Life update:

Things are rough right now. Just as the brain weasels start to subside stuff hit the fan again. My friend passed away, which I believe I've already talked about here. Some medical stuff has cropped up on my end. Vacation is now less than a month away. I am not ready.

Medical stuff spoiled.

So about a week after my friend's funeral I went in to the doctor's for a wellness visit to check that things were okay before we leave for vacation. I have diabetes. I am still...in denial isn't the phrase I want but I can't think of anything else offhand. I've currently got 2 bruised fingers from finger sticks for the glucose monitor.

So this is my life now. But I got something fun to try to help me feel better! I'm trying to be positive about this but...it's hard.

If you're into rice, see if you can get hold of red rice. Tastes pretty much the same as normal but very low GI. We found it in an Indian grocer.

Hit the one low point in an otherwise good day a few hours ago...

Having been unemployed/underemployed for the past year and a half or so, I haven't been to the the FLGS even once in that whole time.

Which is why I just now found out that Pat Flory, former owner of the Citadel Game Cellar in Groton, CT passed away almost an entire year ago. I started going to the Citadel when I was fifteen, which means that I knew Pat long than anyone else in my life other than immediate family.

Apparently, he had a brain tumor removed and was doing well in recovery but then suddenly took a turn for the worse.

My sympathies!

It's a bummer, I know several people with diabetes, as long as you follow "the rules" you can live a pretty normal life.

I don't know how severe yours is, but sometimes one can reverse the process with certain foods/lifestyle changes.

Not sure if it is something for your situation but maybe worth checking out?

....annd we're home.

We had a very good time this weekend; played a lot of board games, got to meet some very nice people, and just generally enjoyed ourselves.

We're very glad to be home, though.

That's how it starts out, pretty soon you have three canoes and a bunch of like-minded friends.

Those little recreational kayaks are best for close to shore, mainly because of the enormous open cockpit. I've dumped my fair share of boats, usually because I want to see just how far I can put them up on edge (which is an important skill for whitewater enthusiasts). I also can't stay upright on a paddleboard for long for the same reason, I'm trying to do tricks on it. The reason you want to stay close to shore is because they are awful to rescue when full of water. We put air bags in the whitewater models, because we know we're going to be dumping them. I had an air bag fail on a rental solo canoe one time after I dumped it and trying to get it to shore to empty it against the pull of a river wasn't much fun. Not to scare, but be aware.

I have lots of fun taking them down a canal or a nice lazy river late in the season. Then the most dangerous thing is sunburning my pasty white legs. If people go tubing on it or take those little "floaty boaties" you can buy at Canadian Tire, they're great for a first river run.

We mentioned to a few friends we now have kayaks and I'm surprised how many folks I know who have them and want to get out on the water some time.

Yeah, we learned pretty quick that these weren't great for open water. The reservoir we were on had a few decent sized waves (for a kayak anyways) and we realized that we were getting water in them. So we spent the majority of the day exploring little inlets and streams that fed into the reservoir that were much calmer and shallow enough to walk to shore if necessary. I do not relish the thought of having to pull a half sunk kayak to shore while swimming. Mainly we're planning on exploring some rivers and decent sized streams this summer so these should suit us just fine. If, after a year or so, we find we really like the hobby then we'll probably upgrade to something better suited for deeper water.

*Best David Attenbourgh voice* A wild reaperjon in his natural habitat. Note how deftly he cleans the brushes whilst holding a container of nourishment foraged from the convention center environment. The full, bushy beard is indicative of a happy specimen.
