Question, Feb 24th—

Foodstuff FridayWhat is your 1st choice food (recommended fluid?) if you, or someone, is recovering from gastric illness?

+1 chicken soup in general. It's so easy to whip up a massive batch and hand it out when it's cold/flu season. I've already done a couple batches this year!

Ginger ale is also the traditional bev for gastric distress (and old ladies will always pawn off ginger drops (candy) on you, too).

Water. You're probably dehydrated from loosing fluids so quickly.  After that, any clear liquids, such as apple juice or plain tea. Ginger ale is ok, but sodas may continue to irritate. Avoid anything overly acidic like orange juice or coffee.  If you have an appetite, try clear broth (chicken bullion cubes work well) or Jello.

When you're ready to move to solid food choose something easily digestible, follow the BRAT diet.  Bananas, rice, apple sauce, toast.  You can have plain rice, or rice pudding, also plain  mashed potatoes, yogurt, crackers, plain cereal like Cheerios, or Rice Crispies, but avoid milk and fatty foods like cheese.   Start with small portions, a few bites at a time.

If that goes well, move to heavier foods, like canned chicken noodle soup, chicken and rice soup, or vegetable soup. After 6-8 hours with no continued distress you should be ok to move to regular small meals.

Meanwhile, disinfect everything you touched while being sick.

Lots of good advice already posted. One to add would be Gatorade as it will help replenish your electrolytes an so on.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I've had times when a lousy fast food cheeseburger was the perfect food to settle my queasy stomach.

I was always a big fan of them sort of basic cheeseburgers. When I felt OK.

Oh man, do I miss hamburgers. I haven't had a good burger in three years. Celiac buns don't cut it.

…maybe we just have two regular questions…

Question, Feb 25th—

Savory SaturdayWhat belongs on your cheeseburger? (and what things do not?)

#1 most important, enough cheese.  If you can take a bite and not get cheese, hat is insufficient cheese for a cheeseburger.

Then the usuals.  Bacon, ketchup, mustard, maybe relish.  If feeling fancy maybe onions, lettuce, occasionally a tomato (not overly fond of tomato slices on burgers, they tend to cause a sliding effect).

Onion rings, if it is one of those type of burgers.

Ok would include mayo, special sauces, etc.

Peanut butter if we're going that route.  Mmmm.

The not pile is mostly: pickles, with some "hot peppers", and mushrooms.

Pickles I generally dislike, at least anything with dill.

"hot peppers" aren't very and are the types of peppers I'm not fond of.

Mushrooms, not a food, ok as a packing material, so I've read......
