T-Trak Module: Fort Talon, CAV Repair Facility by Kristof65

Recommended Posts

I've got all the flocking down, and started gluing the fencing into place. Still a lot to go. Done for the next couple evenings, but I wanted to set some of the stuff in place and get an idea how it looks.

still a lot to do.

- finish putting the fencing up

- finish painting the CAVs

- making signs and decals

- putting decals on the vehicles

- putting signs on the fences and building

- finding cars and figures to place

- scratch building some lights for the building

- and a ton of ultra detailing

You might want to go with a gate similar to a parking gate with guard house at the fence.

Most military vehicle depots have one that is more of a place for a guard to sit and to handle things with keys

Thanks for the tip.  I was thinking this is more of a small repair yard in a larger depot - I'm modeling it more around the layout of the tug boat facility I used to work at.

I'd been waffling on the idea of a guard shack like we had at the tug boat facility, but I wasn't sure where to place it without things looking crowded.  But thanks to your comment, you have me thinking I'll add a tall guard tower to the matte painting I'm planning on doing for the backdrop.

The Khan looks really good size-wise by the building.

Thanks, I think so too.  The repose makes it look like it can fit through the door, even if just barely.

Next module will be using a bigger CAV, and so I'll have to scratch build the building.

You know the company that makes that N scale building also makes them in HO. I wonder if you couldn't use one of those with HO Mech/hangar doors and N scale people doors for larger mechs? A Centurion or Dictator could look really good...

Most of them have just a heavier version of what you tend to see at paid parking lots,  more metal and concrete, nut it's basically a booth that can have a couple people in it and a swing arm.

Same kind of thing is in a lot of other vehicle depots and maintenance/impound facilities as it's more of controlling people going in and out.

And, while it's aimed at Gundams models and dioramas, there's a pretty good crew set that includes ones in and out of hardsuits that should be in the same scale. Having some crews out doing things could improve it.

Ooh - any idea on a source for those?

I've been trying to find figures.

I want two as MPs in the foreground with a dog investigating a hole in the fence, and some in the building - hopefully a welder, as well as a couple standing around near the side door watching the MPs from across the road.

I spotted it on Amazon recently just looking through the list of a search on Gundam Models. The name for the one I've been eyeing for a combo with the RG Tallgeese and one of the Hangar stands is Bandai HobbyBuilders Parts HD MS Figure 01

I don't think I'm supposed to post direct links here though

No, no commercial links. I did manage to find the same set on Amazon before I saw your reply here, though. Wish I would have seen this first - would have saved me time knowing the item name.  They have been ordered.

Considering how I want to paint up the CAV cockpit windows.  Normally, for my gaming models, I just do a simple three color scheme in grey or blue that hints at the idea of reflective glass - I don't get too specific, because they're obviously getting moved around.

But in this diorama, they're going to be in static positions, and mostly viewed from the same angles.   So I'm thinking about trying to get fancy and trying to paint the cockpit glass as it might reflect the surroundings - just not quite sure if I'm skilled enough to do that.

On the other hand, when I was at the train show this past weekend, I think I'm probably ahead of 80-90% of the other module builders in terms of my modeling and painting skills - I think most of them are more about running the trains than doing all the detailing.  So anything I attempt will probably be quite passable by their standards, even if it couldn't even get an MSP Open Certificate of Merit.

Anyone know of any online tutorials for painting reflective glass at smaller scales?

Not sure about a tutorial, but something that you can do with it is to get a high gloss varnish as a layer over it.

Part of the issue is that for colors, you want a known sky setup that would give your shades to match.

One thing that could be interesting is using the darker and then wire in lights for the board and go with a more nighttime look with pole lights and a light on the building

I thought about high gloss for the canopies, but that will have a tendency to reflect the room lighting, which could really vary from location to location.  The module will have a backboard/backdrop that shows mostly blue skies, so I think it would be better to paint the canopies to assume the same blue skies.

I may still go the gloss route for the one that will be inside the building (not currently shown), because I'd like to put an intermittently flashing LED in there to represent welding, and it would be cool to see that reflect off the "glass" there.

Here's a question for anyone who's worked on a military base more recently than me (33 years) - I can't recall, but do most US bases have their own garbage pickup crew, or do they contract out  to a local civilian firm like Waste Management?

Got some N-Scale Dumpsters in today for this project, and trying to figure out how I want to paint them up.
