So my (modified) #dungeon23 is going all right, but last couple days I decided I was  kind of light on map and heavy on description, so I supplemented with some little drawings, and, well… nice reminder that I cannot draw for squat. 😅

GEM

This would be truly impressive if it… 1) branded numbers on each piece of toast… 2) and those numbers were randomized.

I wish we had StarFleet food replicators.  Because you could program a replicator to do that!

So, a bit of a follow up to the bright headlights discussion from a week or so ago:

I read an article (sorry, it didn't occur to me to bookmark it so I could share a link) that goes into it.

First off, those lights aren't exactly brighter, they just seem to be. The regulations for brightness have not changed in a very long time.

They seem worse for 3 main reasons:

a) cars are getting bigger (taller), so they're at the height that they're going to be in your face when you're sitting down in your drivers seat. ( I had kinda guessed this one myself, although I was putting it on the large number of trucks that the owner has jacked up 4 feet off the ground because they're compensating for something)

b) the color. The older yellow lights are softer and not as harsh on your eyes, while the newer white/blue ones are much harsher, which makes them seem brighter.

c) misalignment. I forget the actual number, but it was something along the lines of 60-70% of all cars on the road have at least one headlight misadjusted. This isn't just because your mechanic (or your neighbor who thinks he's a mechanic but really isn't) doesn't know what he's doing; a lot of cars roll off the assembly line with lights not aligned properly.

Just thought it might be interesting.

You can try searching for 'being blinded by headlights' or something along those lines if you want to try to find the article for yourself.

I've been going in the opposite direction - I have the entire region around my dungeon mapped out for several hundred miles, lol. Of course, none of those maps are actually of stuff IN the dungeon...

Now I have to sit down and type up a small novel's worth of history - I've come up with an overview of the history of almost the entire continent for the last 1500 years or so. (Yeah, fer real.) I have a detailed timeline of the local history in the two-hundred-mile radius of the dungeon for the last thousand years. There are basically seven different factions involved in events in the area, some cultural, some political, some financial, some personal (and one tribe of lizardmen). I need to come up with another 40-50 npcs for various locations in the small enclave of people who live near the big swamp where the dungeon is, the village of lizardmen living in the swamp, and the larger town about ten miles away where the adventure starts. So far, the town has detailed maps for a trading company, general store, apothecary, inn, tavern, public house, alehouse/brewery, boarding house, laundry, brothel, and headquarters for a mercenary caravan guard company.

I think I'm done with most of the maps, aside from the exterior maps of the swamp showing where the entrances to the dungeon are. Once I get the history typed up and the npcs listed, I think I'll be able to start mapping out the "dungeon" - or "dungeon"s, plural, to be more accurate. The "dungeon" is the remains of a former Dwarven settlement that was carved into the side of the southernmost spur of a mountain range, which collapsed in on itself during an earthquake - the area the dwarves had settled in was actually located above a huge Underdark cavern which partially collapsed during the quake, dropping the entire western side of the small mountain into the cavern and causing the rest of it to sink into the ground - only the top few levels of settlement survive in scattered fragments, but they've been submerged under the waters of The Great Black Swamp for hundreds of years until another recent quake lowered the water level of the swamp by at least fifteen feet, exposing the tops of several of the highest structures.

Quite a bit of the initial levels of the various settlement fragments are going to be completely or partially filled with water, and there won't be a whole lot of encounters with monsters - most encounters they do have are going to be with swamp creatures. As the party explores lower levels, I think they'll probably begin encountering an occasional unintelligent monster that may have found its way up from the Underdark over the years, maybe even a troll or some troglodytes...
