Having been away from the painting desk for some time combined with that fact that I still haven't finished painting my hoard of board game miniatures I really don't need another project. That being said I could really use a simple breather project and luckily I recently came across the perfect one.

For awhile now I've wanted to paint some Space Marine Scouts in the typical Cadian colors. Though Space Marines aren't my thing I really like the look of their old Scouts. I can't quite put my finger on what it is but I knew sooner or later I'd paint some. Having recently found a squad at my local shop now seems like the perfect time to complete a project I've been thinking about for a couple of years.

Now in hindsight I really should have just bought a new box as the discount wasn't great, the poses were lacking, and being already assembled meant the cleanup would be a pain. Looking them over though I mistakenly thought they'd been assembled with superglue however so I figured a quick trip through my sonic cleaner would solve all of that. 20221109_125641.thumb.jpg.d770e8bb53888077d00f043f2e71bfb0.jpg20221109_125703.thumb.jpg.d4a8ba4fc47584a5eb2eae6597ea2ac5.jpg20221109_125756.thumb.jpg.622a17e6dd3176b6591c7eaa1f831717.jpg

Unfortunately I was wrong and having been built using plastic glue meant extra work. In the end I did what I could cutting arms off, repositioning heads, and trying to clean the remaining mold lines. They're still a bit rough but I thought they were passable so I forged ahead adding grit to their bases and priming them.

Which of course brings us to tonight when I "truly" started the project. Armed with my recipe card and a couple of reference models from my army I started painting.

I only managed to basecoat their fatigues and armor but already they're looking pretty good. Looks like the Cadian color scheme really agrees with them too.

Lucked into an extra painting session today, so this project is really moving. In roughly three sessions these guys are nearing completion, albeit to my usual tabletop standard.

The only thing that I really had to stop and think about on these were their pistol holsters. I debated whether they should by green like their armor or a "typical Space Marine" leather. Having always found the brown leather pouches on Space Marines a bit odd I actually painted a holster green but didn't like it, even though it made more sense. Being fairly close to their fatigue color however I guess it looks okay. Until now I hadn't realized just how much thought I'd put into space military fashion

Getting back to these tonight they're just about finished.20230114_230122.thumb.jpg.3895d2ab8b44947a633278d275da16ee.jpg20230114_230145.thumb.jpg.e39ca6716e7053eeabeb938398c86696.jpg

I knew there wasn't much left to do but I still didn't expect they'd be ready for sealing and flocking at the next session.

I sealed the figures last night, while I added flock and painted the rims tonight. So my Imperial Guard Scouts are now finished.20230116_213741.thumb.jpg.c5caa8a366e44b46b480f11f30f3e1c4.jpg20230116_213824.thumb.jpg.f71747c53ac58a8fb1032bd26b323345.jpg

As expected this was a nice little project that gave me an easy win and will hopefully jumpstart my painting again. Unfortunately by painting these five secondhand models I've realized just how much I want the chance to build and paint a new box. So buying secondhand didn't save me a dime and instead of five models I have no "real" use for at some point I'll have ten of these guys. Oh well at least I know I'll enjoy the next five that much more as I make them my own.
