It should be noted that many ( this is true for almost every one I have been stationed at or visited ) military bases have a large and impressive wall surrounding the main gate, but the majority of the rest of the base is surrounded by chain link fences with signs ( Like TGP mentioned ) that warn people away.

In response to kristof65:

But is this modern day, but with giant robots OR is this science fiction-y futuristic with giant robots?

I ask because maybe have Holo projector walls that disrupt things visually.

I've seen somewhere on these forums a wall made with fancy duct tape from a dollar store to make a holographic wall.

Do you know about T walls?

This is my question also.

Most model RR setups I have seen are always looking like 1958. The year before Sputnik when all was well with the world.

You guys get fences?  We just put ours in the middle of nowhere.

Okay, I jest, there are fences on our bases, and the larger bases do indeed have NICER fences (aka taller, and more barb-wired).  But yeah, generally it's out in the middle of nowhere, with signs like "live weapons range" that tend to keep people away...  Oh yeah, and since there aren't many roads in those areas, it's really, REALLY easy to put up a guard shack at the one or two gates... 😛

I understand that this is a modeling project, but do you have any background/fluff in mind for this? Like are CAVs well known, or would they be new and Top Secret, so that civilians wouldn't know about them?

I didn't even consider the public knowledge aspect - that makes a big difference.

I think I was focused more on the possible security differences of an army base vs my personal experience with Naval and Air Force bases.

Mare Island Naval Shipyard didn't have anything blocking the view of the subs in dock from the city of Vallejo across the river, but then again, most people couldn't get within 500 ft of them.

Tall concrete would be realistic. That's what we have at the local place, where they used to build Navy fighter jet engines and components for nuclear weapons.  The wall is at least 10ft tall.

Thanks - never seen a wall like that at any of the bases I am familiar with.

Chainlink and Razor wire is my experience as well.

Mare Island didn't bother with walls because the only two access points were over bridges.

Travis AFB had a rather large hill/berm blocking view of the airfield from the main gate, but i think that was more about sound mitigation for base housing and the surrounding neighborhood where I lived.

Ooh, that's an idea to consider.

I had seen photos of t-walls before, didn't know what they were called, and had not thought about them. Thanks.

Most model railroaders are into historical modeling IME as well. A few are more modern. Me? I want to explore the future.

I actually just joined the local T-Trak club today at their show at an area library. Was discussing my ideas with a few of their members and they are eager to see what I bring. Most of them have modules that could work for any era from the 50s to the 90s without much tweaking. Several historical modules as well, like one that depicts the laying of the golden spike in 1869.

I think my ideas with the CAV models will appeal to the kids who come to their shows.

I did decide that my base will be named Fort Talon, Commanding Officer General Edward Pugh.

The base I was stationed at in Australia had fences all along the front (East) side, and half way along the north and south sides, up to the top of the small hill that ran north/south through the base. On the other side of the hill, that couldn't be seen from any roads, no fence at all.

The remote site I worked at was about 3 miles southeast of the main gate had no fences at all, and no gates or anything.  Anyone could drive right up to the building.

OUTSTANDING!

Also:

My legions have grown stronger this day.

I just got back home from running some important errands, one of which was stopping by the the FLGS for their 'gamers garage sale' . I managed to snag 2 GW Dark Elf kits NIB for $15 for the pair of them. )I don't play GW games, and won't pay their silly prices, but I will most definitely pick them up when I'm paying a dollar per figure.) I also got 2 boxes of RuneWars figures for $5 each, they were the last ones I needed to complete a unit of knights, and a few random fantasy figures which will end up in one warband or another for games like FrostGrave, and I picked up a MASSIVE amount of bits.

I'm going to go sort my new toys now. ::D:

A second on the OUTSTANDING!

The idea on the tech walls with blocking capabilities is super, and would help with the futuristic theme.

Another possibility is to have the railroad tracks in a "tunnel" that is a clear tube with view blocking panels on the base side.  It would eliminate the need for fencing and promote the idea of a futuristic setting.

Those are what was used in the Berlin Wall, right?

Berlin Wall predates the development of this technology.

When it was first erected they started by stringing barbed wire between buildings and blocking up all the building openings facing  the "wrong way".  As time went on they started filling in, first with cinder block wall then with poured concrete.

The remaining remnants of the wall are protected by fencing to discourage souvenir hunters.

Having grown up during the Cold War and seen the remnants of the wall up close was quite an emotional experience.

It’s plenty realistic. A wall like this got built around a single building (Building 500) that was solely dedicated to the now Defunct A-12 navy bomber program. That building had no windows. There was nothing to be seen but there was a wall next to the public roads.

Worked in several of those types of buildings. They had windows. In the emergency exit stairways.

In Ben Rich's book, he talks about what they did with the first stealth fighters out at the Ranch. When they knew an advesarial satellite was flying over, everything got put back into the hangers. After it passed, everything came back out. Distance and remoteness was their main survelliance deterrant. If the CAVs are that close to the public rail, they're known, and have been around for a long number of years. So I'll concur with all the previous responses of chain link being sufficient.

Now, on to the super-duper fun annual activity! Taxes!

They're reasonably fun here in Canada, no purple required.  The frustrating part is just waiting for Netfile to open so I can pull the couple of documents I know I've missed (usually T5's, aka reports of interest earned in pesronal accounts), and then fire my tax return in.

Plus side though ohhhh boy I can't wait to get that refund.  Suppose I should finish moving things around in the living room so I have somewhere to actually put the 350mm Voron 2.4 that's on hold with a local vendor...

The submarine base in Groton, Ct. where I was stationed actually has a train that runs right through part of the base. Anything that the Navy doesn't want people to see is either a great distance away from that train, inside a brick building, or both. The only thing separating the train from the base is chain link fences.

I... will neither confirm or deny that I... may or may not... know "people"... who've been on that base without the permission or knowledge of the U.S. Navy....
