Weekend Questions, Feb 11-12th:

Is there an aspect of the miniatures hobby you hate (if so why)?

Is there a way you could change this to make it more fun or interesting?

I have to agree with da wolf - mold lines are a total buzz kill.  That said, the wax sculpting tool has been a real game changer for me.  Tale Spinner brought  it up in his Arakoth thread, and it caught me at just the right time.  I bought it, and I’m hooked.  It’s only been about a month, but I’ve already gotten much better about addressing those most awful of mold lines (in hair, chain mail, mouths!) in a way that doesn’t look worse post removal!

With basing I get out the supplies, apply a coat of glue (sand/tea/coffee grounds etc) - wait -  apply paint - wait - glue grass tuffs  or extra skulls - wait - paint new features - wait

and distractions could add hours to the process.
I also hate doing laundry at home as it is the same pace.  I miss going to a laundry mat with a book, and being done in 2 hours. (just not enough to forgo the convivence)

I’m thinking you just need to dedicate a four hour block every week to basing + laundry!  Apply a coat of glue, load up the towels, apply a coat of paint, move the towels to the dryer, start the darks, glue grass tufts…

Gap filling.

I don't mind most aspects of mini prep, even if it can be tedious, but I hate having to do any gap filling because I'm so bad at it and I don't like ruining my precious minis.

I would say the waiting. Waiting for glue to dry, waiting for a layer of paint or wash to dry, putty to cure, and for my miniature orders to arrive. Some of that could be solved or reduced: I could put anything with white glue into a chamber with a desiccant to speed up water removal (untested). Use a hair dryer for paint. I could take a drive to the nearest game store to reduce waiting time, but that's a bit of a haul with no guarantee of getting what I want.

And I hate when superglue won't dry while trying to glue pieces together. When it just stays liquid for a minute and won't hold. Time for a fresh bottle.

I actually enjoy the assembly process. I destroy all mold lines, love breaking out my needle files, riffler files, sandpaper, dremel, scalpels, seamscraper and pin vise. I can spend 2 hours on a single mini just listening to whatever in the background. Unless it is soft plastic, then I hate it. Probably why I have 90% of my Bones 1 KS pledge sitting there untouched.

I'll go with those two contact point weapons that Corvus Belli used to use when designing their figures.  This is generally only an issue with traditionally designed, ever since they switched methods to digital they've changed that up a fair bit and usually models are a lot easier to put together.

But yeah, it isn't just that it's two hands to connect to the weapon, it's the fact you had to dry fit the arms to the shoulders as well, and then try to get it all lined up and play that glue four points at once game, which would work... Until you got the second hand in, and it popped a shoulder off...

Metal assembly with tiny little contact points.

Infinity and early Malifaux are the most guilty of this, and it really ruins the mood of the miniature

Corvus Belli has gotten a LOT better about surface contact point the past three years, thankfully.  It isn't just a small bare contact point anymore, they aim for noticeably larger surfaces, and keyed joints to really help with that (and the overall assembly process)

I hate clean up (washing, mold lines, priming, etc.) I just very much want to jump in and get to it.

Better tools for cleaning mold lines would be nice. I have a seam scraper...in a safe place, that I have yet to use.

Not really, Not enough time to do it, but that isn't a aspect of the hobby.

Lichdom via the rule that you cannot move on until they are all painted.  I should have a good 20 years of Lichdom.

Cleaning mould lines and filling gaps - especially on Bones figures.  I find that the Bones material is WAY more fiddly than metal.  I'm not sure if metal is more forgiving, or if it's just that I'm more used to it's characteristics.

Any Cat name is ridiculous, cats won't listen to it anyway...

Removing mold lines, and assembling fiddly bits that reject to be glued on or tend to break.

3D printing fixed the mold line thingie.

Fiddly bits should be part of the mini or file from the start.

Question: Feb 3rd:

Dodos. The Bird. Do you think SCIENCE should try reviving them from their DNA? Good idea? Mad idea?

Yes, since the islands they were decimated from are still pretty much intact eco-system wise, just sans big, flightless, good-tasting birds that mariners could eat.

What is the last (most recent) piece of terrain you built?  (Purchased and finished off by painting can count for today’s inquiry.)

How to control the spacing of items in a responsive design website so that they flow correctly no matter what size screen they are on.

My friend's cat, ER (short for Emergency Rations). He didn't want a cat but his wife and daughter brought it home; he named it. Funny thing is he's the one the cat bonded to and is the only one the cat will tolerate being picked up by.

Mold line removal/mini prep, especially Bones classic and Black.  I especially hate it on my own sculpts as I know exactly how much detail got lost in the casting.  "I sent you a perfect mini and now I get it back with all these lines and stuff all over it!  Hey, where the tail spine go!? <mumble grumble>"

Bat style wings are my specialty, especially after doing 11 dragons in the last couple of years.  I am also good at doing bird wings, but HATE them as they are really a pain in the butt to get right.  You really need to pay very close attention to the proper placement of feather groups and types on wings.  Feathers take FOREVER to do right.
