We got our intern positions posted for the year and for the first time in my memory we are offering a wage that is only $0.14 below what's considered a living wage for our metropolitan area. This is great as in the past the only people who could afford to apply for the position had to have some sort of external financial support to work for us. And though most of our past interns have been good workers, we've definitely had our share of kids who've obviously had everything handed to them and have no idea what a work ethic is. Hopefully this opens up the door for some young talent who otherwise couldn't afford to come work with us! Hooray for decent wages!

14¢ x 2080 = $291.20

Per hour? Yes?

Correct. It is 14 cents per hour under what is considered the living wage for our region. That's based on a single person without dependents living on their own. Given most of our interns are college kids and recent graduates a lot of them will still have roommates. So this is fairly decent for a six month gig for most of them. This is also a higher wage than most of them have ever gotten. Definitely way better than internships at most of the private firms we work with. With luck that will encourage more of them to apply for permanent positions (which gets you around a $14/hr bump in pay plus benefits to start) when their internship ends. I'm pretty happy about it. It kind of stinks getting to know these folks over the course of their internship and knowing in the back of my mind we're paying them crap wages for all the hard work I dump on them.

I bring a little bag of candy to work with me to snack on during the day. Today was a mix of Spree and Mike N Ikes.

Our telephone system is now 100% internet based. As such, there is a significant lag between the person talking and the sound coming out of the single-ear headset we are all given.

I have access to safety equipment from time to time and make sure I have earplugs. Mostly because I put one in the ear without the headset speaker to keep me from hearing the person on the other side of the cubical wall speaking  during meetings. The delay becomes an  annoying echo and keeps distracting me. The earplug stops that.

The earplugs come in orange.

The Mike N Ike candies are orange.

I have tried to eat my earplugs three times today.

And how many times have you tried to put Mike N Ikes in your ear?

Sadly, the dynamics group is causing me to have a lot of meetings where I give the same information to a new person. Rinse and repeat.

I’m surprised I get anything done.
