into killing off debts as well as getting things that are longer lasting (read: more art supplies and/or models, and tools to support such things). Some circles I'm not really active in look at me weird as to why I'll look at the total cost of doing something (like say a convention), instead of just the cost to get in. I wish a weekend event only cost $50, trust me on that one (I want to do a con that's held near me, but it doesn't take long to realize that what others are saying is "just $50" also has $500 in hotel costs, two tickets required, a food budget needed, and then having money for the dealer's den is also very very handy). I'm not a penny pincher, just someone who realizes there's only so much money and wants to ensure there's fewer regrets at the end of the day, and in the end, I find it more relaxing to sit at my workbench or art station and unwind (as opposed to being in social situations all weekend, and then needing a few days to recover). But I haven't really talked with my neighbours, most of us keep to ourselves because of the area we're in. 54 minutes ago, TaleSpinner said: Or, you could try talking to them. I suspect "sorry can't answer door, have to watch the fire" may play into things a bit, as not everyone understands that casting jewellery is something that you kind of can't safely walk away from.

Thoramel
1 hour ago, TaleSpinner said: Tuesday, Nov 8: Do you have or do anything that makes your neighbors think you're a bit odd? Probably everything at this point. When we bought into the area it was pretty much a 100% working class neighborhood with a good mix of people. Which is exactly where we fit in at. I got along with most of my neighbors then and interacted with as many folks as I could. Now, a decade later, it's where folks with too much money come to live. And I don't have much in common with them. And I don't just mean upper middle class people. My recent selection of neighbors includes professional athletes, tech investors, politicians, a male model, and a number of investment bankers. There's also a ton of folks who don't appear to work at all, they just seem to be wealthy for no reason. Some of what probably marks me out as odd to them includes things like getting up before dawn to go work, not driving a super expensive vehicle, actually needing a job, doing my own work on things like lawn care and home repairs, and the list goes on and on. I've been to some parties the newer neighbors have thrown, and generally tried to interact with them in a positive way. But when you are surrounded by rich folks and trust fund people, and you're not one of them, it is really hard to find common ground on anything. That's not to say there's no one left in the neighborhood that would find us normal, they're just becoming a minority these days.

Actually, very few of my neighbors know about that, only the ones I am close to. My weirdness here is because I live in the Suburbs, but act like I live in the country, doing as much as I can with my 1/3 acre lot. A classic you can take the boy out of the country, but not the country out of the boy. Some of the more obvious points: I have a multi-species lawn, because I like bees and wildlife and don't want to spray toxic chemicals all summer long just to get a green carpet, ewww. I like dandelions; they are pretty and taste good. I built and use a large compost bin instead of putting my lawn waste in those brown bags to be hauled away by someone. What a waste of good compost. Any trimmings from the apple trees or other trees or shrubs I season in a pile in a spot out of sight on the side of the house. I then burn it in my fire dish instead of taking it to...well I am not really sure where others take there stuff to. The ashes are good for the root crops. I have a large garden and grow and preserve a lot of my own food. I have a small orchard and press my own cider every year (they don't mind this one as I give a lot away to the neighbors). I don't rake leaves; if they get thick I may chop them a bit to avoid killing the lawn, but for the most part I let them be. Unless they are Oak, they will decompose and fertilize the lawn in the spring. I see no point in spending 2 weekends each Fall making work for myself to solve a problem nature deals with just fine. I play my native flute by the pond in the backyard on nice summer nights. I sing a lot when I am outside I always wear my tilly hat when outside I frequently wear shorts in the spring and summer, even though i have to wear a long, black compression sock on one leg. I refuse to be uncomfortable just for fashion sake. 8 2

Great Khan Artist
2 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: Tuesday, Nov 8: Do you have or do anything that makes your neighbors think you're a bit odd? I am a sweetheart and my neighbours love me. I don't have close neighbours, they're probably a mile away. But there is a farmer who comes and uses the bins and owns the land right up to the yard who takes good care of me--he mows the lawn with his massive pull behind mower and moves snow and such. I like to give him treats when he's here. They were pulling out the old fence earlier, and I offered to give them the house key while I was away so they could use the toilet.

New Yorkers are hard to get to know, but the Raptor mailbox & the general Nightmare Before Christmas decor probably has them thinking we are a bit whacko. My Texas friends just seemed to accept me & my oddities. I think, like native Americans & motorcycle gangers, Texans have a certain reverence for insanity.,

That's what I'll usually order when I'm trying to be good. The weekend was trying to get everything ready for me to be unable to do anything for a few months. So my AC was wrapped for the winter, the garage was sorted, my sports car was put away for the winter, the winter tires were brought down off the racks, and a bunch of other little things. Still in the last stages of getting my study sorted so I'll be able to try painting and the like without having to reach or bend to get anything. Largest is likely Sophie's revenge, although I have a pretty massive airship printed that I'll permanently assemble and paint one day. Largest painted is Khanjira. 3 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: Tuesday, Nov 8: Do you have or do anything that makes your neighbors think you're a bit odd? Probably.
