Ral Partha Guardswoman with Halberd Repaint, sculpted by Dennis Mize

Recommended Posts

Hello my Reaperleapers!

So I wanted to repaint this figure, that I had probably already painted ten years ago, because I never liked her left eye, thinking it was too big and bulbous, and I thought it was due to my actual paint job.  So I painted the eye, as it's small and hard to get gauge with a line instead of a dot, so maybe it looked to me for that reason a little bit odd as well.  So fast forward a decade and I decided to repaint her with a different color scheme with the hopes of repairing her eye, but with the second time around, I realized that the sculpt of the eye was just big and round.

So here's my new version, different color scheme and with the thought of eye reparations that didn't apparently seem to work out or matter:

and here's the original one from who knows how far back:

and here they are together:

I think I actually like the coloring on the first one better, with the white and red.  I think maybe the metal turned out better on the newer one (even though I still think the axe head is too blue)  and I tried to do some bronze/brass/who knows what color on her grieves and the thingy that goes around her throat, but who knows.  I'm still not that satisfied.

Are we just doomed to never be satisfied with some of our little projects?

Yes we're all doomed, because we're our own worst critics.

That said, I like both of them.

The different colours and bases make them different, to me the red/white one tells me she's some sort of city guard. The green one is more of an adventurer maybe a mercenary.

I had that same problem with a Ral repaint.  This beautiful...lady's eyes were difficult; one kind of lazy.  You can probably see the dot where I was supposed to paint it but after that I just slapped paint on the rest of the face and called it good.  It's fine for game night. heh  You definitely improved on yours.

Yeah, I wanted them to have slightly different vibes with the different color schemes.  Being it was around Christmas, I almost wanted to paint on two crossed candy canes on her front, but at the last moment kind of chickened out because she is so small, didn’t know if it would read correctly.

Yeah, sometimes it’s hard, depending on the sculpt itself or the casting of the sculpt.  With Dennis Mize, a lot of his eyes are very deep set and hard to get to than they in theory should be.  I definitely feel your pain!

I think it works. Some people just have wonky eyes. It happens. 😉

I really like the new version. As you said, the metal looks a lot better this time around and the green tunic has a ton of depth. Are there also subtle hints of blue in the tunic's shaded regions, or are my eyes just playing tricks on me?

If you ever have a third go-round with her, you can always sculpt on a tiny eye patch to sidestep the eye issue. 🙂

Yeah, in the new tunic, I'm pretty sure there was some soft blue washes, as well as twilight blue and dark elf skin.

It's hard to say if I'll paint a third version of this gal. It took me over 10 years to get to the second version, so who knows, maybe in a decade or so....

Sculpting an eye patch sounds like it could be a solution!
