Moderator Chaoswolf Posted December 7, 2022 Moderator Share Posted December 7, 2022 At 0806 hrs on 7 December 1941 a Japanese 1700 lb bomb punched through the USS Arizona’s main deck driving into her forward powder magazine. The subsequent blast blew the battleship in two and 1177 sailors were killed instantly. They remain entombed within their ship. Of the 2335 American lives lost on that day , over half were represented on the Arizona alone. 81 years ago today. Just figured it deserved a mention. 2
Inarah
Thank you. This is the only mention of it I've seen today. The "date that will live in infamy" has apparently been forgotten by many. 4

But it has gone over like a lead balloon.
Heisler
I did a brief mention on my blog. But it appears pretty quiet this year otherwise.
strawhat
I forgot that today is the seventh (I work a business day behind, so my head was filled with the reports from the sixth). I would normally see a notification or two on FB (a couple cousins served in the Navy), but nothing this year...I don't know if that's them not posting or FB deciding I didn't need to see it. I would like to visit the memorial one year. The in-laws went a few years ago.

Glitterwolf
It was also the reason the USA joined the War against the Axis, A certain Austrian man with a small mustache who ruled Germany at that time, wasn't really pleased with this. I for one am grateful that the US came to our aid and the Allies liberated us in the end. 6

TGP
An anniversary divisible by 10 is somehow a big deal but an anniversary divisible by 9 — not so much. 8x10=80 9x9=81 This year was the 81st.

December. It is one of the great "what ifs" what might have happened if he had not done so. There was a strong desire in America (particularly in the high ranks of the military) to deal with Japan before intervening in Europe.

Since Italy, Japan and Hitler's Germany formed the Axxis Alliance it was inevitable that they would be drawn into the conflict.

I'm not sure it was inevitable, (after all, Japan didn't declare war on USSR,) but I'm utterly thankful that things went the way they did. I recommend Ian Kershaws' "Fateful Choices" to understand how these decisions were made.
