Because they can't afford or don't want to pay the benefits package that comes with a full-time hire.  Usually they need the full-time workers, but it's cheaper to pay you for an extra day's work than it is to add you to the company medical plan.  Similarly, they often need more workers but aren't budgeted for more hires, and a lot of low-skilled part-timers are often eager for the extra pay so it's easy to get someone to cover the shift of someone who can't/won't work.

In countries with reasonable IR laws it may also be that they don't always have the extra work available and don't want to pay you full time wage for weeks when there's not a full time amount of work available. But if you're in USA, probably what Inarah said.

Well, back to the work topic. Today we had another couple come in with a young raccoon. Her name is Violet and she is 4 months old. When I went to let her sniff my hand, she just crawled right over my arm and climbed up on my shoulders. A very friendly and surprising little critter.

(The link should go to a video hosted on Twitter. A jet has a Class A mishap. It was in the middle of a check flight prior to being delivered to the USMC.)

I saw the orthopedic surgeon for my knee yesterday, and it was good news.  My arthritis is very minor, the bone spur is tiny and my knees look healthy for my age which is 55.  The knee is just super inflamed for unknown reasons, but he did say it could possibly be due to my colitis. He gave me a cortisone shot, a prescription for Celebrex, and had me continue physical therapy.   There is a light at the end of the tunnel of pain, and it is not a train!

So it fails when you click it, but it works when I click it?

Edit: somebody stuck it on YouTube::
